apparently this footage is from Cabin in the Woods, I can't believe I have been ignoring this film since it was released. anyway I have a slightly apocryphal bit of information to add.

there's some evidence that the reason horned land animals all seem to have two horns instead of one (except for the rhino) is that one horn is too dangerous. horns on cows, goats, antelope, and antlers on members of the deer family form a fork or prong that distributes force somewhat and is a better shape for butting and grappling, which is mostly what horns are for, not stabbing and killing.

there have been a few experiments with livestock to create unicorns by surgically merging the horn buds of baby cattle and goats into one. the goat unicorns became famous circus attractions for a bit, that's a whole story and their creator Zell Oberon is a really interesting eccentric.

but there were also cattle experiments, notably by a guy in the 1930s called W. Franklin Dove, who reported the "unibull" he made was able to do a lot more damage with his single horn in plowing over fences and gates and rival bulls than the typical bull is able to do. Despite this, Dove also reported the bull was exceptionally gentle and friendly and became the leader of his herd.

It's funny how we watched younger generations' attitudes towards work shift so rapidly over the last few years, when everyone started realizing with low pay and high COL and no pensions or benefits, the juice just wasn't worth the squeeze, that literally every media outlet started pushing articles on why job hopping and quiet quitting (i.e. doing your job and going home) is bad, and how the push for RTO is good, actually, and we were having none of it because billionaires were buying megayachts and private jets while we were getting evicted from our homes with skyrocketing rents.

It's a weird dichotomy where society insists you have to work to eat, but you bust your ass over a grill 40+ hours a week and you can't afford the food you cook, and meanwhile some CEOs are gutting Sears and Toys R Us and Red Lobster and getting rewarded millions for destroying perfectly functional businesses. This is what the world considers valuable work? You'll forgive me if I'm skeptical of the whole arrangement.

One of the best writing advice I have gotten in all the months I have been writing is "if you can't go anywhere from a sentence, the problem isn't in you, it's in the last sentence." and I'm mad because it works so well and barely anyone talks about it. If you're stuck at a line, go back. Backspace those last two lines and write it from another angle or take it to some other route. You're stuck because you thought up to that exact sentence and nothing after that. Well, delete that sentence, make your brain think because the dead end is gone. It has worked wonders for me for so long it's unreal

I don't remember where I heard this now, but I absorbed the advice, "if you're stuck, count ten sentences back and start again from there". It's not always ten sentences back, for me, but it does force me to look at the last handful of lines I've actually written on a sentence instead of a story level, and that is eminently helpful in unsticking myself most of the time.

I recently resolved a point where I'd been stuck for months not by changing anything in the scene I was currently writing, but by realizing I needed to add another scene before that one to establish key information I couldn't work into the current one
