St. Fin Barre's Cathedral | 📍Republic of Cork, Ireland A Gothic revival three spire cathedral dedicated to Finbarr of Cork, patron saint of Cork city. Work began in 1863 by Victorian architect William Burges, who designed most of Fin Barre's architecture, sculpture, stained glass, mosaics and interior furniture and was completed in 1879. Sphere within Sphere by Italian sculptor Arnaldo Pomodoro depicting an enormous metal sphere with a cracked surface revealing an intricate interior with another cracked sphere inside. Pomodoro originally created it for the Vatican Church in the 1960s, but later began building them for other organizations. Pomodoro says that the inner ball represents the Earth and outer ball represents Christianity. Rolls Royce - The Spirit of Ecstasy An iconic symbol of the finest vehicle on earth. Created by sculptor Charles Sykes in 1905, the Spirit of Ecstasy was first commissioned by Lord Montagu. Montagu wanted a way to delineate his Rolls-Royce from others, so he enlisted Sykes, a renowned sculptor, to create this master piece. The Whisper was Sykes’s first edition of the Spirit of Ecstasy. It resembled a lady standing on one foot, with her gown flowing behind her, and holding one finger to her lips as if she was keeping a secret. There is speculation that Charles Sykes’s muse for this statue was Eleanor Velasco Thornton, secretary and mistress of Lord Montagu. Although this is only conjecture, the evidence is strong enough that Rolls-Royce’s modern Spirit of Ecstasy has followed in The Whisper’s footsteps. Today’s model has been digitally sculpted to resemble Eleanor Thornton and is hand-cast using the lost-wax process. View of the Old City of Hyderabad from Charminar. Old City is the heart of everything Hyderabad and Muslim culture. In the 17 century a granite wall surrounded the entire old city. The wall was constructed during the 17th and 18th centuries, during the Qutb Shahi, Mughal and Asaf Jahi periods. The wall had thirteen gateways called darwazas and thirteen smaller entrances called khirkis. Much of the wall was destroyed during the Great Musi Flood of 1908, and unfortunately demolished by the Government in the 1950's and 1960's. Only two gates still stand — the Purana Pul Darwaza and the Dabeerpura Darwaza and nothing except a few portions remains of the wall. People love spinning them but most don't seem to know the origins and purpose. The first prayer wheels were made around 400 CE by a Chinese pilgrim in Ladakh. The concept of a prayer wheel came from Buddha’s teaching method- “turning the wheel of dharma”. Dharma, in Buddhism, means law and order; in other words, the laws of the universe. Usually, Om Mani Padme Hum is written around the wheel in Newari language. There’s also a practical reason: many people could not (and still cannot) read. It’s said that when a person spins the wheel, it’s the same effect as reading the mantra or text inscribed.
