Davis Gaines
Witch Hat Atelier || Qifrey Episode 2
Davis Gaines & Marie Danvers, POTO Los Angeles 1998
This is one of my favorite kisses in Phantom history. Marie Danvers and Davis Gaines had such a beautiful and unique approach to this moment. After "make your choice," Gaines curls into himself, desperately avoiding any touch or further attempts at persuasion. Danvers grabs him from this curled position and their first kiss is born of desperation.
But then Danvers steps back. And instead of throwing her arms around the Phantom and hugging him like the usual blocking demands, she faces him. She makes eye contact with him, takes in his full humanity and vulnerability. And if you pay close attention to the second gif, you see Gaines's Phantom mouth "Christine" with total shock, longing, and reverence.
The second kiss isn't desperate; it's a gift of love and compassion. Danvers smiles before pulling him in again, taking his face in her hands. Gaines lifts a trembling hand but can't bring himself to place it in her hair. And when they finally separate they don't tear themselves away dramatically. They just...behold each other and let the moment linger.
This is a kiss you can believe changed someone's life.

recommending black sails sucks so bad because it’s so hard to do earnestly without spoilers. like just trust me bro it’s the best written show i’ve ever seen. yes s1 is relatively rough but it’s still REALLY good but the other seasons are even better but you won’t understand just how good it is as a whole until you finish all four seasons. and yes it’s a really compelling story about queerness but you won’t be able to tell until s2 and i can’t explain why but if i bring too much attention to the queerness it might give it away. i just need to be able to beam all four seasons at once into people’s heads so that i’ll have someone to talk about it with. may god take all the attention she granted game of thrones and give it to black sails instead

I wish I had something eloquent to say. How is this show so utterly beautiful and gut wrenching at the same time?
Reading treasure island and I am hit with the horrible realization that the black sails writers saw how Flint was presented and thought "Let's create a man whose worst fear is exactly this. Let's create a man who rails against the idea of his story being simplified to 'monster in the dsrk; children's scary story' and is ultimately utterly powerless to prevent exactly that."
They saw a man who haunted the narrative and thought, "But what if he didn't want to?"

Oh, you like Our Flag Means Death? Maybe you could watch Black Sails next, while not a comedy, it's another show with pirates and queers! Oh, you like The Terror? Maybe you'll like Black Sails, it's another show about naval men battling against their inner demons almost as much as they struggle with outside forces. Oh, you like Interview with the Vampire? I could recommend you to watch Black Sails, it's an odyssey of recollection, dealing on how the stories we tell to ourselves can shape us or trap us into prisons of our own making. Oh, you like Andor? Boy, I have a show for you! It's called Bla—
the thing about queer tv is that every time someone says "why isn't there a queer show where XYZ happens" the reality is that 1) there is actually a queer show where XYZ happens, and 2) that show is almost always either a thai drama or black sails
