It’s HOW they used seasoning, compared to other areas of the world. 

Indian seasoning does this neat color wheel of flavor, fitting a bunch of spices that are very DIFFERENT from each other, to create a huge range of complex flavor. 

Meanwhile in Italy for instance, they tend to use flavors that are SIMILAR. For instance, Basil and Oregano, or Sweet fish with Sweet wine. It makes foods less likely to contrast weirdly in your mouth, and it’s the basis of why fancy european people pair red wines with steak and white wines with chicken. Savory with Savory, Light with Light.   

But the Indian food steps it up a notch. The research is definitely worth a read.

well yes, spices need to not just complement the food but contrast against each other. to get maximum flavour when cooking indian food:

1. use whole spices, dry roast small quantities of individual spices together and then grind them to a powder. balance is what you’re looking for, not just chucking in handfuls of seasonings willy nilly because quantity does not equal flavour when it comes to spicing indian food. 

2. whole spices go in the oil first. always. also everything gets fried on its own before it’s chucked into the sauce/curry. even the curry base is started off by frying onions/ginger/garlic/tomatoes or any combination thereof. basically…FRY THAT SHIT. i don’t know of any regional cuisine in india that uses stock for simmering. frying everything individually is how we add flavour instead.  

3. indian food needs to be cooked long and slow for the flavours to really merge. don’t skimp on the cooking time if you can because that makes a huge difference.

How much responsibility can be laid on Cressen for the way Robert, Renly and Stannis turned out? Robert was fostered by Jon Arryn, so maybe how he turned out can't be something Cressen had a major hand in but... well, I'm not quite sure how well it reflects on poor Cressen that all three turned out to have serious issues in adulthood, Robert being an irresponsible, negligent asshole, Renly being a cruel, manipulative asshole and Stannis being a brooding, blunt asshole (part of his charm though.)

Well, we just know so little about Cressen’s relationships to his boys, honestly; we get the full vivid emotional deep dive in the ACOK Prologue, but very few details. 

I will say that it would be very hard for Cressen to discipline them, given that he’s lowborn and not actually their father. So maybe that’s partially why Robert and Renly are so reckless, and after all, Stannis’ inner resolve (the “true steel,” sorry Donal) seems very self-motivated, not something he learned from anyone. 

Speaking of which, maybe I’m just too much a Stannis fanboy, but I really wouldn’t cast the Baratheon brothers as equally fucked up. Stannis at his worst still has an ambiguity to him, an (ostensible, at least) justification. But Robert’s a rapist, and Renly’s a tyrant usurper, and there’s no ambiguity nor justification for either. Again, Donal Noye got it wrong: Stannis is the true steel.

Sorry for intruding, but I've been fascinated over the childhood of the three Baratheon bros. since I read ACOK.

One of the things I consider when it comes to how this three turned out to be, I think about Steffon and Cassana. First of all, even if I understand your hatred towards Robert and what he did (which is inexcusable, per se) I believe, as Ned, that there is more of Robert Baratheon than just being a rapist. He is a product of his times, and perhaps a bit of the nature vs nurture debate overshadows him (and his brothers). Robert was a charismatic man-child, I believe the lose of both his parents at a young age deeply affected his emotional development. Later, the lose of the idea of Lyanna/Lyanna hurt him even more because, at the end he felt like he couldn't get what he wanted: no father, no mother, no "normal childhood", no betrothed (not the one he wanted)... He got to be King, but for what? He didn't wanted it. Hell, he even says he'll be happier living a mercenaries life and I think that's pretty cool for him.

Stannis was already described by his parents as a somber child who did not smile. And as much as it hurt Robert and Renly, but he kept it inside, all bottled up. He was collecting every bad thing that ever happened to him since childhood, up until the Blackwater Bay fiasco. I think he was the only brother who got the opportunity to grow up beyond his own traumas. There's a sense of appreciation between Cressen and Stannis, but again, Cressen was no Steffon and no one can ever replace the place of a parent.

Renly... Well, he was really young when his parents died, I don't think he ever got a memory of them, but still I get the sense it stung him to be know as the parentless lil' lord? Then, he only shared his time with the Storm's End household and Stannis, who doesn't strike me as the best companionship for someone so "sparkly" as Renly (or even with a child). Also, the age gap between the Baratheon bros. is big (Robert and Stannis are only two or three years apart, while between Robert/Stannis and Renly is 15 and 13 years). So Renly grew up as a one child, a kid who wanted to be the center of the universe and, well he too overshadowed the already ressentful Stannis.

So, TL;DR: the circumstances of the loss of the parents, the age gap between the oldest and definitely their own unique personalities were part of the mix, beyond if a Maester who even if he loved the three of them as if they were his, took the correct care of them. Steffon and Cassana's death changed important parts of their personalities, but the core of them was already there.
