me, knitting rows 1-7 of any project: this is nothing, everything looks wrong, Iām fucking it all up
knitting row 8 of any project: incredible, itās all coming together
Yāall. I finally learned how to foundation double crochet, which for me is A Big Fkn Dealā¢. Iāve tried over and over for literal years and something about it just never clicked. Then suddenly, I start a new pattern, read their way of explaining it and BOOM. Got it instantly.
This is your daily reminder that if you donāt get something at first, donāt give up on it. Sometimes all you need is a different teacher or a fresh outlook!
if you love downloading pdfs you are likely to never use again you have GOT to get into knitting
if you like opening tabs and downloading files. by god is ravelry the website for you
If you like wildly specific database filters, try Ravelry today!
Kinda comforting to think there are people all over the world with needle and floss in their hand right now.
I also like thinking about the people throughout history who've done the exact same craft as you with the exact same tools. I get very thoughtful while spinning in the winter and imagine my great-great-grandmother doing the same thing while a snowstorm rages outside. It's so powerful it almost feels like deja vu.
Our fibers connect us, past and present.
whatās your 2026 crafting resolution?
learn a new(-to-me) technique
learn how to make a new(-to-me) garment
learn self drafting patterns
learn an entirely new craft
complete my WIPs
some other resolution
multiple of these
i want to get better at my rarely uses crafts
i want to knit more stuffies -- especially some Gnomes from a book my mother got me
spinning for sweaters! I've done one sweater quantity before, but that was for commission - I want to spin up at least two of the five sweater-size custom-picked bundles of fiber currently in my stash š³
Knitters: What is the last step before youāre āmodifying a pattern?ā
Iām following a pattern without modifications if Iā¦
Follow every instruction exactly as written and use recommended yarn and gauge
Follow every instruction exactly and ensure the same gauge but use my own yarn
Make minor modifications (eg. body length, type of ribbing) w recommended yarn
Make minor modifications with my own yarn
Use my own yarn w a different gauge, adjust pattern for gauge only
Use my own yarn and gauge, also make minor modifications
Make major mods (structural changes, major design changes) w pattern yarn
Make major mods w pattern gauge
Make major mods w my own gauge
Refer to pattern only for a specific design element or technique
Just looked at the finished object photos for the Vibe
you fool! The line is somewhere else (explain in the tags)
Iām so curious because the variation Iāve seen is HUGE. I personally consider it āfollowing the pattern directlyā at least as long as Iām not making major design changes. Iāve literally never followed a pattern with the recommended yarn and have also never followed one without my own fit changes (often just length cause Iām short lol). Definitely working from a garment knitting perspective so Iām curious if some of the difference is people knitting other thingsā¦
My 2025 version of this animation from 2020 :^D as I was drawing the individual frames it was difficult to decipher which part of the knitting process I was recreating. Clarifying the right needle movements through the cables definitely helped. This is also about the speed at which I knit, so watching the gif play back is soothing :^P
Being bistitchual is actually pretty similar to being bisexual because people will have wild discussions about one craft/gender being better than the other while you know for a fact that all are amazing for different reasons and no one believes you or that you exist.
been teaching myself how to knit lately
Meadow realising she's accidentally been knitting with twisted stitches the entire time. Girl it's okay I did the exact same thing
A tip for English knitters when working flat: when purling, ensure you are throwing/flicking OVER the needle rather than UNDER. I don't know about you, but I thought it was "quicker" to purl this way for a WHILE only to realise it was twisting every purl row.
Hey so fun fact, throwing the yarn under the needles to purl is a legitimate method! It's called Eastern purl, and it results in a tighter, neater purl stitch that uses less yarn.
But it does mean that the stitches are mounted backwards, which means that on the next row (or round) you have to remember to work the back loop of each stitch. Incorporating standard knit stitches with Eastern purl stitches is called combination knitting.
I'd been knitting for nearly 12 years before discovering the combination method, and my flat-knit stockinette is so much neater and faster now! I no longer have to go down one or two needle sizes for my purls to match my knits!
So yes, just sharing that throwing yarn under the needle to purl is perfectly valid, and you can avoid unwanted stitch twist by working the next row of stitches through the back loop.
me: okay so to avoid Hand Damage and also to have Enough Sleeps I need to put the knitting down now
