a crude summary of one of my favorite musicals

I feel like simply calling JK Rowling a transphobe isn't strong enough anymore. Like. This is not your grandpa calling you by your deadname at a restaurant kind of transphobic. This is her wanting to eradicate all trans people (with an extra special hatred towards trans women specifically). This is her trying just that by personally funding transphobic hate groups with millions to push around laws in the UK. It is not hyperbolic to call her a dangerous, genocidal maniac.

It's not about cancelling a problematic writer. It's about literally trying to save lives by denying her as much money and power as possible.

Nolan Wells' death and probably murder has evoked a powerful grief in the Black community that many Black people say is unending for them. In the States especially (though not exclusively), it's one Black person brutalized or disappeared or murdered after another, and it never stops, and that's on top of the ongoing systemic inequalities and abuses and successes in historical revisionism.

He was an eighteen-year-old on a trip with a group of white friends, and they left him on an island alone without his phone. And now he's gone.

And in the comment sections I've seen Black people sharing their own near-death experiences from being the only Black person in a group of white people, and even a group of non-Black people. They're rightfully warning each other not to be the only Black person or the only Black friend, because they so often end up dead if they do.

Those are the conversations Black people are having in order to survive. Because people who looked like me have spent hundreds of years inventing the concept of race and dehumanizing some to justify committing atrocities for profit.

I don't think it's recognized enough by non-Black people that they carry hundreds of years of intergenerational trauma in their blood and bone on top of the exhaustion of daily slights, discrimination, and very real threats and reports of death. And I think the more we sit with it and feel the agonizing injustice of that, the better work we'll do in fighting it.

u know there's really something fascinating to me about SIX the musical re: the concept of "freeing" someone or being able to change their identity in some substantial way based on how you remember them after they're gone.

Like, the whole concept of the show is that the six wives of Henry VIII are back and they're a girl group now, right? This is never really... explained. It's the nature of the show that it's never explained. They can talk about how they died onstage, but they don't really explain how they came back or why they're a girl group now or whatever.

Until you get to the song SIX. And it's like a weird... catch-22 paradoxical thing, but it clicks into place, right? This is the explanation. This song, where they make up fantasy versions of what their lives would be like if they had happy endings, culminates in them coming together as a girl band. This is the timeline we've been in for the whole show: the one where none of them had anything to do with Henry, and instead found their freedom through music, where they became a girl group instead of queens.

They, like, speak themselves into existence, basically? In the remix part of "I Don't Need Your Love," they literally say "It's not what went down in history, but tonight I'm singing this for me." It's like a... like this concept of... they reclaimed their story so hard that they created a new reality, one where they're all safe and happy in the modern world. And it doesn't make any sense, because on some level they know it's not true. They know that they only have this version of themselves for as long as they're onstage--they even say near the end, "for five more minutes, we're SIX." The magic of bringing fantasy to reality only lasts for as long as you're telling the story, and then reality comes back.

I don't know, I don't have anything coherent about this. But it's really interesting to me. It comes across as very reminiscent of Beowulf, to me, in that kind of matryoshka doll effect of preserving a story being the only way to honor and remember someone. As long as we remember that the Six Queens were real people and not just Henry VIII's accessories, that part of them still, like, exists. Idk? But it's super interesting to me.

every time i talk to canadians who try to convince me (an american who lived stateside for two and a half decades and has now lived in canada for one) that canada should adopt the american healthcare model, i feel like i should be legally entitled to some kind of compensation

“of course that is a huge problem, i’m not trying to say canadian healthcare is perfect, but people are absolutely dying in the states, too. but they’re dying while doctors are right there*, perfectly capable of treating them. patients just can’t afford care.”

* they are also dying in rural areas where there are no doctors available to provide care

like. i just don’t know how to explain to people who have never experienced it the paralyzing fear of consenting to treatment you know you can’t afford because the alternative is either death or permanent disability.

ontario’s healthcare system needs support it isn’t getting, don’t misunderstand me, but the solution is not “bring in the private sector and get rid of OHIP.”

Starting to think that decades of media in which the Scrappy Young Protagonist single-handedly defeats the evil empire just by winning a physical fight against the dread emperor has done real damage to people's perception of oppressive systems of power

I think another reason the “everything enjoyable is an addiction” discourse gets under my skin is that I’ve heard the phrase “everyone’s addicted to something” used by people with life-threatening addictions as a way to dodge concern. I’ve had someone I lived with compare his heroin use to me having favorite foods and shows when I voiced my concern about it after Narcan-ing him for the umpteenth time. That is not insightful in the slightest. It is a fog machine. It takes a pattern that is destroying someone’s body, relationships, and ability to be honest, and puts it in the same category as “I like to cook this meal” or “I keep up with this series.”

Not every pleasure is secretly a dependency waiting to be optimized out of you. Sometimes people return to things because those things are meaningful, regulating, beautiful, funny, practical, familiar, or just plain enjoyable. Calling all of that addiction does not make us more honest. It makes us less able to talk clearly about actual harm.
