i think the near-extinction of people making fun, deep and/or unique interactive text-based browser games, projects and stories is catastrophic to the internet. i'm talking pre-itch.io era, nothing against it.
there are a lot of fun ones listed here and here but for the most part, they were made years ago and are now a dying breed. i get why. there's no money in it. factoring in the cost of web hosting and servers, it probably costs money. it's just sad that it's a dying art form.
anyway, here's some of my favorite browser-based interactive projects and games, if you're into that kind of thing. 90% of them are on the lists that i linked above.
A Better World - create an alternate history timeline
Alter Ego - abandonware birth-to-death life simulator game
Seedship - text-based game about colonizing a new planet
Sandboxels or ThisIsSand - free-falling sand physics games
Little Alchemy 2 - combine various elements to make new ones
Infinite Craft - kind of the same as Little Alchemy
ZenGM - simulate sports
Tamajoji - browser-based tamagotchi
IFDB - interactive fiction database (text adventure games)
Written Realms - more text adventure games with a user interface
The Cafe & Diner - mystery game
The New Campaign Trail - US presidential campaign game
Money Simulator - simulate financial decisions
Genesis - text-based adventure/fantasy game
Level 13 - text-based science fiction adventure game
Miniconomy - player driven economy game
Checkbox Olympics - games involving clicking checkboxes
BrantSteele.net - game show and Hunger Games simulators
Murder Games - fight to the death simulator by Orteil
Cookie Clicker - different but felt weird not including it. by Orteil.
if you're ever thinking about making a niche project that only a select number of individuals will be nerdy enough to enjoy, keep in mind i've been playing some of these games off and on for 20~ years (Alter Ego, for example). quite literally a lifetime of replayability.
since this post blew up, i've been wanting to do an addition with all of the recommendations from the comments and tags. but there's a lot of them. some people might be crazy enough to sit down and seriously put them all in one post with descriptions. those people are honestly sick in the head.
anyway, here's all of the recommendations from the reblogs. not all of them are text-based, but it's a great mixture of styles. also don't forget the links in the second paragraph of the OP which will take you to FMHY where there are a bunch more games listed.
Games
A Dark Room - text-based science fiction role-playing game.
corru.observer - science fiction adventure web game.

sandspiel, Powder Game, Powder Game 2, The Powder Toy - more sand physics games.
Orb.Farm - fishtank simulator.
Façade - experimental game with a real-time interactive narrative where you try to fix a failing marriage.
The Catacombs of Solaris - trippy art game.
Yume Nikki Online - online version of the surreal classic plus fangames.
The Barncle Goose Experiment - combine element/alchemy game based on antique theories of abiogenesis.
Fallen London - free-to-play text-based open world RPG.
Nested - very unique text-based universe expanding game. described as possibly @orteil42's favorite thing he's ever made.

Superbad - technically not a game, sprawling website full of secrets.
17776 - serialized speculative fiction multimedia narrative about football in the far-future. beautiful, creative, legendary. created by Jon Bois, a legend and one of my favorite writers of all time.
Choice of Games - text-based, choose-your-own-adventure games (interactive fiction). some free-to-play, others can be bought like an ebook.
The Deep Sea - scroll to the bottom of the ocean. encounter the humble squid and his friends (by neal)
Space Elevator - like The Deep Sea, but up instead of down. you can equip your avatar with a scarf (by neal)
Internet Artifacts - an interactive history of the early internet (by neal)
If The Moon Were Only One Pixel - scroll through an accurately scaled model of the universe.
r/incremental_games - reddit community for incremental games.
r/WebGames - reddit community for web games in general.

Reblogging the update too
Back due to popular demand!! Here’s a reupload of my gif making tutorial! 🤗After my blog @stefani-germanotta/@pixelrey was terminated by tumblr for copyright reasons, this tutorial was deleted along with it because it had a “keep reading” cut :( That really bummed me out because I spent HOURS working on this. BUT I recently managed to find an archive of the tutorial (thanks to the wayback machine archive site - a LIFESAVER), so here it is again! ♥︎ So without further ado, here’s a tutorial on how I make my gifs (including how to take screencaps) 🎉 I noticed that it’s kind of hard to find a thorough step-by-step tutorial out there so I hope this helps!
You’ll need:
Photoshop CS6 or higher. I use PS CC 2017, but as long as you have the video timeline feature you should be fine.
A video player that takes continuous screenshots.
I personally use mpv on my mac and gom player on my pc.

wikipedia no longer being anywhere near the top of search results when looking up anything feels eviscerating
#they really said “you can’t use wiki as an academic source-use our garbage AI that’s even less reliable”#and you can’t even opt out of it
no but you can FORCE it away. use ublock origin and copy paste the blacklist i made into the filters to be able to remove the bullshit AI overview that google forces. it also removes youtube's forced ads (at least until they fix it)
you can also use the ublacklist extension and use this blacklist of AI image generation websites to curate your google image results
there are ALWAYS ways around stuff. it's just a matter of looking into it and asking around

It's absolutely wild to me that girls and women are expected to wear bathing suits that look like that. That in some cases don't cover more than underwear. And when inevitably they feel uncomfortable having their whole ass and thighs out around strangers, we treat it like this is a self esteem issue that should be solved through body positivity. Maybe we should focus less on trying to force people to believe they should be comfortable exposing themselves and more on, idk.... normalizing bathing suits that allow some dignity? Male swim trunks literally go almost down to the knees. You have to go to a speciality store or order online to find a suit designed for women like that. And for that matter, even cisgender men shouldn't be expected to feel comfortable walking around shirtless in public.
If you like the standard swimsuits and enjoy wearing them, good for you. It's just absolutely wild to me that that's the default we presume everyone should be comfortable in.
There should be more options available for people who don't feel comfortable wearing like bikinis and stuff, it's not a problem if someone else doesn't want you to see their body
Highly recommend https://calypsa.com/ - mix and match and cover as much as you want. And many sizes.
For more options Lands End also has a lot of diversity and range in the level of coverage they offer.

look at this. look at these. im foaming at the mouth
It was stupid good. So good in fact that the bbc filmed a version and put it on dvd when it debuted. I bought that dvd after I saw the show and put it up on the Internet Archive. The audio is not great but the dancing is spectacular. Ever see a pas de deux around an anatomical dissection? You will.

when the salad is a fulfilling meal for someone who happens to want to eat a lot of vegetables and not a concession to feminine dietary masochism
@zetsubobilly exactly!!!!!
@kittykatninja321 i don't have any specific recipes for you (other than korean cucumber salad. so awesome. experiment with your ratios and ingredients. i've accidentally eaten two pounds of cucumber salad), but i have a vague guide to make salads feel yummy and not like a punishment.
i love veg but hate sad salads so my number one salad tip is to make sure you never have a bite that's just some fuckass leaf. my number two tip is add anything that makes it enjoyable, food is meant to be enjoyable. just toss stuff in. nonleaf things you can add to salads ->
dressing. lots of it, if you want. get a pre-bottled one or make your own, it's easy. my favorite salad dressing is balsamic vinegar + dijon mustard + olive oil + honey, to make a decent amount like. 1/2 cup olive oil + 1/3 cup balsamic vinegar + as much mustard and honey as your heart desires [ideally far less than the oil and vinegar; like a few spoonfuls]. ranch is also a classic. delicious.
protein: anything goes; great options for those who want don't want to actually cook anything are sliced cold cuts, rotisserie chicken, or (heated) frozen chicken tenders. otherwise, just put a protein of choice in there. chicken breast or thighs are classic, and chickpeas are a great nonmeat option. cheese too.
fruits: adds fun textural variation and flavor. opt for milder, sturdier fruits like apples (cut into small, easy to eat chunks) or strawberries. i personally love cherries and dried cranberries in spinach salads. frozen fruit is cheaper, so you can store and thaw it when it's salad time. i ❤️ frozen cherries.
nuts and seeds: go ham. lots of awesome nutrients. walnuts, sliced almonds, pumpkin seeds, flax seeds, all packed with nutrition and so tasty. these can be pricey, but pumpkin seeds and peanuts are generally the cheapest in this category (where i live, at least)
unless you're a big lettuce fan, you're gonna want to go with spinach or a spring green mix; easier to eat and more nutritious than lettuce. lots of awesome awesome nutrients in spinach.
a salad can really have anything you want in it, but i find using a sweeter salad dressing with sweeter ingredients (fruits, almonds, not particularly marinated chicken, sponach) and using a savory dressing (ex. ranch) with more savory ingredients (ex. croutons, chickpeas, chicken tenders, spinach) tends to work best.
and finally. my favorite option. just eat the chicken by itself and put all the fruit and vegetables you would've put in the salad in a blender. yum smoothie. best of luck
there’s this one bag salad i love love love so here’s all the ingredients to make it at home- its sweet and full of greens!
- shredded kale and shredded cabbage
- craisins
- pepitas seeds
- and poppyseed dressing
