my notifications are once again devolving into a spirited debate about the ethics of actions that could potentially make someone uncomfortable, and at risk of sounding like someone about to get a lot of irate anons I think we're frankly giving way too to much moral weight to hypothetical discomfort

the thing about discomfort is that it's an extremely nebulous category that can be triggered by virtually anything and that's far too broad a category to have any inherent moral quality to it. like. my mom was mad uncomfortable when I stopped shaving. that didn't mean I was doing violence against my mom it just meant she needed to get over herself. many such cases it must be said.

I know police officers are in general hated (and I’d have to agree on that, the current system fucking sucks, I’m pretty sure I’ve only had one good experience with an officer in my life… Which considering how many I’ve met… Ahahaha <\3)

But like… Are conservation officers also considered within that category? I’m very passionate about our local wildlife and biology and that’s pretty much the main / only nature jobs here beyond. Y’know. Farming and fishing (I live in the middle of absolute nowhere lol)… And I wouldn’t want to be betraying everything I believe in by follow such a path.

Genuine question, I’m okay with anon ‘asks’ thoughts on this if you aren’t comfy reblogging or commenting- any thoughts at all’d be appreciated /gen

I’m not American if that makes any difference, nor do I live near anything close to a urban centre- we only have a couple hundred people in the area if you count the farms and folks in the forests outside of the two villages

I should mention I speak of rangers not wardens, if other countries have that distinction as well- the science / conservation / caretaker folks, not the guys who can arrest you… But I mean we just call those guys cops here where I live lol

Yeah any ranger if dispute does erupt does need to call police on their own so here officer is so heavily tied with military and police that they are simply rangers

Wardens themselves here tend to enforce regulations like fishing hunting ect and can give you tickets

So would that mean park rangers / fishery officers would not be considered in the same vein as cops in that case? Since here too they’d need to call the police if there was any law breaking, most they do with people is show how to handle hunting rifles or controlled burns safely, or rescue someone who gets stuck in the middle of a forest or out at sea- no arresting or nothing.

I suppose you would get fined if you were found poaching a protected species or dumping pollutants into our waterways but they wouldn’t be the ones doing the arresting to my knowledge, just fining and passing along info.

i love fics that feel so... grown. fics about adults that were written by adults who have years of life experience under their belts who pour that into their writing. fics where you can tell this is a person who has lived through a marriage or a divorce or a child or children or parent death or any number of Huge Life Events because the way they write with an emphasis on the highs and lows of the human experience rather than an emphasis on tropes (not throwing shade) is just so. oh man, it's just so fucking good. if my blorbos are grown men, grown women, grown people, i love it when they feel like grown people, not just extensions of the (young) author's imagination. (still not throwing shade). you know?

The way you get more fics like this, by the way, is by encouraging younger and beginning writers. Everyone starts somewhere, and if you want the beautiful, lived-in, wealth of experience that comes with age authors, they generally need to first be the eager, silly, excited just to be here, more enthusiastic than skilled authors, and then they need to not get driven away from fandom by people being jerks to them or by the weariness of putting out effort and not getting anything back. So yes, appreciate the older authors who bring their experience to the table of the fic buffet, but don't neglect the budding authors who are just starting to grow. That's like wanting the fruit from the tree without watering the sapling.

okay more serious version of my other post about this but the fact that arachnophobia modes that censor spiders are the video game accessibility settings things that have become widespread instead of other accessibility settings perplexes me so much. like if you can remove spiders from your game but not things like flashing lights or effects that cause motion sickness i think you might need to reconsider your priorities
