Dear Sirius. . .

An excerpt (that may be subject to changes in the future) that I'm planning to add to my wip Drarry fanfic, from Regulus to Sirius.

The door creaked open under Harry's palm, revealing the prim and proper bedroom he never dared to enter before. Everything was so dark and lifeless, dark wood everywhere with gray bedsheets folded perfectly at the foot of the bed. Every object seemed to have its own place, placed methodically with purpose. Books lined up perfectly on their shelves, clothes hidden within cabinets and drawers, the inkwell and quill parallel side by side on an empty desk - no, not empty, a singular envelope sealed with wax. The window in front of the desk looked out to the empty streets in front of Grimmauld, letting in the cloudy sky. Not a single painting nor photograph decorated the walls.

Everything was the exact opposite of Sirius's room, which looked wildly lived in despite the passing years as he only took the things he deemed most important with him the night he left when he was 16. His walls were covered with paintings and posters, but discolored wallpaper revealed missing objects, perhaps photographs he took with him. There was a sort of welcoming warmth to that room. But the room Harry stood in had none of that. It was cold and made Harry feel sad, empty.

Unable to keep his curiosity at bay, Harry crossed the bedroom to the desk, pulled out the chair, and took a seat. It felt uncomfortable, stiff. Harry couldn't imagine having to sit in it for long periods. Continuing on, he grabbed the sealed envelope and turned it over.

To Sirius Black, or Next of Kin

With a careful hand, Harry peeled the silver wax seal, removed the folded letter, and began to read.

Dear Sirius,

I hope this letter finds you well. If you are reading this, it must mean I am no longer here and I hope my actions yielded the results I hoped to achieve. If this letter is not currently in your hands, I can only pray to Merlin and Morgana that you are elsewhere and we have not met on the other side should there be an After. If you, or whoever, are wondering how this letter exists and not discarded by Mother, I charmed this letter to only be noticed and opened by you, Sirius, or your next of kin, whoever should that entail. Father did always praise my concealment charms, said I took after him, but you and I both know your skills far surpass mine. Perhaps it is James Potter who has opened this, you two were always more like brothers than the two of us. Perhaps no one will read this at all and it shall sit here until the end of time, rotting away with this house. I cannot blame you for never wanting to return here, not after everything. Are you still smiling despite these horrible times?

If there is one thing I must tell you, it is I could never fully hate you. Not when you argued with our parents, not when you were sorted into Gryffindor, not when you chose your friends over me, not when Mother kicked you out. You're my brother, you'll always be my brother. I've thought of you often this past year, since I last saw your face when you graduated from Hogwarts. I think of the times when I caught glimpses of you in the corridors with the biggest smiles on your face, always with a smile, with your arms wrapped around your friends, and my heart would tear itself apart knowing you have never made such an expression within these walls, knowing I have never been able to put such an expression on your face. Perhaps I may have once, but it must be so long ago such memories elude me. Are you still smiling despite the current harsh times?

So much has happened, as you know. I took the Mark as I always said I would. Mother and Father have been so proud, as I'm sure you can imagine. I was proud. I thought I was doing good, for our family, for our blood. And yet. I don't know if I am currently able to turn my back on the teachings we were raised on, but I now understand the Dark Lord's way is unacceptable. He thinks not of us. He's a madman who thinks only of himself, of the power he wishes to possess, and will stop at nothing to become unstoppable and immune to death itself. I plan to stop him, even at the risk of myself, in hopes I can do some good in my life. Forgive me for stealing some of your Gryffindor courage. I do not expect to find myself in your good grace after all this time, but perhaps this can be the start of rebuilding burnt bridges.

I've always wished to do you proud, perhaps even more than our parents, but I seem to fear their disdain more than yours. You and I could not be more different in how we see the world but I'm satisfied you've obtained the happiness you've always desired, even if you and I cannot share it nor I be a part of it. I do not know if there is a place for me when this war is over, nor if I will be fortunate enough to see its end, but if luck should be on my side, I would like to one day make you smile.

I am actually begging some people to just let some spaces exist untouched by real-world issues and horrors.

Like I've lost count of the amount of times peaceful game or fandom servers have been ruined by people stampeding in with political rants, bitching about world issues, demanding internal activism, demanding vent channels so they can whine about their shitty parents, ect.

Like. Respectfully. Not every single space has to be inclusive of and welcoming of outside topics. The real world sucks. We don't needed to be reminded of that absolutely everywhere.

Psychologists have talked about this extensively. In order to repair the damage caused by the stressors of life, your brain needs to have down time in which it is not being stressed. It needs to be able to turn off sometimes and turn down during others. That's how your brain processes stress enough to regulate cortisol production and let you get through whatever it is without being on-edge the entire time, all of the time.

At some point we will, as a society, have to unlearn this idea that if you're ever caught not thinking about something serious, you must not give a shit about others. Your mind is not designed to constantly be stressed.

Your body also isn't, btw - prolonged stress without breaks is linked to all kinds of cardiac problems.

Not only will it not kill you to let the Pokemon Unite server or Naruto/Sasuke server just be about Pokemon Unite or NaruSasu, it would actually benefit you to do so.

If you won't let a place be peaceful for someone else's sake, at least do it for your own.

I'm currently entertaining the idea of fox animagus Draco and I'm loving the idea more and more. It fits him so well.

Some of these are based on Slytherin traits, his rich pureblood upbringing, how I think he'd be during the war and after, and his physical features. And honestly, he's just as dramatic as foxes.

"The Marauders died a long time ago"

The fire crackled in the living room. Sirius and Remus sat in armchairs opposite each other; Sirius with his head back and eyes closed, Remus reading a book. Grimmauld was quiet, as it usually was during that time of night. Slowly, Remus closed his book and gently set it aside.

At first, he did nothing, said nothing. His eyes merely took in Sirius' exhausted form, messy hair, and gaunt face. It'd been more than a year since he'd escaped Azkaban, but healing had not been easy. Azkaban changes a person, Sirius was lucky to escape still sane after all those years.

Remus tried to look under the man, searching for the young boy he once knew, all those years ago. The hyper boy, always getting into trouble, daring and playful. He could still see him, but just barely.

"Sirius," he finally said into the silence. "Sirius."

Sirius hummed a faint response but didn't open his eyes.

"Do you... do you ever think back to Hogwarts? To when we were kids?"

At this, Sirius opened his eyes but didn't move. He stared at the ceiling and Remus patiently waited for a response.

"Of course." His voice was quiet, tired. "How could I not? Those were the happiest days of my life." He finally looked at Remus. "Do you?"

A pained smile made its way onto Remus' face. "Every day."

Sirius returned a similar smile. It seemed forced and didn't quite reach his eyes. His dark circles never did seem to go away.

Remus continued to speak. "I miss us, the way we used to be. How close the four of us were."

"Remus." Sirius' voice was low, warning. His eyes lowered, not quite a glare but on the edge of one. "Don't."

"We were all so close, but the four of us and Lily, you were the closest things I had to a family."

Remus watched as Sirius pushed himself out of his seat and turned his back, hand resting on the back of the armchair. His grip was tight and shoulders tense under his clothes. He faintly reminded Remus of an angered dog backed into a corner, ready to pounce and attack at a moment's notice.

"It's best not to dwell too much on the past, Remus," came his voice from the darkness. "The Marauders died a long time ago."

"Pads-"

"Don't!" Sirius turned around immediately, eyes wide and face full of anger, yet filled with so, so much pain. "Don't call me that! I don't know about you, Moony, but Padfoot died that night along with Prongs and Wormtail died long before then. The Marauders are gone, Remus. Not even in death will it bring us all back together."

As soon as he finished, Sirius stormed out of the room and Remus couldn't think of a single word to stop him. He could only sit there in the dark and quiet, staring at the fire. From upstairs, a door slammed shut and he couldn't help the single tear that dropped from his chin.

So I have a Eighth-Year Drarry fic wip that starts with Narcissa and Draco living with Harry at Grimmauld after they're released from prison due to reasons (should I make a post on reasons? Is anybody actually interested?). Basically things happen and it leads up to Narcissa and Harry growing closer as they all try to get Grimmauld looking less grim (despite Harry's previous struggles since the house reacts better to Black blood).

And one day Harry does something (maybe eating messy, leaving his stuff where it shouldn't be, bad table manners, coming home late) and Narcissa scolds him without thinking and immediately goes to apologize but Harry thanks her instead. It was the first time he'd ever experienced a mother's scolding.

Sure, he had Molly Weasely mothering him, but does she ever scold him like one of her own kids?? I honestly don't know, I've never read the books, only watched the movies. He was probably jealous he never got scolded the way Ron did. He never experienced a mother's harsh love, a loving scold. The only scolding he knows is from his aunt and uncle and Hermione and McGonagall and her scolding him fills an empty void inside.

Basically I wanna write Narcissa slowly becoming something like a mother figure to Harry, him wanting her to teach him some Pureblood ways and traditions (his dad and Sirius were purebloods after all). He wants to become just a little closer to the world his dad came from (despite whether or not his dad followed such things).

Crossed Genres. 6 cents a word. Different theme each month (this month’s is “failure”). Submissions must combine either sci-fi or fantasy with the theme. Response time 1 month. 1k-6k, no exceptions. SFWA qualifying.

Long Hidden, anthology from CG. 6 cents a word. 2k-8k, no exceptions. Must take place before 1935. Protagonist(s) must be under 18 and marginalized in their time and place. Must be sci-fi/fantasy/horror. Deadline 30 April. Response by 1 October.

Queers Destroy Science Fiction. Sci-fi only right now, author must identify as queer (gay, lesbian, bi, ace, pan, trans, genderfluid, etc, just not cishet). 7.5k max. Deadline 15 February. Responses by 1 March. You can submit one flash fiction and one short story at the same time. (My network blocks the Lightspeed site for some reason, so I can’t get all the submission details. >_>) Probably SFWA qualifying?

Women in Practical Armor. 6 cents a word. 2k-5k. Must be about 1) a female warrior who 2) is already empowered and 3) wears sensible armour. Deadline 1 April. Response within three months.

Fiction Vortex. $10 per story, with $20 and $30 for editor’s and readers’ choice stories (hoping to improve). Speculative fiction only. Imaginative but non-florid stories. 7.5k maximum, preference for 5k and under. (I kind of want to support them on general principle.)

Fantasy and Science Fiction. 7-12 cents a word. Speculative fiction, preference for character focus, would like more science-fiction or humour. 25k maximum. Prefers Courier. Response time 15 days.

Scigentasy. 3 cents a word. .5-5k. Science-fiction and fantasy, progressive/feminist emphasis. Fantastic Stories of the Imagination. 15 cents a word. 3k maximum. Any sci-fi/fantasy, they like a literary bent. (psst, steinbecks!) They also like to see both traditional and experimental approaches. Response time two weeks. 

Beneath Ceaseless Skies. 6 cents a word. 10k maximum. Fantasy in secondary worlds only (it can be Earth, but drastically different—alternate history or whatever). Character focus, prefer styles that are lush yet clear, limited first or third person narration. Response time usually 2-4 weeks, can be 5-7 weeks. SFWA qualifying.

Clarkesworld. 10 cents a word up to 4000, 7 afterwards. 1-8k, preferred is 4k. Science-fiction and fantasy. Needs to be well-written and convenient to read on-screen. Appreciates rigour. No talking cats. Response time 2 days. SFWA qualifying.

Orson Scott Card’s Intergalactic Medicine Show. 6 cents a word. Any length. Science-fiction and fantasy (along with fantastic horror). Good world-building and characterization. Clear straightforward prose. Response time three months. Yes, OSC is editor-in-chief. SFWA qualifying.

Interzone. Sub-pro rates if anything (but highly respected). 10k max. Short cover letter. Science-fiction and fantasy.

Whenever I see a post like this, I feel like I have to tell people about the Submission Grinder.  I just did a search on it and it came up with 135 markets that pay for fantasy short stories. You can search by genre, pay rate, length of story they accept, etc, and it’s constantly being updated, which a post like this can’t be, and you can also use it to keep track of what you’ve sent where and when, and since a lot of people use it for this purpose it’s got a lot of good data about response times and so on. If you are trying to sell fiction or poetry on the regular, it is such a useful tool and I encourage everyone to use it.

Floorplanner. Design and furnish a house for you to use for having a consistent background in your comic or anything! Free, you need an account, easy to use, and you can save multiple houses.

Comparing Heights. Input the heights of characters to see what the different is between them. Great for keeping consistency. Free.

Magma. Draw online with friends in real time. Great for practice or hanging out. Free, paid plan available, account preferred.

Smithsonian Open Access. Loads of free images. Free.

SketchDaily. Lots of pose references, massive library, is set on a timer so you can practice quick figure drawing. Free.

SculptGL. A sculpting tool which I am yet to master, but you should be able to make whatever 3d object you like with it. free.

Pexels. Free stock images. And the search engine is actually pretty good at pulling up what you want.

Figurosity. Great pose references, diverse body types, lots of "how to draw" videos directly on the site, the models are 3d and you can rotate the angle, but you can't make custom poses or edit body proportions. Free, account option, paid plans available.

Line of Action. More drawing references, this one also has a focus on expressions, hands/feet, animals, landscapes. Free.

Animal Photo. You pose a 3d skull model and select an animal species, and they give you a bunch of photo references for that animal at that angle. Super handy. Free.

Height Weight Chart. You ever see an OC listed as having a certain weight but then they look Wildly different than the number suggests? Well here's a site to avoid that! It shows real people at different weights and heights to give you a better idea of what these abstract numbers all look like. Free to use.

sorry for acknowledging harry potter on main but one thing about the books that haunts me to this day is what happened to harry’s dragon miniature that he got in the triwizard tournament. the last time it’s mentioned he puts it down on his bedside and it curls up to sleep and then we never hear about it again. what happened to the dragon. nobody let jkr see this because i don’t want her to pull something out of her rancid ass but i need to know what happened to that dragon.

I like to think it woke up and scurried away before Harry woke up, so the next morning he was like ‘huh must’ve been an illusion or some shit that just faded out’ and of course there was so much shit going on that nobody asked about it, and he forgot entirely.

After that, the dragon becomes a permanent installment of Gryffindor tower, stealing loose coins and trinkets and shiny candy wrappers inside the bottom of a sofa or hole in the masonry. Nobody thinks anything of it, kids being kids and losing things all the time, but some kids waking up in the night from nightmares or homesickness or insomnia will sit by the ever-burning fireplace and see a little silhouette shifting comfortably in the flames. If there are significantly less mice around, nobody takes note of it.

I like to think the other triwizard competitors got to keep theirs, too.

Fleur took hers to the Madame to return it, but was told that it was an enchantment of no real consequence and could keep it if she liked, so long as it didn’t cause trouble or distract from her classes. It sits at present in a lavishly-furnished terrarium with a miniaturized forest, complete with a castle to guard, a village to plunder, and a constant supply of crickets. Someday her grandchildren will inherit the responsibility of seeing to it’s care, and the tank will take a prominent place of honor for generations.

Krum in a similar position found himself growing fond of his, and often (against house rules, one of the few he can be tempted to break) smuggles it around in his big furry coat. It likes to snuggle in the fluff of his inner breast pocket, and only if you are very careful will you see him sneak a little scrap of meat or jerky into it. For many years after, there is a rumor that he has a familiar on him at all times, even if it isn’t seen, and there is some speculation on what it could be. It will only be in his old age that the truth comes out: when his grandchildren let it slip that Grandpa has a dragon, and the old folks down at the bar laugh because of course he does, it all makes sense, they’d forgotten all about the little thing he’d got from that competition all those years ago. Krum sits in a comfortable chair by the fire, wrinkled hands stroking delicate scales draped over his lap, and when his time comes to pass there is no trace of the little thing to be found: only his body laying in bed, peaceful as can be, and a puff of silver dust on the blanket above his heart.

After Cedric’s funeral, life is grey. Mr. Diggory, still quaking in his heart and teetering on grief and denial and pain but knowing he must collect his son’s things, gathers up all his strength and makes the trip up the castle. The Hufflepuff dorm is exactly the same as he remembers from his youth, right down to the smell of dandelion tea and warm sunlight, messy beds and half-scribbled homework left scattered about, but it’s different, now. Smaller. Less wondrous, less hopeful.

He sets about packing Cedric’s belongings (Cedric, his son, his baby boy, his wonderful, beautiful baby boy, gone) with a strange detachment. He won’t remember a second of it, later- the mechanical folding of shirts and binning of trash (not much, he’d always been such a tidy boy)- but he seems to wake from the fog when he grabs the small box hidden under the bed and feels the faintest wiggle.

Of course, he thinks when he opens it, when he sees what’s inside, snuggled up in a nest of thick socks torn to puffs of wool. Perhaps he smiles, then. Perhaps, because he can’t quite tell through the tears. Perhaps something fluttery and dead and broken feels the tiniest bit lighter on the journey home, too- which is strange, with the extra weight cradled gently in his arms.

I... just realized something very sad regarding Draco and the Elder Wand.

So we know Voldy was very upset with Lucius and the Malfoy family and in order to make up for their shameful deeds, Draco was sent to assassinate Dumbledore but couldn't do it, and it was Snape who did it in the end. And whoever ended Dumbledore would be the Elder Wand's new owner.

Voldy didn't know Draco had already 'won' the Elder Wand over when he cast Expelliarmus. Everyone thought the wand belonged to Snape who then handed it over to Voldy. And Voldy then proceeded to kill Snape so he could have supreme control over the wand.

It was all a ploy against Lucius and the Malfoys. Had it really been Draco who did the need, sure they would have gained some glory back in Voldy's eyes and had a moment of relief and some happiness, but Voldy would have killed Draco for the wand in the end. It was all for nothing. It was just another way for Voldy to punish Lucius and also get what he wanted.
