Pascal Campion uses cinematic lighting and shadowing techniques to bring the characters and background to life. Lighting is so important in 2D animation as it adds so much depth.

I discovered the late artist Sacha Chimkevitch (1920 - 2006) today and couldn’t help but share his mesmerising artworks. A student of architecture and a self taught watercolour painter, Chimkevitch was enamoured with the nightlife of Paris jazz clubs in his early adulthood. He was enlisted in the army during WW2 and spent time as a prison of war in a labour camp. Once released, he returned to Paris and dedicated his time to printmaking, painting and promoting his work.

Sometimes inspiration comes from unlikely places. Who knew Salvador Dalí’s works from the 1940s and 50s would make ideal references for 3D digital art pieces? He was a sculpturer as well as a painter after all.

I often wonder what the famous artists of the past would be creating if they lived today. Would Dalí be a 3D games developper? I’m certain he would create amazing digital art anyway. He pushed the boundaries of art in his day and he would do the same today.

I’ve been gathering a lot of inspiration this week on 3D art. Blake Kathryn creates surreal, futurist dreamscapes in beautiful pastel colours. This artist has a very unique and recognisable style.

I purposely chose the landscapes above featuring tunnels, arches and pillars as these are structures I’ve built myself using 3D software. For my next 3D project I would like to incorporate more colour and surrealism.

I started this blog in October last year and it’s made me notice that I have a strong style preference. I’m drawn towards dreamscapes, retro-futurism, pastel colours, surrealism and baroque. I want to work on creating my own recognisable style. I’m also planning to keep this Tumblr active as I find it’s a great reference point and moodboard.

What’s your favourite feel-good animated film?

Here are two variations of a poster for Pixar & Disney’s new masterpiece, Soul.

The poster on the left is targeted more towards the adult audience. The piano staircase definitely reminds me of a classic film poster I just can’t quite put my finger on it (Rocky, perhaps?). The concept is abstract, it only tells the viewer that this film is about music and has an adult male protagonist.

The poster on the left appeals more to younger kids thanks to the cartoon characters and pastel colour palette. More information is available; the film is based in NYC but there’s also a fictional world.

The animation in this film is astounding. The fictional “soul world” has the most gorgeous colour palette and is beautifully designed. Every scene is so dreamy.

If you haven’t already, I highly suggest you watch this film. If you thought Inside Out or Up were heartwarming and tear jerking, well, just you wait!

Why are they so cool to look at?

Well, straight of the bat the repetition is just so satisfying to watch.

But they also remind us how the mechanics and geometry of human civilisation are all around us but we take it for granted most of time. Pieces like these give us a fresh perspective on our world around us.

They’re both so imaginative. It encourages me to use my own imagination, especially how I look at and consider everyday objects.

There is something rather wholesome about looking at the tomorrow of yesterday, don’t you think?

I came across these beautiful illustrated ads from the early 1960s today when researching architecture. I was reminded of my love for retrofuturistic art.

The persepctive, colour palettes and lighting in some of the pictures give off a Hopperesque ambiance.

This is a movie poster I designed for The Truman Show earlier this year. It’s one of the first things I made in Photoshop and I learned a lot while doing it. I think the poster is attention grabbing and also does a good job of informing the viewer of the film subject. Existential crisis anyone?

Below are two images which heavily inspired my poster. One is a fan design I found online and the other is an iconic scene from the film.

Who you gonna be?

The harder I try, the more I lose my sense of who I am. It's like my identity's an orbit that I've strayed far away from.

It’s as if I’m living half of a full life.

But you must remeber:

What you own, ends up owning you. It is only once you’ve lost everything that you're free to do anything.

I’m drawn to the theme of identity and these three film posters really stood out to me. I like the simple background and the merged faces. The viewer immediately knows this is going to be a character-driven film. They are all fantastic films which each portray the them of identity in a different way.

Can we take a moment to appreciate these amazing movie posters? The Wonder Woman 1984 posters have a very retro feel to them, but also look stylish and modern.

I hope cool movie posters are making a comeback. Movie posters used to be great collectibles and were designed to double as stand alone artworks but in more recent times they’ve become more informative and less creative.
