Sneezing so hard you split your lip

the romanticism of the “just getting over it” period of a really heavy cold — one that, honestly, kind of knocked someone on their ass for a couple of days.

where their sniffles are loose and marshy and constant; sneezes less frequent but snotty. still a smidge of lingering stuffiness, but nothing crazy. which all sounds like it’d be a pain in the ass, and it kind of is, but it sure was preferable to the near suffocating congestion they were dealing with before and the pounding headaches it brought.

where their voice is still a little rough around the edges, their throat needing cleared every so often, accompanied by short, perfunctory little coughs.

they feel significantly better than they had though, so get back into the normal routines of their daily life, finding themselves constantly rattling off stuff like:

“don’t worry, it sounds worse than it really is”

“it’s all good! honestly, you should have heard me, like, 3 days ago. not pretty”

“no, i’m okay, it’s just the last of it working its way out”

scenario: this really heavy cold kind of wiped out A’s sunday-wednesday, they’ve been on the mend and back at work thursday and friday, and now it’s the weekend.

A and partner B agree to take it easy on friday night, so agree to a night in watching movies. B has some work they need to finish up first though, offering to tidy up the kitchen and do the dinner dishes into the bargain for making them wait. Also, given the fact that A still looks quite run down and easily tired out from getting over being sick.

so B tells A to go get into bed, pick something to watch, get comfy and chill out. both of them know well enough that the dog will follow whoever’s going in the direction of the bedroom, so A will even get a big heated blanket/teddy bear to cuddle up with in the process. B should be in soon.

however, when B eventually joins, A is under the covers, fast asleep. red-cheeked, snoring softly, glasses still on, netflix screen on standby mode from being left idle for too long.

B sighs with distinct fondness. it’s okay — A’s still recovering and clearly still need the rest. so B just quietly turns the TV off, dims the lights a little bit more, grabs a book, and snuggles in.

Person is feeling a bit of chill from the weather. However, instead of taking care right now to make sure they don’t advance into anything worse, they decided to train even harder and getting themselves into even colder/wetter situations just to prove that they are NOT getting sick.

And wouldn’t you know it?

a person sick with something bad out in public. their nose is bright red, stuffed tight, and dripping, and the abuse coupled with the virus making them feel miserable has led to it being so sensitive to the point where it almost seems like they should be in bed just for the amount of time they have to spend tending to it. they rub and pinch and grab trying to scratch the itches when they come up, but their nostrils still twitch and flare as they grab for the packet of tissues in their pocket, sometimes making it in time, sometimes not. as the day progresses the soft membranes of their inner nose become increasingly swollen and sensitive, until they accidentally inhale some dust and spend several minutes with a wad of tissues in their hand, hitching and heaving, eyes fluttering and watering, their incredibly tender nose wrinkling and twitching as they try to fight it off, until they can’t hold it back anymore and they explode, letting out a little stuffy groan at the force of the messy sneeze pulling at their sore throat on it’s way out. 

by evening it’s gotten bad enough that they’re huddled in a chair in the doctors’ office waiting room. they tried to wear the flu mask, but their poor nose couldn’t handle the abrasion, resulting in a couple sneezes so thick and heavy that it catches the attention of a couple other patients. they hold a wad of tissues against their nostrils until they’re called. when the doctor comes, they look in their ears and throat and then attempt to use the otoscope to look up their nose; just as they get a visual of the membranes looking swollen and incredibly tender up to the sinuses, and the infected mucus slowly working it’s way down to the edge of their chapped nostrils, the flashlight brushes a couple nose hairs and the entire structure starts to twitch and convulse, the person’s mouth dropping open into a hitch with a tiny stuffy groan of warning. the doctor gets out in time for them to explode like they did in the waiting room, except now all over themselves. 

the doctor hands them the exam room tissue box as they mumble a tired apology, then sends them home with the diagnosis of a particularly nasty head cold, warning them that, by the looks of it, it’ll morph into a full blown sinus infection if they don’t take a couple days to stay in bed and rest.

A ghost possessing a mortal who, unbeknownst to them, has just come down with the cold to end all colds from the drafty, frigid air of the haunted house.

Now, no matter how much they try to wiggle free from the vessel, some unexpected sneeze or rough cough keeps them from concentrating long enough to break out.

So now, not only are they stuck, but they are battling a cold for the first time in several hundred years. And instead of bringing terror and dread, the people around them are confused and hesitantly sympathetic.

(Bonus points if they try to hide the fact they possessed the mortal so that the others in the house take care of them.)

First day back in the gym after mostly getting over a cold, and oh my god 😭 the sweat burned my philtrum and septum so bad, and obviously the edges of my nose. I forgot how much that hurts

Character A has a cold that makes their nose run and run and run. Their nose is so chapped and sore from the near constant wiping and blowing. Their partner B is determined to put some vaseline on it to relieve their suffering a bit but A protests, saying it’s a fruitless effort because they’re just going to end up wiping it all off when their nose runs again. Nevertheless, A finds themself sitting on the couch with B’s fingers dabbing vaseline onto their septum. They’re trying to be as gentle as they can, but A’s poor nose is just too sensitive. Their red nostrils flare for half a second before they’re quickly turning as far away from B as possible; a vicious, sopping wet sneeze tearing through them. B apologizes and thrusts a handful of tissues as them, while A blinks up at them with bleary eyes and a profusely dripping nose and says, “I told you so.”

different levels of chills

Level 1: the kind of chills that signal something’s not right - so low key that they’ll likely just bump the heat up a notch, grab an extra layer, or curl around a mug of something warm. usually accompanied by a mysterious tickle in their throat and a shiver up the spine. could just be a common cold, could be the start of something bad.

Level 2: lil more serious. whumpee is definitely aware that they’re chilled and shivery, hiding from drafty areas and seeking out an extra blanket to wrap up in. lots of rubbing of arms, shy requests for hugs, and jackets pulled tight around shaking shoulders. being outside is straight misery. can often be quelled with a hot drink and a warm bed.

Level 3: now we’re cooking. whumpee has likely given up on trying to hide how cold they are and has forsaken all else in favor of Getting Warm. you’ll likely find them huddled in bed in the fetal position, multiple blankets pulled up to their chin, but still freezing and chilled to the bone. would not leave bed for a thousand dollars, and just wants to stop shivering.

Level 4: Very Bad Chills. 🥶 whumpee can’t remember what heat feels like. this poor thing is suffering and desperate and has tried everything to get warm: hot shower, piles of blankets, warm soup, a n y t h i n g. violent shakes and shivers, teeth chattering so hard they’re scared they’ll break. will beg through their tears for another blanket, for someone to hold them close and warm them up. maybe their fever will break soon, but maybe it won’t, and they’ll freeze for hours. only an absolute monster would reject them at this level of misery.
