Hadn´t posted this cuz i had so much going on but i did an art exchange as part of @steddiebbang ´s #sbbartexchange26 , this are my colors on @al-at-once ´s Lineart :) i´ve never done asteddie collab or event so im pretty excited, it was sm fun!!

billy hargrove is not clingy.

well…not in public. not around the kids. not around joyce or hopper. not around anyone who might dare to comment on it.

in public he’s all sharp edges and crossed arms and “don’t touch me unless you want to lose a hand.”

but in private?

well it took a bit of time, but in private he’s a koala.

the second the door closes behind them, something in him just… drops. the tension in his shoulders, the guarded look in his eyes, the whole “i’m tough and nothing bothers me” act disappears completely.

steve barely has time to take off his shoes before billy is on him.

arms around his waist. face tucked into his neck. whole body pressed against him like he’s trying to fuse them together.

steve pretends to be surprised every time.

“wow, someone missed me.”

billy grumbles into his shirt. “shut up.”

but he doesn’t let go.

ever.

steve moves around the house with billy attached to him like a very warm, very stubborn backpack. billy would follow him into the kitchen, into the living room, into the hallway with arms still around him, chin hooked over his shoulder, refusing to give him even an inch of space.

and steve loves it.

he loves the weight of billy leaning on him. he loves the way billy’s fingers curl into the fabric of his shirt. he loves the quiet little sigh billy makes when steve runs a hand through his hair. he loves that billy trusts him enough to be soft.

sometimes billy will flop onto the couch first, tugging steve down with him until steve is basically lying on top of him and he’d wrap his arms around him, tight, like he’s afraid steve might disappear if he loosens his grip.

steve loves resting his head on billy’s chest, listening to his heartbeat as billy strokes his back in slow, absentminded circles.

“you’re so clingy,” steve murmurs.

“no i’m not.”

“you literally haven’t let go of me for an hour.”

billy shrugs, tightening his hold. “i’m comfortable.”

steve smiles into his shirt. “you’re so cute.”

billy groans. “don’t start.”

steve just kisses over his shirt where his heart is.

and at night… that’s when billy gets the clingiest.

they get into bed and billy immediately pulls steve into his chest, arms wrapped around him like a shield. sometimes he hooks a leg over steve’s too, just to make sure he’s not going anywhere.

steve teases him for it and billy just mumbles a half-asleep, “whatever” but steve loves these sorta cuddles.

because billy clinging to him isn’t neediness, it’s trust. it’s safety. it’s the quiet, unspoken truth that billy feels most at peace when he’s wrapped around steve.

and steve?

steve holds him just as tightly.

because he loves being needed. he loves being the one billy reaches for. he loves every second of being billy’s safe place.

and if billy wants to cling to him all night?

steve will happily let him.

Thinking about Billy crying and how, really, that's his first gut response to being hurt or afraid. Canonically, Billy is a crier. As a child, he cries when he's on the phone with his mom after she left him. He cries when Neil is yelling at him and calling him derogatory language because he's afraid of getting hurt. He holds back tears when Neil abuses him for not knowing Max's whereabouts and then finally lets the tears fall once Neil leaves the room. His eyes are a bit glassy with tears after Max injects him with some unknown drug (read more here). Sometimes, when he yells at people, there's this crying crack in his voice. He cries in front of Max during the sauna test. He's crying on numerous occasions when the Mind Flayer makes him do things that he doesn't want to do. He's crying alone in his room before Jane comes to look into his memories. He cries when he's about to die, and Max is leaning over his body. And however you want to interpret that S4 scene in "Dear Billy," even Billy's memory cries over the things Vecna is making him say to Max. All of this is Billy crying around pain (whether physical pain or emotional/mental pain) and fear.

Now, Billy is somewhat able to mask this by leaning into anger, which I think is absolutely a fear and preservation response to the fact that Neil abuses Billy and regularly degrades him with homophobic language that all center on pointing out that Billy's femininity is weak (and therefore, by extension, crying is weak-- you can read more about Billy, crying, and gender non-conformity here). I do believe that if Billy didn't cover up the fact that he wants to cry with anger, we would be seeing him cry a lot more. Which also goes to say that in the canon-divergent world in which I write Billy surviving the Mind Flayer and getting out of Neil's grip to be in a space where he can heal, he's going to cry more often as part of his healing process from years of trauma and grappling with the persona versus the self.

But a point I want to make here is that Billy still cries in the series, even if Neil tries to beat the sensitivity and emotion out of him. He still cries. And when Billy cries, it's the crack in the persona he emulates to survive abuse. And this makes me think back to Dacre's point that in S3, he acted with intention that Billy was there in the eyes while the Mind Flayer was there in the body. Which I think we can extend that further into Billy's characterization as a whole, not just the Mind Flayer plot. That Billy crying is a reveal of the self behind that loud persona that exists as a protective shield.

I haven’t drawn these boys in so long. This really sparked a burst of inspiration.

The guys are just hanging out in one of their rooms, maybe it’s a basement, and something sparks a game of spin the bottle. It keeps landing on Steve but he’s not complaining. The only evidence of this night are these photos.

Who’s behind the camera? No one will ever know. 😉

Also, a little extra explanation for what the Gobbler, also known as Schmeatgol, is, he’s basically a werewolf since me and @harringrovetrashrat basically have him shifting with the full moon. Just seems more manageable if to have a schedule for a curse. And while Billy is shifted he can still channel himself, he’s fairly conscious, just the Gobbler tends to take control when his instincts get turned on. However, it seems Steve is able to cox him out of his trance and calm him down.
