ELECTRIC TELEGRAPH OFFICE / SWAN HOUSE:  c.1870 - 2014 (Crn. William Street / Flinders Lane - Melbourne) Samuel McGowan brought the telegraphy technology to Australia in 1853. He constructed the Melbourne to Williamstown telegraph line with the first message being received in March 1854. Later in the year the wire was extended to Geelong and Queenscliff. The first telegraph office in Victoria was located on the north east corner of William Street and Little Bourke Street. Going by other photographs of the area at the time the ‘Greek styled’  building pictured here was built before 1858. It housed the Electric Telegraph Office probably until the late 1870’s when the newly formed Melbourne Harbour Trust moved in. The Harbour Trust would later construct a purpose built building in 1929 on the adjacent corner with Market Street Prior to Melbourne’s streets being planned in 1837, this location was also the site of Melbourne’s founder, John Pascoe Fawkner, first residence/hotel. This six room building, the Royal Hotel or Fawkner’s Hotel as it was known only lasted eighteen months when authorities from Sydney acquired the land for Melbourne’s first Customs House. A building that would later be described as a ‘shabby, leaky, comfortless, weatherboard cabin’. It was replaced in 1841 with a two-storey bluestone structure that lasted until the mid 1850’s.. Swan House was built in 1921 as the headquarters of the newly constituted State Electricity Commission of Victoria with Sir John Monash as its chairman. Two decades later, in 1948-1949, two more floors were added. It has also been known in its history as Lyle House. This historic high-rise building was recently sold for 21.6million dollars to an overseas investor.
