I am making head way, just polishing a few things. And if I continue working at this pace, I might have the demo out tomorrow (Sunday) or Monday.

Lane would be lucky to have you follow him wherever he goes whether he likes it or not. His route might be a slow burn, but you will still have your romantic moments if you choose to pursue ONLY him throughout the rest of the game.

As for your character’s personality…😋 you will have stats on being Honest, Sarcastic, Strategic, Friendly, Outspoken, Creative, and Intellectual. You can also choose your hobbies, and choose if you have both parents, one parent, or no parents (whether it be mom, dad, or both).

Lane

Lane stood aside, hidden from view as he saw you in front of person who was sneering at you angrily. Once they opened their mouth, a handful of insults exploded out of them, making your eyes widen at the disrespect and the anger. Lane tensed, clenching his jaw to prevent laying into the person.

At the last insult towards you, Lane moved away from the column that hid him, coming up behind the cynic. His eyes were cloudy with anger as he thought about tearing the person to shreds whenever they spat at you. He laid a tightening grip on their shoulder, making the person freeze and stop their rant. He waited for the person to turn around before he made his threat.

“You are to never insult MC again. And you are never allowed within a foot of them. You are never allowed to look at them or I will run my sword through you in front of them to show them that there will never be another heckler like you. Do you understand?”

The person nodded in fear and scampered away, but Land didn’t watch because his eyes were set on you longingly.

Simon

Simon clenched his fists, as he stood by watching MC get reprimanded by a recluse with no shame. They haven’t seen him yet, but now they will. Simon moved forward, turning his face from twisted anger to happy days.

He came up behind you, a smile on his face. You looked up at him, a dejected look on your face. He glanced at your expression, and his mask cracked a little before he repaired it and looked at the person harassing you.

“And who are you?” He asked.

The person stammered, unsure of what to say.

Simon turned his smile, which was now slanting, and he moved forward, putting you behind him. He gave the person a cruel smile before speaking again. “How are you blubbering now after I came upon you? You had no problem a mere seconds ago with your speech. Tell me, how will it feel when I personally escort you to the prison cells for harassing MC? For harassing my love?”

The person ran away before Simon could make good on his theory.

Henery

Henery stood composed in a dark corner of the room that echoed every hurtful thing someone could say to you. He’s spent time hiding from prey in order to capture them, and he’s unaware he’s doing the same thing now.

He snuck along the walls, moving silently before he landed at the agitator’s side. The person stiffened, their eyes looking over at Henery, who was pressed to their side. You cover a smile, knowing this will be the last time you see this person.

Bending down to the person’s height, Henery stared into the person’s eyes, expressionless.

“You are like a deer. A deer that has the weight to feed the entire Kingdom for two weeks,” he spoke.

Gazing over at you, his expression softened before it hardened again when he turned back to the person. “Unfortunately, your blood, meat, and bones are tainted from the inside out, which would poison the Kingdom. So eating you, deer, is off the table, but I’m sure I could find good use of your bodily scraps.”

The person trembled, their feet already walking them away from the situation.

B

After seconds of hearing the insults, B could not take it anymore. They strode to the heckler, so hesitation within their steps. You looked at them shocked, but glad that they were there. They moved you behind them, an unpleasant smile on their face.

They placed their hand on the hilt of their sword that hung on their waist, and looked at the person in challenge. The person didn’t speak, scared to say anything else. B harshly grabbed their cheeks with one hand, turning it to the side.

“You would make a fine soldier for the Kingdom. Possibly dying to protect others, to even protect MC. The recruitment area is on the far side of the Kingdom. Do you want me to escort you there?”

The person shook their heads, their eyes fearful.

B chuckled, slapping the person on their chest. “Then don’t make threats or rants to MC or I swear I’ll have you on the battlefield if you ever come in to MC’s presence again.”

The person nodded before scurrying away.

Samara

Samara held her head up high as she walked towards you and you opponent. After hearing their cruel words, she would not let the person up easy. She would only to degrade them more as they did you.

The person set their lips into a thin line as Samara approached you. You give her an uncertain look, but she responds by sending you a slight smile, which is rare for her. She looked at the agitator, dropping her smile instantly.

“I’m not sure we’ve had the…pleasantries to meet,” she said, as she put out a hand. The person grabbed her hand immediately, only to pulled towards her, her face inches away from his. Samara narrowed her eyes.

“I was unaware that such a reptile lived in the Kingdom, passing by as a human. When I find reptiles, such as lizards in my room, do you know what I do them?”

She didn’t wait for an answer.

“I step on them. Their blood may mess up my shoes, but there’s one less reptile that I’ll see.”

The person gulped, taking their hand away from hers and running off.

M

M finally found you.

As your protector, they’re meant to stay by your side at all times, but you had run off and found yourself a heckler. M rolled his eyes, but couldn’t stop the smirk on their lips at the trouble you get into. The insults were small, something M would say to you as jest.

But as the seconds grew, so did the remarks, and their smile dropped faster than they could turn around. They stormed to you, grabbing you by the waist and yanking you behind them. The heckler’s words were just cut off and he stared at M wide eyed.

You place a hand on M’s arm and they grabbed it gently, before letting go. A wicked smile replaced M’s grim line of lips, and the person shook.

“Say those words to me, heckler.”

The person didn’t respond.

“So you won’t?”

No answer.

“Whenever you say anything to my MC, know that we’re connected. An insult to them is an insult to me. And you’re already on my bad side, so I wouldn’t want to venture further.”

The person nodded, eager to leave.

“Never come near her again.” After a moment, M waved a hand to release them.

Apparently a lot of people get dialogue punctuation wrong despite having an otherwise solid grasp of grammar, possibly because they’re used to writing essays rather than prose. I don’t wanna be the asshole who complains about writing errors and then doesn’t offer to help, so here are the basics summarized as simply as I could manage on my phone (“dialogue tag” just refers to phrases like “he said,” “she whispered,” “they asked”):

“For most dialogue, use a comma after the sentence and don’t capitalize the next word after the quotation mark,” she said.

“But what if you’re using a question mark rather than a period?” they asked.

“When using a dialogue tag, you never capitalize the word after the quotation mark unless it’s a proper noun!” she snapped.

“When breaking up a single sentence with a dialogue tag,” she said, “use commas.”

“This is a single sentence,” she said. “Now, this is a second stand-alone sentence, so there’s no comma after ‘she said.’”

“There’s no dialogue tag after this sentence, so end it with a period rather than a comma.” She frowned, suddenly concerned that the entire post was as unasked for as it was sanctimonious.

Cayrie’s Guide to the House of Lamentation - ✨

Heya, fellow MC’s! 

I’ve spent almost my entire weekend working on a simple floor plan for the House of Lamentation. I was trying to write some dumb fanficiton, realized that I had absolutely nothing concrete to anchor these characters to, and that was a problem for me.

Internet searches left me empty-handed. I found a lot of impressive Sim houses, but they didn’t really give me what I was looking for. So, I came to conclusion that I was going to have to make my own. 

There are a lot of small, often contradictory details about the HOL that made this a pretty daunting task at first. Then I just said fuck it and rolled with the punches. I took my liberties to make something that worked for me - and hopefully, it can work for you, too!

I like to imagine that my MC self actually did take time to create a map like this for her own benefit - and to the benefit of anyone else who might need it. (Potential spoilers ahead + map is not to scale)

Confirmed! I interviewed for a job right after arriving in NY. The interview went incredibly well, and I went home and immediately wrote a thank you letter and put it in the mail. I had a super good feeling about this interview.

I didn’t get the job.

However, a few weeks later, I was called in to interview with another editor in the same company, and I did get that job. I found out later from the initial editor (the one who didn’t hire me) that he had planned to offer me the job, but since I didn’t follow up with a thank you letter, he assumed I didn’t really want it. He offered the job to another contender–but when he got my letter in the mail shortly after the offer had already been made, he went to HR and gave me a glowing recommendation. It was based on that recommendation that I got called in for the second interview.

So: send an email thank you immediately (same day!) after the interview. If you’re feeling extra, go ahead and send a written one too. OR go immediately to a coffee shop, write the letter, and return to the office and give it to the secretary.

Either way, those letters are important.

Pro tip: If you really want HR to develop a personal interest in your application, publicly thank them on linkedin. Just make a short post telling your network about how X recruiter really went above and beyond to make you feel welcome, or about how be accommodating and professional they were, or whatever. Make sure to use the mention feature so they’ll get a notification and see it. 

Flattery will get you everywhere… and public flattery that might make its way back to their manager, doubly so.

As a former professional recruiter and recruiting manager, I confirm, especially for entry-level positions, where you are competing with oodles of people. This little thing can make a difference. Also the fact that, maybe, you took time to google the “interview etiquette”.

The post-interview thank you notes can be a good way to recover in case you got asked a question whose answer you either didn’t know or felt was super weak. So if you follow the above given template, jump in with something like “upon further thought to your question, here’s my revised answer.” 

But yeah always send a thank you note after an interview. It’s a small thing but it makes a hell of a difference. And def send thank you messages to any recruiters who may have helped. And also after you get the job. Small things like that really go a long long way.

More often than not I’ll crack into a sprawling fantasy series and, while I appreciate the luscious descriptions of furniture, landscapes, and clothing, all I’m focused on is that I don’t actually know how this world works. I only know what it looks like.  

Including some functionality to your universe can add to immersion and give your reader a strong foundation on which to build their mental model of your universe. 

You certainly don’t need to use all of these questions! In fact, I recommend against that, as all of these certainly won’t make it into your final draft. I personally find that starting my worldbuilding off with 5 to 10 functional questions helps pave the way for glittery and elaborate aesthetic development later on.

How is the healthcare funded in your world?

How does healthcare functionally differ between the wealthy and the poor? (i.e. can only the wealthy go to hospitals? do poor families often have to rely on back-alley procedures?)

Where are health centers (i.e. hospitals, small clinics, etc.) organized in your cities?

Does it differ in smaller towns?

How does this affect people’s ability to get healthcare?

Is healthcare magical, and if it is, how does that affect the healthcare system? 

If healing is instantaneous, how does that affect people’s views on injury, illness, and chronic ailments?

If you have both magical and physical healthcare, which one is deemed superior and how does that affect society? 

What illnesses are common in your world? 

How does this affect daily life? 

What do the people in your world think illnesses are? 

Is it a miasma theory? 

Humor theory?

Is there a coming-of-age aspect to travel?

Describe your world’s postal system or whatever equivalent there is. 

Who pays for it? 

How reliable is it? 

Are there emergency methods for transporting information?

How does your world keep time (i.e. watches, sundials, water clock, etc.)?

Does your world have a currency system, barter system, or something else? 

If you have multiple countries, do different currencies have different values across said countries?

How does this affect travel?

Do you have banks in your world and if so, how are they run?

Who owns the banks? Government? Wealthy? How does this affect the economy and/or class system?

How does credit operate in your universe?

Does your world operate more on big corporations or small business? Something in between?

How are workers/labourers treated in your world? 

Are there workers unions and if so, what are common views on unions? 

Describe your tax system. If you don’t have a tax system, explain why and how your world is affected by that. 

Can certain social classes not own property, certain livestock, certain businesses, etc.? Why?

How are business records kept? Are business records kept?

If your world has technology, does your world prioritize developing entertainment tech, communications tech, transportation tech or something else entirely?

What does this say about your world?

How does this affect your economy?

To the closest approximation, what type of government does your world have?

Can certain classes or races not become citizens?

Are there certain taboo subjects or opinions that artist/authors/musicians are not allowed to depict (i.e. portraying the official religion in a negative light, explicit sexual material, etc.)? What does this say about your society?

How do people get around these censorship laws?

What is the official hierarchy of duty in your world? (i.e. is family the most important, or patriotism? What about clan?)

How many languages are there in your world, and how many languages share a common origin? 

How many people are multilingual? 

Which language is the most common?

How is multilingualism viewed?

How are different languages viewed? (i.e. is one language ugly/barbaric while another is romantic and sensual?)
