Hey. Aspiring artist here. I've been working on a drawing for the past 4 days, 3 of which I've spent shading. And the shading itself is kinda basic (I opted out of making a set light source and experimenting with shadows to make the object appear 3D). After 3 days and countless hours, I'm still only half way done. Do you have any advice on shading? I feel going in line by line and subtly changing the color brightness to create a shadow isn't what I am supposed to be doing. Thank you!

Hello there! First of all (sorry for the probably too late reply) , huge props to you for being so patient and hardworking with your artwork! It would help me a lot to see your artwork and progress to help you better and give proper feedback, as there are many, many methods how to shade. So feel free to send it over if you like.

I personally am an advocat of painting everything in black and white first. That way you can focus solely on values only first and don’t have to constantly switch colors or look for the right tones, and then you can create one or multiple overlay layers to add colors and depth and work on color transitions.

This method helps me save a lot of time and at the end place colors more consciously of the entire situation and mood.

But here are a few general tips I find to be useful. Work from rough to fine, meaning set the deepest shadows and parts where the light hits directy, then the midtones and then work on more detailed blending and transitions etc. Don’t try to maticulately perfect every shadow from the beginning.

I think it helps to work both with harsh edges and airbrush to shade. A smoothly set airbrushed shadow can help with the 3d effect but too much airbrush can look unstructured and muddy/ blurry so always try to get a balance beween structure/ harsh edges and soft edges. But there are artists or styles that don’t use airbrush at all but only harsh shadows and textured or more painterly brushes to achieve a feel of realism or 3d. For example I used a bit of airbrush on the left but not on the right. (pls ignore all the flaws ^^", I'm just trying to get the point across)

I personally think good transitions from deep shadows to midtones to highlight of a form make for a nice 3d effect more on the realistic side. You have a shadow color which then transitions into a rim of another color and then into the highlight, like on her nose or chin. Looking at references that fit your style helps a lot too!

Another tip would be to shade along the form. Meaning, follow the lines of the form when adding shadows and highlights and don't work against them. Look at each area and folow its natural form . I personally like exaggerating shadows and light because it can add more depth and focus to the image.

Pose Tag - static and dynamic poses

Multiple People - subsection of the pose tag with more than one person interacting with each other

Face Tag - faces in different angles and of differing ethnicities

Fashion - casual, high fashion, religious, cultural, etc

Casual - casual everyday wear specifically

Inspiration - things that get me into a drawing mood or that have interesting compositions

Aesthetic - aesthetically pleasing photos and color schemes

ref - a very messy general reference and tutorial tag

take ur loop. go to edit > define brush preset (or whatever u use to make brushes idk man i use photoshop)

bam. now u got a brush.
