Hamilton’s Leslie Odom Jr. talks diversity on Broadway - Watch the full video
MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM I LOVE HIM
There’s a lot of people who exist in the world.
A lot of stories to tell.
While I do agree with the message being said, I disagree with some points. Please hear me out.
NOBODY is asking China, Japan, India, and Nigeria and any other non white country to be diverse. It’s understandable that these countries are homogenous and not as diverse as western countries such as the USA, Canada, Australia, etc. The US alone has plenty of people from different backgrounds. I work in the medical field and let me tell you, I’ve seen people from India, Pakistan, Nepal, Tibet, Nigeria, West Africa, Kenya, the Philippines. I can go on but I’ll stop right there.
Not gonna lie, I WANT to see more Filipino representation in the media IF it’s any good. However, I’m not gonna DEMAND representation, I can do it myself. There’s a quote that if something doesn’t exist, then you’re gonna be the one to create it.
I don’t see anyone complaining about the lack of black and white characters in Bollywood. No one complains about the lack of LGBT characters in Bollywood. If there are LGBT Bollywood films, let me know because I can’t provide an example.
No one says anything about Chinese martial arts film like Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon with the majority of the cast being Chinese. There’s NO white people in that movie because it’s set in ancient China. No one cares if there’s no white people in a movie set in feudal Japan, although I have heard people complain about anime characters with Caucasian features. Some complain that there’s not enough black people in anime/manga.
I know there’s still a long way to go for marginalized groups but at least be thankful that there are already films that feature nonwhite characters along with LGBT characters. There are animated films with nonwhite characters like Moana, Book of Life, Coco, Aladdin, Lilo and Stitch, etc.
DON’T FORCE diversity for the sake of diversity. Do you see where I’m going?
Nobody’s forcing diversity…on the contrary, its fighting against a forced homogeneity. As for why we aren’t pushing for diversity from other countries. Well there’s a couple reasons. 1) as you already pointed out, most other countries are far less diverse. China is 91.6% Han Chinese, and 6.6% other minority Chinese ethnic groups, leaving less than 2% of the Chinese population for non-Chinese (most of that being Korean and other Asian immigrants). 98.5% of Japanese people are ethnically Japanese. America is about 66% white. There are roughly 116 million non-white people in US. The Japanese population is 127 mil. There are about as many non-white people in the US as there are people in Japan period. So make no mistake, the absence of them in media, is a god damn problem. 2) I don’t know those countries. Obviously Im not gonna be able to critique they society as well as my own, the fuck? Now, if I see actively racist portrayals of black people (as I have seen in Chinese films or anime) then yes, that too is a problem. But no Im not gonna critique these countries I don’t know about and whose ethno-racial problems I am not completely in tune with. That’s not my society, that’s not my country. And 3), and honestly most importantly to me, and this is paraphrased (very roughly) from Ta-Nehisi Coates: America likes to applaud itself on its exceptionalism. Well if this goddamn country is going to call itself exceptional then I am going to hold it to those goddamn standards.
But like….
Homeless people are human beings with immense value. They are members of our families, communities, neighborhoods, cities, and, for a number of people reading this, they are themselves (or have been).
The fact that homeless people do not have housing is a wrong done against them, not a sign they did something wrong. To then try and ban them from public spaces and existing in public (including doing things we all have to do, like sleep or eat), is yet another grievous wrong.
An attack on homeless people is not “protecting the community”, it is an attack on the community. Homeless people aren’t my enemy, those who would ban them from things like sleeping in public are my enemy.

If you, as a parent, have ever told your kids that they’re stupid, that they’re fat, that they need to lose weight, that they look pregnant in a certain outfit, that their make up looks horrible, that their haircut is crappy, that they’re not smart enough for certain things, and you purposefully drag your children down, even if you think you’re “just joking” then you are what’s wrong with society and you are the cause of your child’s insecurities.
