in general i would say that “it’s not fun if they’re totally unrecognisable” is my fandom thesis. like the point of fanfic etc is putting your favourite little guys in situations. where’s the appeal if they’ve been through so many fanon spin cycles that they’re barely even your guys anymore

loads of people are reblogging this like “this is why i don’t like AUs” and honestly this is not an anti AU post by any stretch of the imagination. if you think “alternate universe fic” = “completely unrecognisable characters” then love and light but you need to read some better AUs!! putting your little guys in a completely different setting or time period or making them baristas or racing drivers or pop stars or whatever doesn’t inherently render them unrecognisable and in fact the APPEAL of a well done AU fic is seeing how your favourite guys deal with a completely different set of circumstances. support your local wacky AU today x

alibris.com is an alternative to thriftbooks that compares books’ prices across multiple websites (ebay, thriftbooks, others) and in all my years of using it it has almost always had the cheapest prices on books. there was just one instance where ebay itself had a better deal. you have to compare the prices with the shipping in mind but it’s a really reliable site!!

If you, as an author, don't want to see negative reviews in bookmarks, don't read bookmarks.

Bookmarks are not a space to talk to authors. They are a space for readers to talk to themselves and to other readers. That's why authors don't get notifications for bookmarks, the way they do get them for comments.

Yes, fanfic authors are writing stories for free, and I love that for all of us. This doesn't mean that I, as a reader, give up my right to have an opinion about the work you created, nor is it barbaric impropriety for me to share that opinion in the space the archive specifically created as reader space for the holding of reader opinions. (Literally including negative opinions. I was there for the discussions at the time. IIRC, the exemplar was, if something you read was really fucking racist, you could tag it as such to warn other readers.)

A reader choosing to privately bookmark, for whatever reason, is well within their rights to talk only to themselves about what they read. But the reader who chooses to talk negatively and publicly about a fic via bookmarks is also using the archive as intended.

You know, I hadn’t thought about it this way, but it does make a lot of sense.

A lot of people commented saying they didn’t know why people bookmarked fics they don’t like, but I understand why people do that. It’s so they don’t read it again in the future, having forgotten they already read it and didn’t like it. I’ve gotten bookmarks before they said “didn’t finish” or “2/5 stars” that didn’t really bother me the way the ones above did.

I get that it makes sense that people might want to use bookmarks to remind themselves or even warn others of things like untagged triggers or racism or even really OOC behavior or things like that.

I do like to read bookmarks because sometimes people say really lovely things in their bookmarks that they don’t leave in comments. But going forward I’ll try to take more of a “buyer beware” approach to it, and understand that if I’m going to do that, I will also see negative things sometimes and that’s not the problem of the bookmarker.

All of that being said, I do still think that the PSA still applies. I think a lot of people don’t realize that the authors can and do see what they put in their bookmarks, and some people might be uncomfortable thinking of an author reading their negative review. So although I phrased it badly and took my grumpiness out on the world at large, readers should just keep in mind that if they are uncomfortable with the idea of an author seeing what they put on a bookmark, they should make that bookmark private.
