Guys not to start any drama today but like when fiona apple said ‘how can i ask anyone to love me when all i do is ask to be left alone’
there are a NUMBER of folktale Woman-Creatures like selkies who exist to make the inherently coercive nature of heterosexual marriage explicit and to externalize male anxiety about how if your wife had actual autonomy she very well might disappear and you might never fucking hear from her again
which is a FASCINATING category of Woman-Creature imo
the great thing about #ownvoices is you don’t have to know jack shit about the history or experiences of people like you and you can write the worst most thoughtless drivel but it’s fine because it’s #ownvoices and your perspective is exactly as expert and valuable as that of anyone who has spent years as an advocate for your community
from @jewblog
EXACTLY
Adding some context of where Own Voices came from, since it was brought up in these very astute tags…
Own Voices was coined by author Corinne Duyvis in the 2010s to describe autistic representation by autistic people, in a time when the bulk of fiction about autism was by Autism Mom types. I’m pretty sure she was riffing on the slogan Nothing About Us Without Us, which is best known in disability rights circles in English.
Because it was a twitter hashtag it VERY quickly took off in the midst of (extremely necessary!) discussions by members of groups like We Need Diverse Books, who were advocating for the inclusion of marginalized authors in publishing, particularly publishing of children’s literature.
HOWEVER. The problem with hashtaggable slogans is that they are just. Not very nuanced! Even Duyvis herself has expressed frustration with some of the directions the hashtag ended up taking, eg publishers wanting work by marginalized authors ONLY as OwnVoices, which is to say, ONLY if they were Dealing With Their Marginalization. Black author but the book is just a fun romp and it isn’t about Black Issues? No thanks. Queer author doesn’t want to come out of the closet? Well then it isn’t OwnVoices is it? Better harass them out of the closet to make sure we are doing Rep correctly.
And as this thread calls out, the trend did not take into account that having an identity may not equal being knowledgeable about that identity (of course also because Identity Categories are not monolithic!).
Essentially, it was a phrase coined with good intentions, co-opted by marketing, and ultimately, arguably, a phrase that has outlived its usefulness. Twitter is dead OwnVoices is dead and me I feel also not so good
idk i would personally rather give up access to certain products seasonally or locally than have people enslaved to give me the ability to have any product any place any time. i think i can go without tomatoes in january.
Something that annoys me is the constant whining about "more queer spaces, more queer communities" but then they're immediately like "yeah! And we need ones that don't cost money or require a purchase!"
Girl that's exactly why they close down after a year. You NEED money to keep these places open. There's no magic Gay Money Pot with endless cash to keep these places open. It requires YOU to put your money where your values are!!
Like there was a queer coffee shop in my city. Owned and operated by a bunch of LGBT people. Not a cishet on the schedule. Tons of young people raved about it.
And it made it about 2 years before shutting down completely. Because all those young people who begged for a place exactly like this would just show up, not buy a single thing, and leave. You cannot build a community without putting your money into it. This isn't about capitalism, this is just reality. You can't open a restaurant where no one buys your food. You can't have a gay bar that only serves 5% of the population and actively excludes everyone else. This is what I mean when I say people confuse "community" and "friend group." You're not obligated to spend money when hanging out with your friend group. But if you want a lasting community centered space, you need to open up that wallet.
The long-lost remains of King Alfred the Great have been found buried under a car park, investigators claim.
Alfred died in 899, and his bones were repeatedly moved. He was buried in Winchester Cathedral until 1110, when his remains were moved to Winchester's Hyde Abbey, where they were interred before the high altar between the bodies of his wife and son. The abbey was demolished after the dissolution of the monasteries in 1539, and the place was left in ruins. In 1866, during construction of a workhouse on the site, the English antiquarian John Mellor excavated the area, found what he thought were Alfred's bones and had them reburied at nearby St. Bartholemew’s Church. But in 2013, when archaeologists exhumed and carbon-dated the bones from St. Bartholomew’s churchyard, they proved to date from over 200 years after Alfred’s death - sparking Graham's interest and search. He said: "Whoever’s bones they were, they weren’t Alfred’s. So, I decided to discover what happened to them. "The quest has taken me 13 years.”
shut up they did not find another goddamn king under another goddamn car park
unsung benefit i think a lot of ppl are sleeping on with using the public library is that i think its a great replacement for the dopamine hit some ppl get from online shopping. it kind of fills that niche of reserving something that you then get to anticipate the arrival of and enjoy when it arrives, but without like, the waste and the money.
bonus it ALSO fills that dopamine hit of in-person shopping. “oh I didn’t go in looking for this but hmm, I’m tempted… I can’t resist… oh ho ho I have made some irresponsible decisions at the library today [carrying my stack of ten random books]” and then it doesn’t even matter if you don’t like them because a) free b) you’re gonna give them back anyway
Librarian here! Please please please please PLEASE do this! We don’t have any way to know if you read them, and we don’t care! We’re happy to see those books go out because that helps our stats. And that affects how much money we can get.
So grab that silly paperback romance, and maybe this new YA fantasy, oh and check for the new movies too! And don’t forget to check Libby and hoopla for music and ebooks and e-audio.
sometimes its like. i would love to not have to think about gender and misogyny all the time but on account of us living on the Gender and Misogyny Planet i cant do that. so
8 and 11 for WIP ask game!
asfdh thank you for sending an ask, I got this and then promptly got stupid busy.
8. Who is your favorite character and why?
...Just going for the throat, huh.
They're all my favorites because they're all me, and of course none of them are me, but there's some core essence of me that I poured out onto the page. Not their mannerisms or anything that would fit on a character profile, but some deep down insecurity or hope.
ANYWAY. I'm going to be basic and say my current main character is my favorite. Oisin really is That Guy. He's a bitch. He's a lover. He's way smarter than I am. He's so so stupid. He believes he is fundamentally unlovable, but that's not going to stop him from demanding the respect he is owed. He calls a fairy prince ugly to his face on accident and then doubles down. Writing him is like being strapped to a very horny cannonball and I'm having the time of my life.
11. If your WIP was a cocktail, what would it be and why?
I think Oisin and Cu Roi are both ale/whiskey drinkers, but I want to find a cocktail that actually captures the book. I found one called an "Old Pal" -- equal parts rye whiskey, campari, and dry vermouth. That means it will be spicy, bitter, strong, and bright red. I might add a tiny bit of grenadine to make the red a little bloodier.
I have continued to consider the cocktail question and I think a fairy wine cocktail might be an orange wine, honey syrup or mead, rose syrup, and gin.
I would not like to drink this cocktail but I am intrigued.
This one resonated with me
Amazing
Last Line Game
@motherfuckingnazgul tagged me in a little game to share the last line I wrote! This is where I left off last night
Oisin could only watch, mesmerized, as the scream that was always somewhere in the back of his skull quieted. He hadn’t even known there was a scream to quiet.
If you see this, I tag you (I'm assuming everyone in the silm network has already been gotten by someone)

feminist retelling shoulsnt be the woman does some girlboss shit femist retelling is she does the same stuff except u actually give a shit abt her perspective and thoughts and feelings as a human being this time
there are four human activities and they are crafting, stories, math, and fucking around. whatever you're doing is at least one of those four.
