one important difference between mattowen and mattjay is like. owen thinks "my friend matt will never be a girl no matter what but if there was a way...haha. nevermind." and jay thinks "wow I wish all these girls were my friend matt." and neither of them have any degree of self awareness or reflection about what any of that could mean. god bless

when people describe not liking matt in matt and mara like finding him annoying or gross or boring personality wise, i really can't relate at all. his loneliness is palpable and he's trying so hard in every scene to be as normal as possible and failing and if you've #beenthere you absolutely feel it. genuinely a visceral film for me. like i cannot take it.

he's also cute and funny and silly sorry

matt and mara navigated the male emotional landscape in such a subtle way that was so impressive and authentic. it makes sense when the audience missed it (like it might be missed in real life). he's literally in love with a married women who keeps disappearing emotionally so he responds by detaching and disappearing in the way a man would.

mara is not a villain but they are both protecting their hearts in different ways. to discount matt's internal conflict as "manipulation" is a really disingenuous way of engaging with stories about fractured love or men in love.
