My thoughts on Heated Rivalry (kinda long so it’s under a cut)

First of all, I have read all of Heated Rivalry as a book, and I’ve watched a couple episodes of the show. I haven’t watched the whole show and I haven’t read any of the books after Heated Rivalry, like Long Game

So, basically, I don’t like how popular Heated Rivalry (HR) is. As a book, it’s fine, and the show adaptation is pretty good. However, it’s majority sex. I mean, the opening scene is sex scene. Most, if not all, chapters have sex in them. And I’m not against books with sex in them, I read and finished it after all. But, my issue with HR is that it’s so popular. Straight women read HR and watch the show and are the reason it’s so popular. And of course, I’m happy that a queer book has gotten so popular and given so much attention, but I’m not sure why HR was that book. I mean, I know why, it’s because it has a ton of sex.

There so many amazing mlm books that aren’t filled with sex, and I think those should be more popular. Hockey rinks get called “the boy aquarium” and people post at hockey games being like “when do they start kissing??” and people call actual athletes “real like Heated Rivalry” and to me it’s weird as hell. Those are real people, I think it’s weird to ship and say that real people are like two characters from a sex novel

And why’d Heated Rivalry get a show? Why not another mlm book? Maybe one written by an actual gay man? Like I have nothing against Rachel Reid, she’s bi and so she is still much, much better than a straight woman writing that kind of book. But why didn’t a book focused on the love between two men written by a gay man get a show? Because the show is the reason it’s so popular. So why’d a book that’s majority sex get a show?

But, my problem with Heated Rivalry isn’t even about the fact it’s majority sex or that it’s not written by a gay/bi/queer man, it’s the fan base. As I mentioned earlier, the majority of the fans are straight women who then go and sexualize straight men. And obviously a book cannot control it’s fan base, but it says something about the book (and show) for attracting that fan base
