Maia was surprised to discover this was something he was good at: he was able, in his turn, to ask the right questions to make the matter clear in his mind and the petitioner's. ... then the only answer was to make all of them unhappy. And if he was not trying to juggle three sets of competing and conflicting demands, the solution was easy. ... If thou canst wrangle townships and petty lords and the representative of the Prince of Thu-Cethor and canst deliver a judgement they do not like - for in sooth it did not kill thee - then thou canst surely deal with the Corezhas.
I love this turn about! Love it! Love it!
One thing that certainly wasn't obvious to me the first time I read Goblin but is so fascinating to me is that despite the terrible circumstances he came to the throne under, Maia does not come in with a skills deficit. Maia is underinformed but once he manages to put together the information he needs, he knows what to do with it most of the time.
But to actually do the correct thing he has to he has to be willing to make everyone angry at him, you know, the thing that would have put him at risk of physical harm for the past decade. And frankly, that's a hard thing to do even without all the trauma. It would certainly stress me out!
And then, in this chapter he still does that!
I think it's also notable that doing all that figuring out how to do this part of his job gives him a giant headache that makes him take off the rest of the day. He doesn't just figure it out and now it's easy. He figures it out and it sucks and though he'll put even more together, it's still only a small hop forward in his character growth and it only benefits him in specific ways, not in everything being permanently easier.
Like, at this point he still hasn't figured out how to chill out and let himself do things for himself. Even this he sees as figuring out how to do the job of Edrehasivar VII, and that doesn't really help him in the privacy of being Maia. It's really interesting to think though, that he hasn't been able to say no or make other people angry for a decade and this is basically the first time he decides actively to do that. One hopes he'll find the ability to do that as Maia soon, too.
One other thing is that he still can't figure out at this point that if he does this sort of thing it won't make Everyone hate him, and in fact it will make some people affected by the judgement really like him (the people of Nelozho sent him a card signed by everyone so like they defo don't seen to have a problem with his judgement). I wonder if he would ever figure that out, that being as just as possible will win him favor even if he's afraid of anger.
Yes, I love this point so much!
ok time for a whole post about varenechibel iv. because this man is so interesting to me.
the first thing we learn about the varedeise emperors is that they are 1. isolationist and hostile to other nations 2. corrupt and prone to nepotism and 3. firmly aligned with the contingent of eastern lords.
and then... well, as it turns out, varenechibel was really none of those things? he tried to negotiate for peace on the steppes, and was actively negotiating a trade agreement with barizhan when he died. he's so deeply anti-corruption that he exiled his own cousin for even vaguely suggesting that he might deserve special treatment. he was invested in the idea of bridging the istandaärtha, which is directly counter to the eastern lords' interests. even when he DOES go out of his way to favor a major eastern house, it's the tethimada, who were previously snubbed by the varedeisei.
certainly, all signs indicate that he personally held some xenophobic and racist views. (although he wasn't necessarily always hostile to all those with goblin heritage, since he was seemingly friends with orthema to some extent. ok i'm aware that counts for very little the bar is under the floor on this one) but anyway. xenophobic beliefs do not isolationist policy make.
his lukewarm support of the eastern factions is imo probably a symptom of his deep dislike for partiality. which... well, his father is THE poster child for varedeise corruption. setheris is biased, but his account of varevesena giving out titles to his friends' newborn children is pretty damning; and even csevet basically politely confirms he was Nepotism Georg. from that same conversation, csevet doesn't seem to think varenechibel had any close personal friends at all.
so... is it just me, or does this paint varenechibel as essentially... defined in opposition to his father? this guy comes to the throne, looks at the mess of his father's and grandfather's reigns (and even prior...) and goes. ok we are NOT doing ANY OF THAT anymore. becomes so staunchly opposed to favoritism he eschews even having close relationships in the first place. with his lord chancellor appointment he's clearly trying his darndest to turn this into a meritocracy (chavar's eventual incompetence notwithstanding, he's given the job because he understands the chancellery) and he even tries to put aside his personal discomfort with it to reach out to barizhan more—he wants to secure valuable trade routes, sure, but it's also telling that that certainly doesn't seem to be something his father was ever thinking of doing.
i've been thinking about this all evening it's so good. imagine being ao3 user astardanced and showing up to tge fandom 11 years post publication and slamming down objectively the best nemolis fic in the entire tag. in general they are really fucking good at bringing depth to minor characters in a way that lines up perfectly w canon but this in particular is excellent. sheveän is mean and she's ambitious she's not motherly or kind but she Does love her husband of course she attempted a coup! of course she hates maia! and nemolis did like her... just incredible
EDIT WAIT THEYRE ON TUMBLR. @muppetebbtide thank you for everything... i'm such a fan...
rereading for genuinely the 100th time and another line i cant stop thinking about is:
He doesn't know what kind of man thou art, he reminded himself. He knows thee not, nor any of his siblings, and thou never didst try to change that. He sees only Edrenechibel. Looking at Maia's stiff ears and clenched hands, Nemolis wondered if he should have not tied himself quite so hard to Varenechibel; he had rejected the prefix, but perhaps he should have picked a Bel- or an Edre- without the suffix . But the court would have eaten him alive.
like that's why maia is so transformative as emperor in canon he has nothing to lose!!! he has no reputation he has no tenuous alliances he refuses to buckle under the weight of history or expectation. he refuses to be anyone but himself, his mother's son. he owes nothing to his father. but that's not true for nemolis he will always have to be toeing a line that he's been aware of his whole life. he is kinder and he is better than varenechibel but he has to pay his respects. they'll eat him alive if he doesn't. they're going to eat maia alive no matter what he does so maia says fuck it and does what he wants. godddd what a good fic
One more comment on The Goblin Emperor, following my recent reread? Again, close to the end:
---
He lay on the bed and closed his eyes so he wouldn’t look at Beshelar, and the next thing he knew was Avris saying, “Serenity, it is a beautiful morning and the Great Avar has sent you three messages already about meeting him in the east stables.”
That’s right, Maia thought, I have a horse now.
He sat up. “Do we have time?”
“Yes, Serenity,” Avris said. “The Great Avar has made that very plain.”
“Avris?”
Avris said, “The Great Avar, Serenity, has spoken very firmly on the subject to Lord Berenar and Mer Aisava and we do not know whom else. He says that you must be allowed time to do things that are for yourself or you will go mad.”
“Oh.” Maia felt his face heating.
“So you have the entire morning, Serenity,” Avris said encouragingly. “And the Great Avar is waiting.”
Maia was aware of the irony, but he was too grateful for his grandfather’s interference to resent it.
---
I honestly think this was the single kindest thing that anyone in this book has done for Maia.
Just. His relationship with his grandfather will always been complicated, given his mother and how abandoned Maia felt she was by her family, abandoned to her death, for all he knows that legally and politically his grandfather had very little choice. And then the politics of their respective positions on top of that. But over the course of the state visit, they have built something rather warm and rather honest together, and then this little moment at the end of it …
I don’t think anyone else at court has at any point fully understood how titanic the pressure is that Maia has been under. And more to the point, how he has absolutely no escape from it. The Emperor has no privacy. None. Maia has had not one single moment to himself since his father died. He has been constantly surrounded by those who have the ability to judge him, to betray him, to spread rumours about him, to attempt to kill him. There’s no escape. He has been thrown into a job he has no training for, against people hostile to him to the point of death, under the worst possible circumstances, and has spent months now living every moment of every day in that pressure cooker with no privacy, no ability to cry, to lose his temper, to have a moment to himself, while several massive sections of his court have actively betrayed and tried to kill him. And no one … No one gets it. The sheer amount of damage that lack of privacy has done.
Even Csevet. I love that the Avar spoke to Csevet specificially. Because Csevet …
He’s trying to help. He’s been single-handedly ensuring Maia’s political (and to a large extent physical) survival from the moment Maia decided to trust him. He works himself to the bone for Maia. But I don’t think he … I don’t think he understood that Maia has no privacy? The nohecharei have a better one, especially after that painful conversation about not being able to be his friends, but I don’t think Csevet …
Csevet has friends. Maia has at least once, on realising this, tried to give him small opportunities to speak to them. Csevet, when he clocks off, goes to his own rooms and his own friends and his own business. I don’t think he quite … He’s a courier, not a member of the royal family. I don’t think he quite understood that Maia doesn’t have a life outside of their scheduled hours together? Csevet was only doing what he thought was necessary, arranging Maia’s schedule to do the most longterm good possible. But he did …
The amount of pressure Maia has been under has been horrific, and months of that? Years of that? A future without end? With no privacy? Not even a moment to himself to act as a release valve?
The Great Avar is right. Maia would have gone insane. Completely and utterly.
Nobody intended to do that. As the conversation with the archprelate also revealed, none of them quite realised the amount of damage that had been done. But the Avar did. Because he’s an emperor too, and while the goblin court is nowhere near as rigid as the elvish one, any royal figure still understands much better how sharply defined the edges of their lives are. He saw … He saw the splinters in Maia, understood them for what they were.
And in this one single act, I think he did more kindness for Maia than anyone else has done.
It’s an apology. For everything that happened to Chenelo, everything the Avar could not stop. His relationship with his grandson is so strained, and for such good reasons. So this was, I think, an apology. But it was also just a kindness. Because he saw Maia splintering, and wanted to help. Realised he was the only one with both the clout and the understanding to help. So he went out of his way to speak with those closest to Maia about what he needed to stay sane.
And gave Maia the courage, too, to start maybe asking for himself for what he needs to stay sane.
I don’t know. It’s a tiny moment. But I really do think this one single thing is the most vitally kind thing anyone in this story ever did for Maia.
Because without it, without this sliver of leeway, I really do think he would have gone insane.

was at the public pool yesterday and i kept looking around at all the women with fat and rolls and stretch marks and discolouration and cellulite and scars and thighs that bounce and bellies that jiggle and it's like wow. literally Everyone has these features that society is trying to convince us are evil and unnatural. idk it just really put things into perspective for me. highly recommend checking out your local public pool
This is what I was alluding to when I discussed that the volume of name changes you have to make as a trans person highlights the ridiculous amount of documentation attached to you.
The reason your snacks are unsatisfying is that you need both carb and protein.
Carb starts your engine, protein keeps it going.
No carb, engine don’t start. No protein, engine dies out fast.
Easy carb add on:
Cookie
Fruit (canned or fresh)
Chips
Piece of bread
Popcorn
Crackers
Easy protein add on:
Nuts
Spoonful of nut butter
Cheese
Roasted chickpea snacks
Glass of milk (dairy or non dairy)
Small canned sausages or similar
Sugar in there.
I am pleased by people messaging me telling me that after adding a carb or protein to their snacks or meals they feel more satisfied all day. Yes, my plan is working. People are getting through their days with less hangry.
I think we should figure out what age we’re living in now so we can say how it’s collapsing to each other
Our age of plastics is collapsing
Our age of information is collapsing! *remembers generative AI, nods to self* our age of information is collapsing.
It never fails to amuse me when I get “hello influencer” emails wanting me to push questionable products to my followers.
Like worstie, I can barely promote my own published book without wanting to curl up and die.
The fuck makes you think I’ll shill your discount wish shit?
Also, it's Tumblr. If I try to tell anyone about your knock-off Wish-quality sex toy there’s going to be a horde of Autistic lesbians doing a power point presentation in the notes about safe sex toy material and correct battery storage.
Which I am 100% down for, but it will not get you any sales.
I was trying to figure out if you were someone important on a other platform, because there's no way in hell anyone actually thinks you can be classified as "Influencer" if you have a big Tumblr blog.
And then also think advertising to this mob would be a good idea
There are actually lots of people who sell stuff successfully on here, usually drop ship stuff.
They’re just not disclosing it as ads, which they are supposed to do, and instead it's marketed in a very Tumblr-esque way which can be summed up as “omg guys look how CUTE this is” followed by a different account underneath going “omg found it!!” and it links to a drop ship site with the item(s).
And the link usually has an affiliate tracker in it, which you may or may not be able to spot unless you’re familiar with them, which is also something you are legally supposed to disclose.
I used to get a lot of offers from around 2016-2020 to sell “moon lamps” on here, y’know those orb lights that look like a moon? Yeah. I was offered a higher kickback to make it look like I wasnt posting an add because these sellers know Tumblrites don’t like ads.
They wanted it to look as organic and hyped up as possible and then I’d just so happen to be like “omg you guys it's on sale” and post a link. Which is skeevy as shit and also illegal af in the US.
It’s like the insta/tiktok girlies saying “link in bio” to get around saying “here’s a product I make money on if you buy it” because they want to sound like your friend because people are more likely to impulse buy stuff if a “friend” is recommending something.
They’re also trusting that everyone knows “link in bio” means “affiliate link” which is technically not enough of a disclosure but whatever.
This is why I tag all my own book promos with “affiliate links” because depending on which storefront you buy Hunger Pangs from, I may get a kickback from the vender which I do to help mediate the fees I lose from distribution. It’s not much—literal pennies in some cases—but I’m still legally required to state it.
It’s also why when I do post products I use or like, I make a point of letting people know I’m not an affiliate and not sponsored because despite the legal ramifications these people are flirting with by not disclosing their affiliate status, I want to be fully transparent with my followers when it comes to me trying to sell them things.
Y’all keep my lights on by reading my work and through my ko-fi and patreon. I am not about to risk that trust for the sake of some shitty vibrator sales from a sketch-ass drop shipper who wants me to pretend I’m not selling you things.
So, yeah. People do successfully sell stuff on here. A lot of us small indie creators sell our own work all the time.
But there are also drop-ship sellers on here who get enough of a kick-back from affiliate links to make selling cutesy kitsch stuff worth their time on here. They’re just making sure you don’t know you’re being marketed to.
Throwback to when I openly talked about this and got blocked by several huge “meme” blogs that were actually drop shippers who didn’t like me lifting up the rock and exposing how they hide their ads in plain sight lol
Hey, I’m going to hold your hand when I say this, but if you didn’t realize these types of posts/blogs were ads… that’s okay! They are designed to trick you!
These type of undeclared sellers are relying on you believing that Tumblr is different from other social media platforms where the advertising is usually more blatant. They are also relying on your trust in your community not to put undisclosed ads onto your dash.
After all, everyone knows Tumblr is a sinkhole where profit goes to die and everyone hates ads. Why would anyone waste time doing that here… unless they can adapt what they’re doing to make you think you’re not being marketed to, because Tumblr as a user base would never allow that kind of thing. Right?
Turns out, not so much.
Some people might say, “well that’s just obvious! You’d have to be really silly not to realize it!”
And maybe it was obvious to them.
I know it was obvious to me. But I also know I have enough online experience to play “spot the affiliate link” and enough knowledge as a indie author about how those links are supposed to be disclosed by law, to know when someone is being dishonest and trying to make a post seem organic and not like an ad.
But not everyone has the same knowledge or life experiences to put the context clues together, and that’s why I wrote the above post because many, many, many people on here are unaware they are reblogging ads—usually while talking about how much they hate ads!
You’re not dumb or silly or worthless or any of the unkind things some people are calling themselves in the notes. You just needed more information. Happily I was able to provide it and now you know what to look for. Go forth and scroll with newfound knowledge 🫡
the "came back wrong" trope except like... they didnt. like this mad scientists wife died, and so he studied necromancy, brought her back, and she came back and it all worked. like she came back exactly the same as she was before with literally no difference. but the scientist guy is like "oh no... what have i done.... shes Different now!!!! she came back Wrong!!!!" and shes just like. chilling. reading a book. cooking dinner. shes just so so normal but in the guys mind hes like "oh shes soooo weird" but shes just normal

NO its a JOKE and YOU DONT GET IT. ITS NOT THAT DEEP
While she was dead he put his memory of her on such a high pedestal that she could never live up to it alive
alternatively‚ she came back perfectly fine but he thinks she came back wrong‚ because the tragic reality is that he never actually knew his wife
im going INSANE thats MY POST.
It's your post but the journey to posting it changed it to such a degree that even its closest intimacies are now foreign to you. Sorry dude.
I want to pursue every degree just to see what’s up.
