man let me tell you as someone who worked hospital transport during the pandemic and had a very somatic experience with the kind of profound weight of a human body in various stages of death and decay, the scene in “give and take” where hawkeye and kellye and a few corpsmen are lifting the dead north korean soldier from the cot to a litter to be taken away is such an incredible piece of visual, physical storytelling. beyond the obviously plot relevance of that soldier’s death to the young american GI who shot him in teaching him the humanity of the Other, we get to see this brief moment of utmost gentleness in the handling of a deceased human being, but not just any human being: an enemy combatant.

when i say that some nurses do not treat the bodies of their patients, living or dead, with the kind of care they are owed, i mean that. maybe it’s less likely for living patients, but all bets are off on the dead (and the near dying). i’ve watched nurses and aides insult the bodies of fat decedents. mistreat the bodies of drug addicts. refuse to help me move patients and left me having to either wait god knows long how long for help or move them laterally myself. quibble over signing transfer paperwork when a patient started coding (dying) on the way to his hospice floor and they couldn’t agree on who would have to handle the work of preparing his body.

there is something to be said in the overwork nurses are put through and shit but man if that episode of M*A*S*H doesn’t exemplify everything i ever wanted to see and was always deprived of in healthcare: genuine understanding of the sanctity of the human body after it has undergone the gauntlet of dying in a hospital. what a cruel place to die for so many people, and crueler still when you’re dying in a combat hospital in a war zone. and M*A*S*H gets that, because M*A*S*H is built on the unfaltering gentle loving kindness of its medical staff and of course they would lift even an enemy soldier at every corner of his sheets and at his sides and lift him smoothly and deposit him so softly there isn’t even a noise. no rolling head, no untucked arm, no quibbling about the paperwork.

and all this because the show never loses sight of the humanity of its patients as it focuses on the humanity of its medical staff. so many nurses, aides, and doctors lose sight of the suffering of their patients because their suffering in underfunded, understaffed, overburdened medical systems. but hawkeye pierce never does. kellye never does. even the corpsman, who are paid shit and worked hard, taught from basic training on up that north koreans are the red devil, the enemy, don’t lose sight of the fact that the man in front of them is closer to them than the men who signed their draft papers or the general breathing down their necks. and “give and take” was meant to reiterate that to a 1980s audience and every audience thereafter. and it just does such a good job of it, even in the little detail of how carefully their transfer that unnamed soldier’s body. i feel crazy

i feel like ‘the joker is wild’ is such an important bj episode because it really shows everyone how fucking psychotic he can be. and i say that as someone who is nauseatingly infatuated with him.

like we already know he has some flaws. saw glimpses of his temper when that handyman made a pass at peg and then saw how reckless he can be in ‘wheelers an dealers’

but tjiw feels different to me. like one, that trapper complex really comes out hard, but i also think it shows how possessive he can be. like yes i think a big part of the prank was to prove to hawk and everyone else that he’s just as creative as trapper, if not more so.

but there’s also something about making sure hawk’s attention is on him. like bj gives him no choice but to constantly think of him, and tbh, it seems like he enjoys the control he has over hawk during that episode—the power.

even if it means his best friend is looking over his shoulder at every turn, unable to trust anyone or anything, making a fucking fool of himself. bj just sits back and watches hawk unravel and delights in it.

these people are already living in such a stressful environment, cortisol levels probably through the roof, and bj is over here having a laugh at his wide eyed, twitchy friend who is very clearly coming apart at the seams, and all to prove that, what, he’s better than trapper?

this sounds like i’m angry with him or something, but i’m more intrigued than anything. it’s for sure one of my fave episodes. super compelling and says a lot about him as a friend and person in general.

imo, the prank is pretty cruel, and it’s kind of astounding to me that no one steps in.

anyway i love it a lot and i love bj a lot and i think that he’s maybe not entirely right in the head <3

my mom and i watched mash together (it was her idea, since she grew up with it) so she's put up with a lot of my incessant rambling about it and recently she pointed out something too insane not to share and too smart for me to take credit for

we were talking about gfa; bj's avoidance and how hawk tries to make him say goodbye, but bj dismisses him kind of coldly ("you're not dying"). and i could go on about that forever but she stopped me, paused for a second, and then said "maybe that's why hawkeye makes him smell the food. he's trying to force him to accept where they are."

bj refuses to eat anything after hawk makes him smell it, because he can't stand it if he can taste it. he can't say goodbye to hawkeye, or else he'll have to admit that their friendship exists because of korea; that he was in korea at all. in the winchester tapes, bj tells charles that peg's cooking is terrible, but he uses "internal propaganda" to convince himself it's edible. he can't stomach it otherwise

hawk is just as avoidant in some ways, but he admits himself that how he proves he's real, that he's Here, is by trying to get a reaction out of others. and bj wants the opposite, to ignore that he was ever here at all. so if hawk can force him to accept this, even just by smelling the awful powdered eggs, that's about the realest you can get. and if bj can just once admit that this is it, they're really leaving each other, maybe hawk will be able to accept it himself

the question that haunts me about hawkeye is how much of that is just how he really is and how much of that is stress behavior from being in one of the worst possible situations imaginable for a doctor to be in. like is that bird naturally that scraggly or is he so neurotic and stressed that he's ripping all his feathers out himself
