watching trump slowly figure out what the presidency actually entails is a lot like what i imagine gilderoy lockhart looked like when the hogwarts teachers called his bluff and sent him into the chamber of secrets
alright story time folks. this actually happened a few months ago, but i was just reminded by @yawpkatsiās FUBAR.Ā
i was sitting in the waiting room at my therapists, and this middle age man with a service dog walk in and sit down across the room from me. his dog has a service vest on and immediately lays down underneath the chair his owner is sitting in (not an easy feat as he was a pitbull mix of some sort). anyway, the man and i start talking, and he says his dog (canāt remember his name, so lets call him james), is for his ptsd. we keep talking and after a while james starts whining. i stop talking, cause idk what that means. but the man just smiles and asks me if i want to pet james. i, of course say yes, never turn down an opportunity to pet a doggo. he looks down at james and tells him toĀ āgo on thenā, and immediatey james leaps the few feet seperating us and sits at my feet. he starts nuzzling at me and licking my hands, and i look up at the man, cause this doesnāt really seem like proper service dog behavior. i tell him that, he laughs, and says james is much better behaved when they arenāt here, cause james tends to get overwhelmed here. iām kinda confused, its not like there are a lot of people or noise or smells in here? but he continues and says itās because jamesā primary job is to comfort ppl in distress and in a waiting room for a therapist, just about everyone needs some comfort.
so thatās the story of the dog that wanted to help everyone and almost made me cry cause he cared about me so much.

also guys i think itās time to start spelling āsmallā right again,, itās been long enough
see the thing is, at this point, smol isnāt even a āmispellingā of small anymore; it has its own connotations. while small is a regular adjective, smol acts more like a diminutive marker, which English has been lacking
in essence, a smol dog will always be a small dog, but not all small dogs are smol.
what the fuck are you talking about
Linguistic evolution. Accept the smolness into your vocabulary and be cleansed.
@nentindo, assuming youāre asking in good faith & not just trying to dismiss a perfectly accurate analysis, hereās an elaboration of what @princeofdoomrps said:
small and smol mean different things, so theyāre different words. smol means something like āsmall in a cute wayā & not just like both small and cute but the two are related. This is what makes smol more like a diminutive marker (c.f. -tje in Dutch, or -let/-ling/-ie [like in kidlet/kidling/kiddie] in some forms of English*)
note that: 1. not all small things are smol. Microbes and electrons? Generally not considered smol.
2. similar-sized things in the same category can be smol or not depending on cuteness. So, a tiny cottage may be a smol house, but an equally tiny tenement room that is an awful place to live? Not smol.
3. smol can refer to youth (e.g. the people I call my āsmol frensā are mostly taller than I am but much younger)
4. It also can have implications of fondness/emotional attachment, especially, from what Iāve seen, in fandoms where people call characters things like āmy smol sonā, which doesnāt have to mean someone whoās actually young, short, or cute at all. Like, IDK if anyone uses that to refer to Hannibal but I wouldnāt be surprised?
So! There are contexts where you could call something/someone small but not smol, and contexts where you could call something/someone smol but not small. This is the textbook definition of ādifferent wordsā. They are no longer the same word and op, you are very welcome to only use one of them! Anyone is!Ā
Just be aware that pretty much every part of your vocabulary, someone at some point has decried as āwrongā usage and complained about people mangling the language this way, and when you do this thing youāre carrying on a long tradition of pompous silliness.
ā
* English isnāt completely lacking in diminutive markers just kinda deficient. And some of those markers have become derisive or dismissive in usage, which i hope never happens to my smol word-child, smol.

The Olympics is definitely the time we all look at our parents wondering why they didnāt sign us up for a sport at an early age.
So I learned my new favorite history fact in my AP US class today. Itās hilarious and goes a bit like this
In 1989, President Bush sent troops to Panama to capture the dictator and drug lord, Manuel Noriega. But Noriega had fled to (I had to look up the full name) the Apostolic Nunciature of the Holy See. The troops couldnāt exactly get in, so they surrounded the place and has to wait him out, or somehow force him out. And itās crazy how they did it. The literal United States Navy SEALs did this And it is real history
They blasted rock and roll music for days until he gave up
Apparently, Noriega only liked opera, so this annoyed him. But it gets better. The playlist was not only obnoxiously loud and obnoxiously American, it had a sense of irony. Here are some highlights:
Danger Zone Freedom Fighter Gonna Tear Your Playhouse Down Give It Up I Fought the Law and the Law Won If I Had a Rocket Launcher Nowhere to Run Panama Paranoid Prisoner of Rock and Roll Rock and a Hard Place Stay Hungry Theyāre Coming to Take Me Away This Means War Wanted Dead or Alive
And my personal favorite, and a thing that actually happened: Never Gonna Give You Up
I just⦠Imagine the board meeting āHuh, how are we going to force this guy out of hiding?ā āOh, I have an idea! Why donāt we blast loud rock music?ā āThat just might work! And we should do it with a sense of irony, just to make it funnier!ā
