"Happens to the best of us," she reassures against your ear, callused digits tracing your spine as her arms cocoon you.
"You're the best of us. And it never happens to you." You sob after the accusation, taking more napkins from your pocket. Their velvety surface does nothing to alleviate your galled nose. The assuaging scratching of her nails over your back induced you to forget, at least for a couple of seconds, the cause of your weeping— Ellie is right here, cradling you the way one would cradle a newborn animal— how come you keep whining if you don't have a reason to?
"Who's counting?" Her dismissal is almost inaudible, meant to placate the thoughts that plague your mind. She tangles her fingers in your locks, palm brushing your nape as she massages your scalp.
You ruined her shirt, what an embarrassing sight. Your tears had deluged a wet puddle from her collar to her shoulder, a conspicuous manifestation of your dashed hopes— you feel pathetic, your reiterated attempts to be good at something anew pointless in a way that makes you question your entire worth. You had failed. You had cried. And you would surely fail and cry again.
"You will pass next time," she coos, and it only causes you to mewl harder.
"I had to pass this one, Els. I should pass all of them." You bury your face in her shoulder, letting the salty drops run down Ellie's clavicle. Your eyes resemble waterfalls. Beautiful. Cold.
She doesn't move an inch— not even if her body dithers from the way you are breathing on her neck. She stays there, steady, as the entirety of your weight leans on her. You are safe with her. You can cry with her.
The closer you are, the more her hands work on you. Her palms are soft, her temperature anchoring. Just like a tide, gently washing the beach's remains away, her soothing motions on your torso endeavor to cleanse off the ravaging heartache of not being enough ♡

You’re late tonight.
You had a long day at work, and all you wanted to do was sit back on your couch, scroll through your phone, and mindlessly watch reels. You’re ready to turn your brain off for the day.
Ellie’s still out. She had to work overtime. In that period where you’re here and she isn’t, you take advantage of the opportunity to take a long, hot shower and wear something comfy.
When she finally returns, you’re sprawled on the sofa with your phone dangling from one hand, barely holding on. You’re half asleep, and she took longer than expected to return.
A smirk makes its way onto her face. You look really cute like this. She takes a step closer and snaps a photo of you, just for her to keep. She lifts you up and takes you back to bed.
You wake up early the next morning, groggy and disoriented despite it being a weekend. Ellie’s awake, making coffee for the two of you in your little kitchen. You step out of your bedroom and find her there. When you check your phone, you find that she left all your messages on seen on Instagram, ignoring every single reel you meticulously picked from your feed to send to her.
It wasn’t a few reels either. You spent the entire evening last night doomscrolling on Instagram, sending her every other video and expecting a reply from her like always. She never leaves your reels on seen.
You scoff at the tiny text under your last message and look up at her while she waits for the coffee to brew. She hears you and turns around, offering a warm smile and a soft “hey, you.”
You don’t return the smile, nor do you reply to her greeting. You storm into the kitchen and grab yourself an apple from the refrigerator.
Ellie’s expression falls a fraction, and she turns to face you after you passed her.
“Hey… what happened?” She asks in a confused murmur, reaching out to caress your shoulder. You shrug her off and shoot her a glare.
“You’re really asking that?” You ask.
“Yeah. Did I… do something?” She replies, truly confused as to why you’re acting like this now. You just woke up, what could she have possibly done?
Huffing and puffing, you lift your phone and turn it on, shoving it in her face so she can see the little display of ‘seen’ in your chat with her.
“Not a single one answered to. Not one.” You grumble, watching as she leans back then narrows her eyes to see what you’re trying to show her.
“Your reels?” She questions, still thoroughly baffled. You give her a sharp nod.
“Baby, I was gonna watch them. Honest,” she tries to reassure you. A hand finds its way to your waist, and you try to shy away from it, but she doesn’t let you. “I came back home late last night, and I just woke up.”
Her explanation is punctuated by a quiet chuckle at the absurdity of this. Your face reddens and you look away.
Ellie leans closer, forcing you to look back.
“Look. I’ll make pancakes, we can drink our coffee, and I’ll watch your reels during then. Sounds good?”
You want to be a little petty. Being tired and all has you wanting more attention and affection, so sometimes you resort to a bit of whining. But you can’t do it. Ellie’s too sweet. She knows how this little game of yours works, and she plays it perfectly.
You relent with a sigh. “Yeah. Okay.”
Your girl smiles and kisses your cheek, holding you a little tighter before letting go to pour the now finished coffee.
