i love declining birth rates 🥰 "what a horrible problem! society will collapse!" oopsie it looks like you're gonna have to make having children worth it 😊 teehee you're gonna have to improve society in order to fix this problem, or it will all collapse. oh noooooo. how horrible. :3c
Also? Our current population is a fucking anomaly:
Some people make plans by having a handful of gambles they are fairly likely to win. You pick three things you'd like that you have 60% chance of succeeding with, and just see what you'll get - if you luck out on more than one, nice, that means you get to choose which one you like better. And if none of them pan out, then well, it's time to do something completely different. The basic principle is that you can never be 100% sure about anything, so if you only try when you're sure you'll succeed, you never end up doing anything.
Then there's the people who make solid, specific, exact plans. You have one plan that's got 95% chance of succeeding, and if it doesn't, you'll just have to kill everyone in this room including yourself. Day ruined, week ruined, entire life ruined. Scrap everything and hope you get reincarnated into better circumstances.
When you start dating someone, it's pretty important to find out early on which type either of you is. It's rough to learn on the fly when you're already on the way that the one who suggested this activity has no idea whether it's going to work and there is no plan beyond "let's get over there and see what's there." Or that your partner bet absolutely everything on this specific plan working out, and you've got no secondary plan if this one doesn't pan out.
We report: it is early evening, and the sun’s journey through the atmosphere is getting longer and longer. The heat has made us feel sleepy, and we are finding it difficult to care about anything but the movements of the clouds. We are here for hours, in this specific moment.
i feel like if you stabbed an angel the blood trail would look like this
Hey. Hey!
This is an anti-despair checkpoint! You must share something you're looking forward to before scrolling on.
I recently found my “gold” hammer after misplacing it. It’s my favorite tool ever because it looks like a regular hammer trying to be fancy,
but then you twist both halves and unscrew it to find a flat-head screwdriver in the middle.
BUT, if you twist the very end and unscrew that
you find a phillips screwdriver.
BUT DON’T THINK THAT’S ALL THERE IS! THERE’S MORE!! unscrew the very end again to find a smaller flat-head screwdriver!
BUT THAT’S STILL NOT THE END!!
unscrew the end of this screwdriver to find a final, teeny tiny, flat-head screwdriver
look at how cute it is!
it’s like a matryoshka doll of tools.
I have one of these and I keep it in my IT toolkit because that teeny little screwdriver is the right side for laptop casings, but because it lives inside a large object it’s harder to misplace than a standard tiny screwdriver. Also because the look on a client’s face when you bring out a brass hammer to fix their laptop is absolutely wild.
Alright so after seramyudreamer made a post about some musicals giving original brooches to the rest of the team I JUST HAD TO DRAW THEM AND STUFF– I MEAN I’VE WANTED OFFICIAL, PROPER BROOCHES SO BAD SO LONG so yeah. Fanart happened.
The accuracy of the brooches is limited mind you; the pictures were sorta blurry, and I’ve never been good with proportions. Also as you can see in the reference pictures, a lot of the “metal” is really shiny, so t’s hard to tell whether or not some parts were meant to be silvery or not; so with the exception of Moon, Mercury and Saturn, I did all of the brooches with gold alone. Uranus and Neptune got different shade gold (although, Neptune does sorta look like she had a light colored crystal on her brooch… I still went with the gold look though).
Also, with the Inners (except Moon), I added a small planetary symbol into each “big” gem. Now excuse me while I adore Mercury’s beautiful brooch like a dork. Oh and the brooches themselves are in a transparent PNG, look at how pretty they are!
Being small Nobody quite recovers from being a child: the asymmetry of power between parents and children always leaves a trace
perhaps some will disagree, but i think the world got worse when we changed the colour of the night
this is what i mean
Via @bulbaderp
To be clear, THIS is how nights of the future should be lit
This is bat friendly street lighting, which not only looks sick as fuck but allows bats to pass through without disturbance, as they cannot see red.
orange and especially white lights deter bats and prevent them from reaching feeding grounds at nighttime. Please if you can, write to your local council and encourage red street lights!!!!
ALSO! red light doesn’t fuck up human night vision much so you can go in and out of lit areas without readjusting
the red light not fucking up human night vision is also why a number of older cars had gauges that lit up red at night
i legit miss red lights in cars and appliances n stuff. red city lighting is goated
Our local newspaper ran a story about the legendary graffiti artist who recently passed away and. Literally everything about it is fucking insane. I'm insane about it.
So this guy has been extremely active for around fifteen years, during which he spread these beautiful, high quality pieces all over the country, way over a thousand of his standard signature, and probably thousands more. He did completely batshit stuff like literally spray painting an entire train from top to bottom or leaving his signature at the top of a 600ft tall overpass and this whole time, only five people from his crew know who he really is. To everyone else it's a complete mystery.
And then he dies at the age of 35. A few weeks after his death, his crew shows up at his completely unassuming parents' doorstep, reveals who they are and asks if they can host a memorial exhibition of his art.
Turns out, this dude has been leading an insane double life. In the daytime he was a meek little office worker with a partially paralyzed arm and no social life to speak of. In the nighttime he was a fucking legend. Not only did he climb that fucking 600ft overpass, he did it WITH A PHYSICAL DISABILITY. THE MADLAD. And throughout the entire time, fifteen years, he got caught once. ONCE. HE DID ALL THAT UNNOTICED. THAT'S INSANE.
Op do you know where one could find his art?
His pseudonym is EXUDT, you can find a lot of it posted by spotters on Instagram and Facebook, and I think I saw a few photos of his art on Tumblr over the years:)
https://www.instagram.com/exud.t/
There's some really great pictures over on flickr too.
This post has been blowing up so I wanted to add some personal anecdotes regarding EXUDT:
I went to the memorial exhibition his friends and family hosted and it was probably one of the most breathtaking experiences I've ever had. The entire art scene of the city showed up. They screened a movie they made out of videos EXUDT shot of himself painting and it was so crowded that not everybody fit into the backyard where the exhibition was.
His mum baked his favourite cake for the exhibition visitors 🥺🥺🥺
EXUDT left his standard signature in every single town/village in the federal state and there was a showcase with a map of the state, surrounded by photos of all signatures which were connected to their location with a thread. I overheard the guy who set that display up asking his friends over and over if it's good and dignified enough to honour his friend. Despite the fact that he increasingly withdrew, this guy was so, so loved by his community.
In the area where I grew up you practically can't go anywhere without seeing his signature. When I take the train to my beloved, I pass by 25 signatures visible from the train alone. On my way from home to my university campus there's 13.
Despite increased police presence in the city center, his crew managed to leave a small memorial painting right at the control hotspot. It reads "EXUDT 4 EVA - DANIEL FOREVER."
EXUDT was caught in the act by the police exactly once. Coincidentally, that night I was also out spraying and because I was drunk I got bold and sprayed a massive heart on the courthouse. Looking back, I think the only reason I didn't get caught was because he got caught two streets away. Thanks for that haha
Someone was looking for this post a while back
"average Hellenistic warlord named three cities after himself" factoid actually just statistical error. the median Hellenistic warlord named one city after himself. Alexander III of Macedon, noted disaster bisexual and conqueror of the Achaemenid Empire, was an outlier and should not be counted.
alright, I’m annoyed with the class that I’m taking. it’s about writing novels, and I thought it would have cool stuff about balancing your narrative and developing themes etc, but instead she spent the first class talking about how every book fits into the Hero’s Journey (the monomyth template). and I was somewhat of a contrarian, and said “can you give us examples of books that don’t fit into this template?” and she said “no. because all books fit.”
but I dunno man, I just finished reading this Korean book where the plot is just the character having a string of hookups and reflecting on them without changing in any way. I don’t know if it’s possible to contort that into the Hero’s Journey.
Even inside the western canon, it doesn't fit very well way more often than people like to admit. Even inside the very stories that Campbell built it off of.
For example: Beowulf does not follow the hero's journey. I have a pet theory that Beowulf is three or four stories that kind of got mashed together since it's a collection of a couple vignettes about this warrior's life and the dragon episode is rather disconnected from Grendel (unless you're John Gardner, who ties it all together in his novel Grendel). Beowulf emerges as a full-blown hero when he enters the narrative, does not have a mentor, does not refuse the call (and rather wholeheartedly embraces it in fact - "Not only am I gonna slay your monster, I'm gonna slay your monster with my ass hanging out to show off"), does not live in the normal world at any point. One could argue he returns with the elixir to his home, given that the later story has him as a king, but the story's not interested in explaining much about how that happened and keeps going after the hero's journey would claim it should end, instead jumping to Beowulf's noble sacrificial death. You really have to squeeze to fit Beowulf into that framework, and by the point where it does, you've lost all semblance of a common structure the monomyth claims to represent. Arguably, the Iliad doesn't it either, given the scope of the story is a lot smaller than some people seem to believe.
Like I get the point that the original post was making about the western canon being so heavy with authors from the US and western Europe and not caring much about works from cultures beyond that, but I feel it's worth noting that even if you grade Campbell's ideas on the most generous possible curve, they don't hold up.
And even if we pretend they did, he never intended them as a writing guide. They were only popularized as one when George Lucas took that structure and adapted it to Star Wars.
And it's always worth mentioning that Maggie Mae Fish did a really good breakdown of Campbell and the Hero's Journey and why it's flawed. It's well worth watching. It's what got me questioning it in the first place.

This was supposed to be just a real quick test on how well I can make "phantom shapes" with the textures, and instead I spent like three days on it, and trying to compromise between subtle and obvious, I ended up with neither. The outline of the "hidden" shape there is not really visible there, but here it is:
