all right guys, let’s have a conversation about linguistic register, Lan Wangji, and I guess Wei Wuxian can come too

(and I do genuinely mean conversation, I’d love to hear other people’s input on this, because I did just write a long-ass post about the subjectivity of interpretation in translations)

So when I started interacting with the fandom and reading people’s fics, I got really confused by the way some folks were writing dialogue for Lan Wangji; he often sounded super awkward, spoke in fragments, and sometimes exclusively in third person. To be fair, all of those are elements of his speech at various times, but like, seeing it in English-language material felt like a really heavy-handed way of rendering it in translation?

I guess when you use third person within the first three episodes of the show, it makes a pretty big impression on the audience

This is not at all intended to be a criticism of people who are 1000% writing and creating wonderful work, which is more than I can say for myself, but I want to poke and prod and tease at some linguistic nuance here.

as a welsh person i want you all to accept that W is a vowel because honestly it makes pronouncing acronyms so much easier. wlw becomes ‘ooloo’, wjec becomes ‘oojeck’, love yourselves and stop giving us shit when we tell you welsh has 7 vowels. english actually has 15 vowel sounds but because y’all only use 5 letters you have to rely on a spelling system devised by satan

yeah, we can actually because the spelling is phonetic. meanwhile english folks have placenames like bicester or keighley or beaulieu, which you have to learn the pronunciation for individually because the rules are so inconsistent. i mean people can’t even agree how to pronounce marylebone but sure welsh place names are the weird ones

fun fact: for decades children were beaten for speaking welsh in school, even in areas where english was barely spoken, because the government decided in 1847 that the language made people lazy and immoral

fun fact: welsh orthography is actually easy to read if you take your head out of your arse for one minute and learn our alphabet - just like french, or spanish, or korean, because surprise! languages use different spelling systems that are not based on english. novel, i know - and in the 18th century, travelling schools were able to teach people to read and write welsh in a matter of months, so that wales enjoyed a literate majority, a rare thing in europe at the time

fun fact: the english have been taking the piss out of welsh for years, just like they’ve been doing for irish, and scots gaelic, and cornish, and british sign language, and a hundred and one other languages, because evidently the fact that the whole world isn’t anglophone and monocultured and Still Part Of The Empire is a problem, and something that needs to be corrected

Look, I know The Witcher is trying to be "the next Game of Thrones" and I respect that, but fake-Ciri just addressed Emhyr as "Your Grace" and I thought that was a dumb world-building choice when George R.R. Martin made it, let alone whoever snuck that into the Witcher script. Haven't they addressed sovereigns of the realm as "Your Majesty" before in this series? Am I going to have to go back and look that up? Is there some in-universe reason that Emhyr would be a "Grace" when every other monarch is a "Majesty"? Or is this exactly as dumb as I think it is

I have seen “omg I can’t wait to see Batman on My Adventures with Superman!” and I have seen “fuck Batman, can’t you bitches let Superman have ONE THING for himself?” but I think a Luthor-esque cameo where Bruce Wayne happens to be at an event Team Superman is covering and we get to be like “hey! That’s Batman!” but it’s not a major part of the episode is something we could all get behind.

I have a Notes document called “A Job Done Right.”

It is dedicated to the fanfiction that has not been written, but nevertheless I want to read.  So, you know. “If you want a job done right, you have to do it yourself.”  In this case, it’s just “if you want a job done at all.”  I just wrote a post about how writing multiple sentences in a row is a Herculean undertaking for me, so “A Job Done Right” is full of scraps of dialogue and pithy phrases that become paragraphs only through immense effort. 

This is relevant because the sentence that just occurred to me, “Zagreus has never known when to leave well enough alone,” would be a good fic summary.  It will probably never become a fic.

and I figure the way to get through editing the same sentence over and over until it loses all meaning and actually putting ideas down on paper (or equivalent medium) is practice, because it makes perfect, right?  I mean unconscious perfectionism is the problem in the first place, but “practice might help you overcome paralysis” isn’t an aphorism, yet.
