Campaign 4, Episode 28 - Chasing Shadows
So the revelation about the elves inability to reproduce really shines a very sad light on why Vaelus keeps saying "all of them" when asked who she'd want to return to life, doesn't it?
Now, I just want to say, as your director, I would like to say one quick word and time is of the essence, we need to get this play up on its feet. This is a triumph. The opening show of The Hallowed Round.
Campaign 4, Episode 28 - Chasing Shadows
The entire scene between Hannan and Vaelus was obviously fantastic but I especially loved the line "I think when you love a version of a person that isn't real it makes you hate the version of them that exists in the real." I made a post a few months ago about the elves' relationship with Sylandri being akin to an abusive, controlling parent; Sylandri didn't want children, she wanted - exactly as Hannan said - dolls she could play with in this perfect paradise world she had created, and the whole point of playing with dolls is they do whatever you tell them.
Azune is the best inheritor of Thjazi's legacy not because of any fighting or morals, but because he's the only one who can keep a revolutionary meeting in schedule and not descending into infighting.
Man. Murray's speech in the cold open to Gus about helping people with and without innate magical powers really hit. "But there's great powers in this world, and I've always held a strong belief that it should not be reserved for a single class of people." Working in higher education and watching funding get stripped so that kids lose out on the ability to come to a university and learn unless they come from privilege sucks. I'm with Murray on this one. Those who are willing deserve a chance to learn. Knowledge belongs to everyone, not just the elite. Marisha Ray, the queen that you are.
Azune: Terrified he can't keep up with the lies upon lies any more, having a full-on panic attack, desperately needing someone to tell him he doesn't need to walk into the lion's den any more and he doesn't need to keep lying.
Also Azune: Walks into the lion's den, gets a promotion, a weapon, a level-up, possibly a new family (enforced), and even more to have to lie about.
Welcome to my side of the team.
the goddess of life refusing to allow her creations to create life of their own... forcing them to beg her for the blessing of bodily autonomy
Not gonna lie, I'm kinda glad Demodus called Murray out on the way she's been treating him.
Is he young and inexperienced? Yes. Is he a bit naive/too trusting? Maybe. Is he a Silly Goose? Abso-fucking-lutely.
But he is NOT a fucking idiot, and he’s a full-ass adult. If he’s a grad student, he’s minimum early twenties, maybe mid-twenties. Probably older than Occtis by at least a couple years, and not THAT much younger than Azune, Wick and Julien. Decidedly NOT a child in the way Murray's been treating him.
I especially loved Brennan highlighting how Demodus' experience as a gnome makes him KEENLY aware of how danger surrounds him every day.
He's SMALL - literally, like, in terms of game mechanics. People can and do just pick him up and move him around without even thinking about it. Average-sized people can carry him around without suffering a penalty to their movement speed, which means he's easy to just snatch. He's already been kidnapped once (that we know of).
Murray may be a dwarf, but dwarves still qualify as Medium creatures in DnD. Most people who might try to kidnap her will have to move half their movement speed while they carry her (unless they're classified as Large or bigger creatures). And, while I doubt that this is in anyway Murray's intention (she mostly focuses specifically on Demodus being young rather than small), the relative size difference contributes to a certain ableist undercurrent that runs beneath her treatment of him.
Every day, Demodus has to navigate a world full of people who could (and might) quite literally crush him under their feet. By accident or otherwise. He knows how best to navigate those challenges and how to protect himself in most circumstances. He only slipped up and got in so much trouble this time because an institution he trusted (the Penteveral) advertised a good-paying job offered by the Tachonises that turned out to be a ruse in service to a larger, more nefarious plot. And once he realized exactly what he'd gotten himself into, he split.
Remember, Demodus actually managed to evade the Tachonises entirely! The only a reason he got caught by the Crowkeepers was because he trusted Pimley (another gnome, notably, someone who should have understood and empathized with his everyday struggles) to help him. And Pimley turned around and sold him out.
Demodus knows perfectly well how much danger he's in and how to take it seriously, even if he maintains an air of levity through everything. The humor is a coping mechanism. If he doesn't laugh, he's going to cry. Better to take what joy you can, where you can find it - not just in spite of the horrors, but because of them.
He might be a bit of a clown, but he’s not an idiot, and he's not a child. He's perfectly capable of making serious, informed decisions about his life, and I'm glad he called Murray out for treating him otherwise.
It looks like Wicander is locked in to be at the Schemers Table for the next round, seeing as Yanessa doesn't intend to let him out of her sight.
So, barring any big reveals of Wick's true allegiances (which no one who isn't in on it has working evidence to prove them), I don't think he's got much push to sneak back out of Dol-Makjar and burn his bridges in a way Yanessa cannot fail to clock after his successful lie. And even if Yanessa did let/send Wick out of Dol-Makjar, I think you could only openly send Azune with Wick and Tyranny, which would also be a bit out of left field for a new table arc to be done so immediately when we've already got some big threads to follow, unless it's headed the same way.
However, I would say that Tyranny is not locked for Schemers.
As the proven competent Aspirant demon sister, I could see Yanessa sending Tyranny to "hunt" down Kattigan and/or Teor, tie up those loose ends and/or gather more information about their goals for Yanessa, allowing Tyranny to join whatever table either one is at without too much fuss.
Whether or not Tyranny would want or be willing to take such a job and be separated from Wick remains to be seen. If she doesn't want to help where she's not at Wick's side, I don't think she'd be completely prevented from trying to talk Yanessa into keeping her on task protecting Wicander.
"Flower doll" has a whole new layer of meaning, now that we know Sylandri made the elves infertile. They may have the parts, but they were always meant to be the Shaper's playthings.

Last time we sat together like this... Mm. In Lumière. Mourning our parents. Seems like everytime we're together, it's to grieve. I wish we could have spent more time... in less hopeless contexts.
really need to emphasize how sexy it is that julien is taking notches for every tachonis killed and thaisha just started putting notches on her belt for candescent creed/halovars killed
Thaisha and Hal are making me crazy
They understand each other so easily. Clearly both yearn to stick together, but they know their paths lead in different directions for now. And despite that, the love and support is just a fact of their existences
