On Saturday, February 20, 2016, Frankie was involved in a car accident that left his car completely totaled. Unfortunately, due to an already tight financial situation, Frankie was uninsured at the time of the accident, leaving us with a hefty bill that we will need to cover for both vehicles damaged. All this on top of losing a car and not having a steady job or steady income. We have been struggling financially for a while now and could no longer afford to pay for Frankie’s car insurance since we decided to allocate those funds towards our rent and other bills. Frankie has been struggling to secure a job and had been working with an agency with a very unstable schedule and little pay. Thankfully, he was able to secure a job as a clerk at a local AMPM and is expecting his first paycheck on the 14th of March. The issue now is coming up with rent and bill money until there is a steady flow of income. I (Jackie) no longer have a steady income since I left my full time job to go back to school. I have a very inconsistent flow of income and at this point, we are forced to pick and choose what bills to pay or not pay. To top it all off, our rent was raised beginning March 5th and we do not have any savings to be able to secure another apartment, so are forced to pay a higher rent or lose our home. We are starting this page as a last resort, in order to help us raise funds to cover our expenses of paying our rent and bills, and being able to raise enough to be able to purchase another car for Frankie. We really appreciate any help or sharing of this page. Thank you for your time!
“I was just another black face in the streets and I was almost another dead black male.”
Alex Landau, an African American man, was raised by his adoptive white parents to believe that skin color didn’t matter. But when Alex was pulled over by Denver police officers in 2009, he lost his belief in a color-blind world—and nearly lost his life. In “Traffic Stop,” Alex remembers the night that led him to become an advocate for social justice
(Facebook: StoryCorps)
Well. I’m definitely crying. Part rage, part exhaustion, part terror because the first time I got hemmed up by the police, I thought I was going to die too. I wasn’t beaten, so my experience was nowhere near this traumatic, but I just remember thinking “These white cops have decided I’m guilty and nothing I say will change their mind. I’m either going to jail or into the ground.“ (Y’all already know the story. I got lucky with all this hair and pushed my face against the wall so my hoodie and ballcap would fall off. The guy they were looking for was bald and I had about 18-inches blown-out back then.)
Adoptive white parents, please remember that if you adopt non-white kids, you have to teach them how to survive as non-white Americans. And if you are ill-equipped to do so, find some mentors who can. There are plenty of Black adults in this world who would gladly take your child under their wing to make sure they know that colorblindness stops at the front door. You might just be another child in your family’s household, but you are BLACK once you cross that threshold into the the real world.
I run across kind-hearted “I don’t see color” white folks on a regular basis. Some of them volunteer at the shelter and they try to avoid race when talking to the kids. That’s absolutely not the way you want to go about addressing Black & Brown kids in a shelter in NYC, kids with questions about why they can hop on the 6 train, go 6 or 7 stops south, and be in one of the most expensive zip codes in the country while the schools they go to barely have supplies. The other kind are white acquaintances (I would say friends, but unless you can see race, you can’t really be in my circle like that) who think they’re showing how evolved they are by telling me they don’t see race. I get it. You’re trying get across how you feel everyone is equal, and that’s fine, but the reality of everyone being equal does nothing to affect the perception held by those in power that I am Black before I’m a human being. That perception comes along with centuries of baggage and propaganda that makes my life more at risk when I walk out of my house. I need you to see that and how it affects me on every level, which in turn affects how I move through the world differently than you do.
And white parents with non-white kids need to see that too before they decide to adopt brown babies. It’s more than just trying to connect your kids to a sense of history and culture outside of your purview – it’s making sure your kids know how to keep themselves safe in situations white people never have to think twice about.
