why do closed captions keep pretending english is the only intelligible language? when a character speaks spanish what exactly is forcing your hand to transcribe it as "[speaks foreign language]" rather than "Si"

This intersection of Anglocentric bias + ableism and audism makes my blood boil.

People commonly defend this practise with "But the audience isn't meant to understand!" or "It's inconsequential!", neither of which actually address a) their assumption that the [ideal Anglo] audience wouldn't understand, or, perhaps most crucially in the context of CCs, b) that this is a failure of accessibility. A hearing person who speaks that "foreign" language will know exactly what's being said. A deaf or HoH person – the people CCs are primarily intended for – who speaks or reads that language should therefore have the exact same opportunity to understand. It very much feels to me like an assumption that we deaf and HoH people couldn't possibly understand any language but English, so there's no point in getting those languages transcribed for us. I hope it goes without saying how profoundly audist that sentiment is.

There is also, I think, a profound misunderstanding or ignorance of Deaf culture at play. Which is to say, CCs in English-language media are written with not only the assumption that the audience will be native English speakers, but that all d/Deaf and HoH people speak English as their first language, so all other languages are as supposedly foreign to them as they are for hearing people. But sign languages are their own distinct language. BSL, ASL, ISL, AusLan, NZSL etc ≠ English (and are indeed different from one another), LIS ≠ Italian, JSL ≠ Japanese, and so on. So, if you follow the captioners' logic to its natural extreme, all non-signed dialogue is "foreign" to many d/Deaf and HoH people and should therefore be labelled [speaks foreign language] / [speaks English] / [speaks own language] / etc. – which is, obviously, a terrible idea that perfectly highlights all the biases implicit in closed captioning.

TL;DR: your accessibility feature fails in its function as soon as you fail to transcribe all spoken languages.

I can't write a character without the character having some kind of beef with gender normativity but part of why I made masculine and feminine ideals of the different fantasy cultures very different is hell yeah women in charge, tee hee intentionally and proudly buff women, and I wanted to dress some men up pretty

And this is why they're generally positioned sympathetically even if I need to unpack their culture's potential abuses and homophobia and whatnot as, say, a heroically-portrayed, somewhat idealized, and protagonist-centering matriarchy

I also wanted to explore the inter-cultural pairing potential of two characters each severely not realizing that the other is considered bitterly flaming camp GNC to their respective origin culture, making the frustrated, confused flirting interest like "I am BETTER than wanting someone PROUDLY NORMATIVE who BULLIES me. What are these vibes going down. What am I missing"

this was on one of the Anne Rice writing method reblogs and its so good but i know people will take it the wrong way and i want to post it here to preserve and honor it. because theyre right, her writing IS mid. i really really enjoy her work but she is not particularly good at it. and i think that is the most important aspect of conceptualizing of yourself as a creative producer that is performing non-alienated work: how "good" it turns out to be has nothing to do with 1. how much of it you will sell 2. how much people will enjoy it 3. how MANY people will enjoy it and finally 4. the effort you put into making it. developing skill and taste are DIFFERENT tasks from the actual production. let this inspire you

In Unrealistic Ideal World, as someone who likes being married and is glad to be married, I'd be a current-flavor-of-legal-marriage abolitionist but like contextually under terms of increased rights and protections access that are often gated by marriage status, and afterward, because it would take like 20 years to legally transition everything toward even in ideal circumstances

I don't think some of the benefits of a legal divorce proceeding etc are meaningless lmao

I just think that it's long historically associated with a form of ownership in many cultures in ways that still seriously stress me out, and feel at risk of relapsing when increased rights are still forced to happen within the framework. I've seen cultural enforcement against law and legal rights happen for married and divorcing women due to religious contexts, among 'educated' and 'normal' white people where people like to believe this Doesn't Happen, from the belief of sovereign husband headship and ownership still standing. It's a third of the political and religious stances of the goddamn United States.

And I've seen it culturally pandemically make it harder for women pressured to marry as literal teens to get divorced and get out, to solely enshrine rights to that context

I just also don't think it's my best or most useful hill to die on, or that I'd get very far with it, given the nature of context reasons for me to have some stress and concerns

all the rights that come with marriage you should be able to have without marriage btw. you should be able to designate a person who can visit you in the hospital regardless of your relationship to that person.

People in the notes are saying "You can!" referring just to the hospital visitation part, and sure (depending). But people should have access to ALL of the benefits of marriage without needing to be married.

You should be able to add anyone you want on your health insurance plan.

You should be able to sponsor the visa of anyone you choose to move to your home country.

You should be able to name anyone you choose as the legal-from-birth legal coparent of any child you give birth to.

You should be able to apply for student aid on your own at any age.

And yes, yes, ideally healthcare and college should be free, international migration should be unrestricted, and the entire concept of legal parenthood should be rewritten from the ground up. But right now we're talking about marriage benefits.

This is partly because if I've slept alright my stress hormones will have bottomed out by the time I get up, including epinephrine and norepinephrine

But anymore if I spike them with caffeine I'll just get a massive heart rate jump, get a little paranoid, and have a big emotional crash later, with a bonus of maybe aggravating nerve pain

I think just stressing myself out enough in the morning to spike things does the same lmao or else it's not like I couldn't just stress myself out a selective amount

As it is knowing I'll get physically and emotionally very unpleasant symptoms backlash, both immediately and later, makes me not want to push myself until a lot of the day's escaped me LMAO...I need to be gently re-raising my tolerances

an interesting linguistics find! so I'm reading this text from 1908 and it keeps referencing "hp" in the context of "not being at full hp" "applying your full hp to a task" etc

and I'm like....... okay that is a perfectly normal way to describe energy and reads totally clear to me, but I KNOW you don't mean hit points/health points which is the first place my brain goes, so what are YOU using hp to mean

and it's not explained in-text, which means it was common enough to not warrant explanation to the 1908 audience, so gotta look elsewhere

and I'm absolutely FASCINATED that a commonly used initialism from 1908 now stands for something different AND YET the contextual meaning is still the same to a 21st-century reader
