Survival (if you learn nothing else, memorize the first four)

すみません。－ Excuse me; I’m sorry for the inconvenience (the most important thing for you to know tbh. There is pretty much no wrong time to say 「すみません」)

ありがとうございます。－ Thank you very much. (ditto the above)

日本語分かりません。－ I don’t understand Japanese.

英語を話せますか。－ Do you speak English?

もう一回、お願いします。－ One more time, please.

駅はどこですか。－ Where is the train station?

トイレはどこですか。－ Where is the bathroom?

迷っています。－ I am lost.

助けてください。－ Please help me.

Smalltalk

こんにちは。－ Hello.

はい。－ Yes.

いいえ。－ No.

お名前は何ですか。－ What is your name?

私の名前は….です。－ My name is …

….から来ます。－ I come from (country).

お元気ですか。－ How are you?

元気です。－ I’m good.

….が好きです。－ I like (something).

これが好きです。－ I like this (thing near me).

おいしかったです。－ It was delicious (tell your waitstaff at restaurants).

….に行きたい。－ I want to go (somewhere).

大丈夫です。－ It’s okay (reassurance! You can’t use this as a reply to 「お元気ですか」)

Quick notes

If you hear a 「か」 at the very end of a sentence, there’s a 99.9% chance you’re being asked a question.

Use! Your! Body! Language! If you’re completely stumped in a situation and it’s important,mime! Mime as if your life depended on it! Maybe carry a little notepad and a pen with you so you can draw things if you get in a really tight spot.
