The 12th annual international gender census, collecting information about the language we use to refer to ourselves and each other, is now open until 30th August 2025.
Itâs short and easy, for most participants it takes 5 minutes or less.
After the survey is closed Iâll process the results and publish a spreadsheet of the data and a report summarising the main findings. Then anyone can use them for academic or business purposes, self-advocacy, tracking the popularity of language over time, and just feeling like weâre part of a huge and diverse community.
If you think you might have friends and followers whoâd be interested, please do reblog this blog post, and share the survey URL by email or at AFK social groups or on other social networks. Every share is extremely helpful!
Survey URL: https://survey.gendercensus.com
The survey is open to anyone anywhere who speaks English and feels that the gender binary doesnât fully describe their experience of themselves and their gender(s) or lack thereof.
Alright! Sorry for being so absent today! I was building a tool so you can all check your own names on demand.
I am asking that you not talk about it on Hugging Face. I'm sure word will get there eventually, but I'd like to avoid them accessing this as much as possible. Feel absolutely free to spread around Tumblr.
AO3 search tool is here! Use page 1 to search scraped fics by username. Use page 2 to search by work ID (which you'll need to do if you're looking for an anonymous work).
Or you can use this version, which is strongly recommended if you've published more than about 20 fics on the username you're searching.
If you're unsure which to use:
The first link is better if your entire username is a common word. For example, if you're username is just "bread" then you probably can't search yourself in the second link. The first version is way slower, so I recommend trying the second link first and using the first link as a backup option if the second fails.
The first link contains a page to search by work ID. This is good if you have an anonymous or orphaned fic, since that's not going to appear by searching your username.
The second link is better if you have a LOT of fics. It will give you a count of fics so you don't have to add them up. It will show the top 2,000 work results found.
If you have more than 2,000 published works, first off, I am jealous of your motivation. But second, that won't display right on the public version of the tools. You can send an ask or DM to have me do a custom search for you if you have more than 2,000 total works under 1 username.
You can also ask or DM if your entire username is a common word, because you're likely to get drowned out of the search results in that case. Try the tool first, but if it returns a lot of author results for your search, and YOUR name isn't in the results, ask me! There's a decent chance you're in there, but one of the tool's weak points is searching extremely common words.
In case this post breaches containment: this is a tool that only has access to the work IDs, titles, author names, chapter counts, and hit counts of the scraped fics for this most recent scrape discovered in April 2025. There is no other work data in this tool. This never had the content of your works loaded to it, only info to help you check if your works were scraped. If you need additional metadata, I can search my offline copy for you if you share a work ID number and tell me what data you're looking for. I will never search the full work text for anyone, but I can check things like word counts and tags.
Please come yell if the tool stops working, and I'll fix as fast as I can. Version 1 is slow as hell, but it does load eventually. Give it up to 10 minutes, and if it seems down after that, please alert me via ask! Anons are on if you're shy. Version 2 typically loads results within 1 minute and handles most users well.
On mobile, enable screen rotation and turn your phone sideways. It's a litttttle easier to use like that. It works better if you can use desktop.
Some FAQs below the cut:
"What do I need to do now?": At this time, the main place where this dataset was shared is disabled. As far as I'm aware, you don't need to do anything, but I'll update if I hear otherwise. If you're worried about getting scraped again, locking your fics to users only is NOT a guarantee, but it's a little extra protection. There are methods that can protect you more, but those will come at a cost of hiding your works from more potential readers as well.
"I don't want to know!": This tool is 100% optional. If you don't want to know, simply don't click the link. You are totally welcome to block me if it makes you feel more comfortable.
"Can I see the exact content they scraped?": Nope, not through me. I don't have the time to vet every single person to make sure they are who they say they are, and I don't want to risk giving a scraped copy of your fic to anyone else. If you really want to see this, you can find the info out there still and look it up yourself, but I can't be the one to do it for you.
"Are locked fics safe?": Not safe, but so far, it appears that locked fics were scraped less often than public fics. The only fics I haven't seen scraped as of right now are fics in unrevealed collections, which even logged-in users can't view without permission from the owner.
"My work wasn't a fic. It was an image/video/podfic.": You're safe! All the scrape got was stuff like the tags you used and your title and author name. The work content itself is a blank gap.
"It's slow.": Unfortunately, a 13 million row data dashboard is always going to be on the slow side. I think I've done everything I can to speed it up, but it may still take up to 10 minutes to load. It's faster if you can use desktop, but it should work on your phone too.
"My fic isn't there.": If it was published after March 15th, 2025, that was likely after all of the scraping took place. Otherwise, from what I can tell so far, the scraper's code just... wasn't very good, so most likely, your fic was missed by random chance. I am continuing to look for methods to reduce the chances of a work getting scraped anyway, and I will share on this blog if/when I find something that works.
Thanks to everyone who helped with the cost to host the tool! I appreciate you so so so much. As of this edit, I've received more donations than what I paid to make this tool so you do NOT need to keep sending money. (But I super appreciate everyone who did help fund this! I just wanna make sure we all know it's all paid for now.)

It's Trans Day of Rememberance, time to support your local trans author while they are still alive
I originally put this thread up on blue birb hellsite, but I wanted to make a longer, more nuanced post for Tumblr. TDOR is a heavy day for me, and every time I see the list of names it makes me want to squirrel away and cry. So instead I want to spread around some books by trans authors, to uplift our voices. The books themselves are not necessarily about trans characters (mine is not) but my experience as a trans guy does inform the text, and when I read these other works, I feel a kinship to the author in that regard, however imagined that is.
I'll start, it's me, buy my horrific (seriously, read the content warning) fantasy book about young queers surviving atrocities: SUGAR PEOPLE

Next up: ÎÎŹÎčÎżÏ, by Andromeda Ruins (@andromedaexists). A heavy anti-establishment retelling of the fall of Icarus that leans heavily into the reality of queer folk as outcast and put at risk by the powers that be. I have yet to finish it but the prose really slaps you with its urgency.

Next up: FEMININ GANGE (Feminine gait), by Molly Ăxnevad, a contemporary novel about the trans healthcare system in Norway. It's written in Norwegian (bokmĂ„l) but I really hope to see it translated in English one day because it's such an important piece of literature on the state of our centralised transmedical health system here in norway.

Next up, MAO SIN RAUDE KJOLE (Mao's Red Dress), by Jan Elisabeth Lindvik, (also norwegian, nynorsk) a coming of age novel set in the backdrop of the sixties. It's only really available in Norway, and it's another one I hope to see translated someday, but it's worth knowing about, as it's a seminal novel by a trans activist with so many decades of lived experience, as the country slowly changed its views around trans folk.

Next, we have JACK OF THORNS, Book 1 of INHERITANCE by AK Faulkner, a dark urban fantasy featuring messy queers and LOTS of trauma. I had the pleasure of meeting Faulkner at a con earlier this year, and they have got an awesome thing going with the Inheritance universe. I've been enjoying Jack of Thorns a lot, it does not hold back.
The Inheritance Series Queer Urban Fantasy for Adults Inheritance is an ongoing series best read in order. The books are available at all ma
Next, it's the astounding FRESHWATER by Akwaeke Emezi, a magical contemporary novel about dissociative experiences and trauma, and how they interplay with culture and growing up. A very intense and beautifully written book that isn't afraid to tackle dissociative identities AND gender identity (something those of us who have both often have to mask for fear of being denied treatment).
An extraordinary debut novel, Freshwater explores the sâŠ
AND THEY LIVED... by Stephen Salvatore, a very contemporary YA romance that deals with societal issues around being gay and nonbinary. It's written from the POV of a cringey, hopeful teen, and dances between happily-ever-after romance and a pointed exhumation of incredibly dark things.

If you are an author listed here and you want off this list, just let me know! If you are an author and you want ON this list, feel free to reblog and add your stuff.
Otherwise, go forth and support a trans author today! Connect with our stories, real and imagined. Increase empathy and understanding around the world. Maybe TDOR will be a memorial of the past one day, instead of a memorial of the present day.
I love the way T. Kingfisher/Ursula Vernon offhandedly mentions that her characters are stacked. It's always like, "I have not been able to sleep on my back since I was 14" or "I had to crawl on my stomach and my boobs do NOT accommodate me crawling on my stomach." THAT is how you breast boobily.
So it's taken a HELL OF A LONG TIME, but the new versions of the Inheritance audiobooks are FINALLY available on Audible.
Laurence Riley might be able to see the future, but he can't see a way to fix his messed-up life. He can't control anythingânot his supernatural talents, not his drug addiction, and not his violent ex-boyfriend. Laurence needs help, and he knows it.
A lifelong pagan, he turns to his god...and he gets Jack. Jack can help Laurence tame his powers and take control of his life. But it comes at a price: Laurence will need to keep him fed with regular offerings of sex. For the old Laurence, that would've been a pleasure. Problem is, Laurence has met Quentin.
Quentin is devastatingly handsome, way out of Laurence's league (like British nobility levels of out-of-his-league), and unbearably chaste. If that werenât enough to keep Laurence away, Quentin's wild telekinesis is even more uncontrollable than Laurence's precognition. But Laurence doesn't want anyone else, and Jack is getting hungry.
Then Laurence foresees a glimpse of Jack's true plan. It will leave a trail of death across San Diego--and Laurence has been helping him do it. The past has taught him that the future can't be changed. But if Laurence and Quentin can't stop Jack, there won't be any future at all.
Check out this great listen on Audible.com. Laurence Riley might be able to see the future, but he can't see a way to fix his messed-up life
hiya! I figured id make an informational post about the little things ive noticed about being on testosterone that I found werenât talked about a lot when I was starting my transition and even before when I was doing my research. I think that trans sexual health is an extremely important part of trans peoples lives (and that doesnt necessarily mean sex) seeing as the physical changes that happen during transition are often foreign to us. Sexual health keeps us healthy and comfortable in our bodies, so do your best to stay attentive to your bodyâs changes! As always, consult your doctor if you feel the need to. These are only tips ive learned from transitioning myself and from my doctor when I asked about certain things.
Hey this isnât necessarily something for HRT. But rather for top surgery for those considering it, most every surgeon and endocrinologist Iâve met (save for the ones Iâm working with currently) doesnât mention this and trans dudes who have gone through top surgery sometimes donât even know about it, but your tiđ ±ïžđ ±ïžies? They make hormones. Lots of them. When you get top surgery youâre removing a primary maker of hormones from your body and itâll throw you through a loop, and for anywhere from a few days to a couple months after the surgery your hormones are gonna be WACK. This will usually cause a post-surgery depression that a lot of trans men sometimes confuse with regret for taking this step in their transition and itâll throw them into an identity crisis, so for those planning on taking that step, just remember that weird ass sadness youâre gonna feel is just your hormones being like âhey wHAT the FUCKâ and you made the right decision for you!!
Can confirm that bottom growth is a real and painful thing. If youâre the kind of person who wears skinny jeans regularly (looking at u fashionable goth/punk trans ppl), hereâs a tip for your first few months of T: donât.
Bottom growth will be overly sensitive and stick out of the hood more than usual, and anytime the inside of ur jeans rubs against it it will a) hurt and b) make u horny.
This can be a problem in general, but especially if u have bottom dysphoria and being reminded of ur junk can make u dysphoric, and/or if ur ace like me and being horny can be a very confusing and annoying experience (I know this is not every aces experience but I had never really had a sex drive or arousal before T and it was very distressing at first. Still ace tho)
Oh also: microdosing can be great for slowing changes and letting ur body adapt more gradually (It can be very helpful for more gradual and natural sounding voice changes), however, it will not let you avoid certain changes entirely. Microdosing will not prevent bottom growth from happening, or any other changes you may want to avoid. Unfortunately what changes you get are genetic and there is no way to pick and chose which you get. A lower dose of T can make it go more slowly to help you get used to it more gradually or so that if there are changes you really want to avoid you can try and stop before those advance too far, but it canât prevent changes from happening entirely, certainly not specific ones. And certainly not bottom growth, which is one of the first changes to start and one of the least reversible.
(I donât say this because I think that was what op was trying to say abt microdosing at all btw, Iâm just trying to clarify because I remember when I started T and was researching low dose T, I saw some people on online forums hoping it would allow them to avoid bottom growth for example, and it wonât, so I wanted to clear that up)
Also re: top surgery, the first time I saw my chest post-op my brain flipped and I got so dizzy I nearly passed out. This is also relatively normal and okay. I think my brain just kind of freaked out seeing my body so different from what we were used to and also oh yeah with a big scar running across it. Its okay, that doesnât mean you regret it either. I think sometimes ur brain just needs a minute to catch up and realize âoh wait this isnât a traumatic injury this is what my chest is supposed to look likeâ. Once I had seen my chest a few times and let my brain get used to it I was absolutely thrilled and loved it (and still do). I also had a panic attack the night before my surgery because I was afraid of the anesthesia. Again, doesnt mean I made the wrong decision.
I think a lot of trans ppl donât know that surgery can just be an emotionally intense experience, and yeah can also mess with ur hormones a bit (another consequence of both hormonal stuff and the stress of surgery is I got really bad acne for awhile after surgery) and so you might feel all kinds of weird or stressed directly before or after. Itâs okay. Make sure u have supportive ppl around u to take care of u, and wait until ur body has had a bit of time to heal and renormalize before u start panicing over if u made the right choice or not. Youâll probably be sleeping for most of the first week anyway. Give ur body and ur nerves a break for a bit.
I learned so very much from this. Iâve seen posts talking about MtF transition and the hormone weirdness that causes, but this is the first FtM one Iâve seen.
another day another post claiming to give information about transness in history that literally only brings up transfeminine people. can we please stop using "trans" to mean "only transfems because i either can't be bothered to research transmascs & others or don't think it's important to point out the absence of information on transmascs & others"
Part of me always wonders if the person just isn't curating their own experience as well as they should be when I see posts like this (in general, not about transmascs specifically) (or maybe I'm the weird one and just have a non-standard experience). Like, about this post specifically, I see more posts like the above than I do posts like the ones they complain about, while also seeing a good about of the posts they are saying aren't being made. Maybe you just need to follow better people, ya know?
It strikes me along the same lines that people who complain "that the MCU are the only movies that exist" and it's like, stop spending all your time focused on the thing you hate and maybe you'll notice that there are other things in the world that you just weren't looking for because you were too busy talking about what you hate.
I mean, I absolutely am aware that posts out there like the ones I want DO exist. The post that prompted this wasn't even by someone I was following, it was a post on Instagram about trans Muslim historyâ which I was very excited about, but was disappointed by because while it gave important information on transfems, it did not even mention transmasculinity despite claiming to be about general trans history.
This isn't even just a Postingâą problem. If you look up studies on trans people with HIV for example, the overwhelming majority is focused on trans women, even if the study also includes men who have sex with men. By which they mean cis men, yet don't think that's important to include despite making it a point to respect trans women's identities and talk about transphobia. (& this has real dangerous effects on transmascs, since PrEP isn't advertised to them & little research is done on how effective it is when it comes to vaginal sex). I have seen countless articles talking about how trans people used to be worshipped, only to exclusively talk about the gala and hijra without ever bringing up transmascs even to address their absence, or talk about two-spirits but only those who were MTF. I literally went through and counted the people on the trans history Wikipedia list at one point, and especially in the historical sections, transfems drastically outnumbered transmascs.
I definitely do see posts about transmasc history, but I also specifically follow people who talk about transmasculinity and actively seek out information on transmascs. It's not that these don't exist or are never ever talked about. But like... erasure is one of the only things people agree transmascs consistently suffer from. I've seen plenty of people talk about being in classes where trans people are brought up, only for their teachers to completely ignore transmascs and even justify their absence by arguing that no one cared about transmasculinity, or transmascs simply didn't exist in that part of history. Obviously people's experiences vary, this is not universal to every post, article, class, group, etc. but it's a widespread and systematic issue regardless. There's a reason basically every paper researching transmasc starts out their introduction with "Very little research has been done on transmascs so we barely know anything about their experiences."
Id also like to add that many allys who are very much âconfused but got the spiritâ misgender me as a woman and with she/her when i say I am trans. And when I gently correct them and say I am actually a man who was born a woman*.
They say something along the lines of âthats a thing? I had no idea that was a thing. Good for you! â
Not every time. But I have even had a handful of Drs make this mistake.
I canât lie until I was 15 I kept shoving down the thoughts I was a man, because I had no idea Trans Men existed and I thought I was broken. But Iâd been part of queer spaces since I was 11! I had simply assumed the trans men around me were cis men or butch lesbians. Iâd been aware of trans women and drag and men who liked to dress like women and gnc men. But until I met the first trans man to come out to me. I had 0 clue. Because no one talked to me about them.
Its not a universal experience for all trans men but there are a lot things we could do better.
Also there is a lot to be said for curating your own online experience. But undermining people actual experiences just slows our progress to bridging these gaps. I curate my tumblr experience to be a nice comfy space. But it can be an echo chamber. And you can lose touch with the issues effecting people everyday online AND irl. I keep my tumblr comfy and safe but other sites and social media and irl I expose myself to alternative views and discussions.
And yes complaining doesnât seem to do much of anything. But itâs how we start fixing things.
And as long as we donât devalue the need for conversations and studyâs about trans womenâs experience I donât see the harm in posts like this.

Notes: A very late gift fic for @captofthesswolfstar
Excerpt:
Sirius was in the kitchen when he heard the front door open and close behind tired footsteps. Heâd already filled the kettle, knowing that his husband would soon be home, so he lit the stove and pulled a couple of cups out of the cupboard.
âTea or coffee, love?â he called through, spooning some coffee grounds into a mug for himself. If Remus chose coffee, Sirius knew he wouldnât see him behind a pile of marking all night. Whereas tea meant cuddles on the sofa and usually early to bed, but not necessarily early to sleep. Sirius waited, one hand on the tea caddy, but there was no reply. Something was off.
âRemus?â Sirius stepped towards the kitchen door, but he didnât get far before Remus entered and Siriusâs suspicions were instantly confirmed. Usually, Remusâs shoulders would sag tiredly, his expression soft and weary when he arrived home from work, but not today.
âAlright, baby?â Remus said quietly, voice low and rough.
