Or policies that have been in the works since Adams or de Blasio
A good rule of thumb is: if good shit happens in their first year in office, it wasn't their work. Unless, say, they used to work closely with the former office-holder.
Breaking things can happen quickly, as Trump proves (or the so-called Moderates and their bloc, in my own country). Actual reform that makes things better? Takes years of opinion-building and coalition-building and reading reports and doing trial runs where possible. And the more it aligns with progressive goals the harder it is to get it through.

for everyone in the notes lamenting that this guy is poisonous: they are not! they're just pretty :) since they're a glass frog, their major defense mechanism is being translucent and hiding their blood while they sleep so they look extra translucent and blend in with leaves <3
they put ~90% of their red blood cells in their livers while they sleep :) so they look extra translucent and leafish

The latest edition is dedicated to the proposition that Jews can never fully belong, that they are always visitors to society but never at home.
just want to bold, highlight, and underscore that this is ancient Jew hatred and foundational to Nazism, and now apparently the view widely embraced by mainstream publications like New York Magazine.

We underestimate that a lot of leftists don't understand the difference between the primary electorate and the general electorate.
Like, they straight up think it's the same pool of voters.
Since this is Baby's First Competitive Election, I'll explain:
In the primary election, your voters are either all registered Democrats (closed primary) or voters who habitually lean Democratic (open primary). You'll sometimes get a Republican voting Democratic in an open primary just to ratfuck, but not by huge margins. Primary voters are much more engaged and politically aware than the general electorate.
The general electorate is all registered American voters. It is much more conservative than the primary electorate because you're trying to build on your Democratic base and capture Independent voters. No Independent voter is more to the left than the typical Democratic voter. Your Democratic base is your ceiling. If your ceiling doesn't outnumber Republican voters, you have to get Independent voters or you will lose. More Independent voters currently think the Democrats are too far left compared to those who think the Republicans are too far right. The median Independent voter has political beliefs that cannot be neatly put into boxes because they're not politically engaged and usually just go by vibes.
The average Independent voter is the kind of person who probably voted for Gary Johnson because they thought Trump was a disgrace, but couldn't stomach voting for Clinton. If you can't win over those people, your campaign is DEAD.
Much as they may deny it, these bozos are clearly all trying to emulate Obama. Barack Obama's win in 2008 was a fluke, and I don't think leftists realize that. I was a teenager and had a front-row seat to how bad shit was, although I didn't understand it all at the time (I have since read research about his campaign and he was underwater before key endorsements). George W. Bush was considered a national disgrace. "Fannie Mae" and "Freddie Mac" were household names, the housing bubble was bursting, and we were on the brink of the Great Recession. And EVEN SO, Hillary Clinton had so much support that he could have lost the primary. I know this because I helped campaign for him the summer and fall of 2008, and someone I cold-called said she was never voting for him after he "did Hillary like that," and she hoped I wasn't expecting to "give him no money." EVEN SO, we were all terrified that McCain might win, and before the crash in Fall 2008, he looked like he had a fighting chance.
My dad was working with rural individuals in a neighboring county that year. He told me, not too long before the election, that someone he talked to told him Obama was a "[N-word]," but they were voting for him because of the economy. He was a populist hero ONLY in the eyes of young Democrats because he seemed like one of us. The rest of the country saw him as their last hope to pull them out of an economic hole after Dubya crashed the Clinton surplus into the ground and put us in a pointless war. And when he couldn't singlehandedly do that, they turned on him. There are states that went blue on Election Night 2008, but haven't voted for a Democratic presidential candidate since. (No one thinks of Indiana as anything other than a red state anymore.)
The ACA? Obama's triumphant piece of legislature, the crown jewel of his political career, the law that ended his supermajority, the thing any leftist would cry to be able to pass? It lost him Congress in the midterms. "Why didn't he codify Roe into law?" He couldn't. The supermajority only passed the ACA because all of the Dems agreed with it, and not all of them would support blanket nationwide legalization of late-term abortions. "He didn't codify gay rights into law -" HIS SUPREME COURT STRUCK DOWN THAT PART OF THE DEFENSE OF MARRIAGE ACT WHEN HE WAS A LAME DUCK. THAT IS WHY THE SUPREME COURT IS IMPORTANT. I was in my twenties and openly bisexual, with a girlfriend. The absolute infants screaming about neoliberalism today were in elementary or middle school. They have no idea how good they have it, because not even Trump has been able to resurrect DOMA.
And here's the thing. Even if Obama really had been a populist hero, a living avatar of hope and change, every politician has to compromise. The much-vaunted El Sayed is already softening his stances, just like I thought he would. Hong backed off her previous statements (and no doubt would have done so even more if she won), and it wasn't enough to get her elected. Troy Jackson is white and he's going to lose because he's a pugilistic moron who's Groping Platner's bestie, but even he will probably be conciliatory about his positions closer to the election.
Use your brains, people, unless they rotted out of your head from tankie bullshit years ago. And if they did, go shamble around with the other zombies and let adults make policy.
As someone whose first presidential election was 2008, it pisses me off when these leftist clowns keep saying their joker candidates are "the new Obama" (who they hate anyway, but boy do they really want a White Obama). There will never be another Obama, and certainly not from that end of the tent.
Canadian bilingual packaging is fun because you get to see how various slightly odd idioms end up being translated by people who don't give a shit. I just saw a tub of double chocolate chip ice cream where the English label says "death by chocolate", but the French translates literally as "chocolate until death", which has a somewhat different vibe.
#there are so many cases i see when the english packaging has a pun for a tagline #and then the french is just a poor translation EVEN THOUGH an equivalent pun can be made (via @souplover13)
Occasionally it's the other way 'round, though, and the French is clearly the original pun. There's a brand of cheese sticks at the local co-op where the English tagline on the packaging is "cheesetastic!", but the French is "fromidable", which is so much better it's faintly offensive.
My personal favorite genre is when I involuntarily think, "Who in G_d's Name would eat something called that?!?" while dropping it into my cart.

Kestrel-dad not sure how to dad but he’s trying his best.
Dad loves you and feeds you. But he is also dumb and feeds you a wonderfully done wagyu steak. You are 3 days old.
Okay, but check out this video from mid-May 2022 of a Kestrel Dad who just kept piling up voles and mice beside his babies when the mom was injured/killed/mia’d by owls…but then watched one of his babies just swallow a lizard and went “OH. I can feed them small food!” and learned to tear it apart!
EDIT: There’s a not-zero percent chance that this could be the same dad???????? The source is the same–Robert E Fuller–but they could be different birds.
UPDATE: Not only has Mister Kes learned to feed his chicks all on his own…
….the three chicks who were taken out of the nest for intensive care after the mom disappeared were put back in, and he just started feeding them, too.
He’s a single father of six who does not possess the instincts to feed even one of his offspring, but he learned and adopted that behavior without difficulty and is now hunting and providing for six kids all on his own.
Happy father’s day to the Krestel single dad of 6 Who is doing a wonderful job
Shout out to these chicks who have never seen a hand before.

so i mentioned it in the tags of this post but i want to elaborate on this line in particular:
because rachel reid uses ‘bitchy’ or ‘bitchiness’ as a descriptor of shane’s behaviour in the long game, both by shane himself and ilya. what i find bizarre about it — considering that it is a derogatory gendered term — is that it is always used to imply shane is being unreasonable. shane is tone policing himself, even though his response to this situation (ilya telling him that he’s now close with troy barrett, someone shane knows as outwardly homophobic) is logical, and predicated on ilya’s repeated failure to communicate. ilya replies ‘i might be busy having sex with troy’ and then hangs up. despite his tone, despite what he says, he is only described as speaking ‘tightly,’ rather than ‘bitchily.’
to be clear, ilya and shane are both men, but ilya’s behaviour is never described this way, even when he also acts petty, unkind, or bitchy. as another example:
ilya pokes fun at shane’s diet, even after shane tells him to stop. shane loses his patience and reacts to something ilya started, but shane’s behaviour is what is described as bitchy, not ilya’s. shane is reacting unreasonably.
in the same scene — shane describes himself as an absolute bitch. shane is acting unreasonably. and again:
why is shane described this way? or more specifically — why is shane the only one described this way in the book? ilya is jealous of shane interacting with a reporter in a professional setting and shoots a puck at them from behind glass, something shane describes as humiliating, but reid doesn’t describe this action as bitchiness. ilya antagonises shane, but shane responding is what is considered bitchy.
like i said, we cannot extricate ‘bitch’ from its origin as a gendered pejorative, but we also cannot ignore that it is racialised — reid exclusively uses it to describe the gay asian character (who is also a bottom) responding to antagonism. does that make sense? why are you using this particular language to deride shane’s actions in this way, and why is it always utilised in scenes where ilya is an instigator? not to get heteronormative about it, but this dynamic feels like a reflection of the happy husband / nagging bitch wife dynamic. it is that deep.
it is important to consider the language we use to tell a story. reid’s depiction of shane is not magically unaffected by her own, obvious biases around race and sexuality. the fetishisation of his race, his feminisation, her use of ableist language all informs how she chooses to have him react and, in turn, how she chooses to describe his reaction. this is not meaningful commentary about shane’s understanding of gender or his own queerness or his struggle to find community in a toxically masculine environment. he is not calling himself a bitch as an interrogation of shane’s role as a professional athlete intersecting with his sexuality, or even how shane personally views women, it is more indicative of how reid views women. she codifies that shane and ilya fulfil gendered stereotypes in their relationship. ilya is tall and masculine and shane small and hairless. ilya is intelligent and shane is not. ilya is right and shane is wrong. ilya is a cocky asshole and shane is a bitch.
