The original Savage Land story was her Realization Moment, and I'll always believe that
Might I ask how? I'm genuinely curious.
Absolutely! (I hope I'm doing this right; please forgive me - I was born in the late 20th century!)
So, to give a little context, prior to the Savage Land story, Rogue was cycling between her persona and Carol Danvers' after she suffered a [TW: SA] sexual assault while depowered in Genosha. (Uncanny X-Men Volume 1 Issue 236)
After they get out, they deal with the Inferno immediately after. Then a few battles go by, and in Uncanny X-Men Volume 1 Issue 246 the X-Men battle a tough new enemy. The combined Mastermold and Nimrod from Rachel Summer's Days of Future's Past reality that came after her (Please, don't worry about this for now, let's go with it) into a really tough bad guy. Said bad guy also kills Senator Robert Kelly's wife, Sharon, which makes him turn anti-mutant and lean into making the Sentinel and programs that will become Nimrod, thereby basically ensuring more tragedy.
Anyway, Rogue sacrifices herself in issue 247 of the same series, to protect the team and stop the bad guy. The bad guy also decides it must self-destruct to take the mutants and itself out (reasoning itself is a mutant). She persuades Dazzler, her once enemy, now ally, to throw the crystal holding the Siege Perilous, while the X-Men push her and the Mastermold/Nimrod gestalt through. So there's your background; Rogue sacrificed herself for her friends and for the world, over and over. That's my girl!
So, we don't see Rogue again until Uncanny X-Men (Volume 1) issue 269:
Rogue, falling through the Siege Perilous didn't die, but was judged by the Siege. And the Siege decided she deserved life for her deeds and sins, and returned her to this reality. She escapes a perilous situation by the interruption of a Ms. Marvel who wants to talk to her. But Rogue rabbits, and borrows Gateway's powers to teleport away. She teleports wildly, blindly, and into the Savage Land.
The power fades, and she can't get herself out. She's with only her baseline powers, in a land time forgot, with very few human habitations. She's alone for the first time. The narration tells you that story on my favorite page, the page that made me realize Rogue herself knew that she was more than a flying brick. Rogue knew she could handle the world on her own if she had to. She survives and thrives in a jungle that kills most people who wander into it. How could you not root for her?
I blocked the panels above and their dialogue out. Basically the other story happening is the Ms. Marvel lands on Muir Island and falls under The Shadow King's mental command. The (Now Evil) Ms. Marvel seeks Rogue out for other reasons, and...check it out! It's a good story! :)
Yes, this was my bisexual awakening issue, but the story drew me in. Rogue had always been my favorite, and it was so sad when she was dead for the 10 or so months she wasn't around. But to see her back? And living life on her own terms, making the most of a potentially bad situation? I loved it. It made me believe that maybe I could get through things too, if this fictional character could make me believe for a second that they triumphed, too.
Thanks for asking! Sorry I took so long to respond, I have a long commute. I hope this gives you a good understanding of my perspective! :)

[ID: An AO3 author’s note reading, “Sorry for vanishing, I did a little too much research on cults an coercive control for Damian’s arc, and then realized I was raised in a cult, and THEN I ran away to a fishing town cabin on the other side of the country and had to start learning to be a person in the real world. I also forgot how to write. But I’m learning again, so I’m back now! Have some more.” The “I” in “I was raised in a cult” is emphasized by sparking emojis, and the note is ended with heart emojis. /end ID]
Aaaand THIS is one of the many reasons why it’s not only not a bad thing to portray dark subject matter, but EXTREMELY IMPORTANT to do so!! You can learn a lot when writing, and others can learn a lot when reading! This can save lives, dudes.
I am so proud of the author though. That took multiple kinds of courage at once. Good job, author.
Hi! I’m the original author from ao3!
I want to thank everyone for such hilarious and kind additions/replies/tags on this post, they’ve been so amazing to read. They’ve meant more to me than you guys know. ❤️
I also want to add some information for anyone who wants to know more about recognizing the signs that you might be in a high control group.
High control groups can be small or large, religious or not, clubs, schools, online servers, friend groups, etc.
No human is invulnerable because we all have brains and emotions that can be played like a fiddle. Knowing the red flags can help us all keep ourselves safer!

Crisis Text Line (highly recommend, especially if you’re not in a safe place to discuss things on the phone)
Please always protect yourself as best you can and never be afraid to reach out for help—even if you’re just wondering, even if you’re not sure about something.
No safe group or person will EVER be mad at you for being cautious and taking things slow, or for changing your mind at ANY point. You’re the one who gets to decide whether you join or stay with a group, no matter what they threaten or love-bomb you with.
If you’re not safe, there’s help.
If you feel trapped, there’s help.
If people are being actively hurt, good people want to listen, understand, and help.
We all deserve freedom. I’m grateful every morning I wake up that I get to live it now, even though it’s hard and I have a long way to go. Thank you for walking this journey with me, for one brief moment or for years, and helping me—and others like me—not be alone.
Take care, stay safe, and happy fanfiction reading!

I am truly astounded by the capability of this fandom to be so toxic it's one upping multiple fandoms I've been in that I never thought could be topped for toxicity.
First of all, no one willingly announced Supriya leaving, it was a spoiler through an unknown source. Secondly, as much as some people may not like it, we do not know how or why this has happened and if it's a story decision yet. This is a show that works in shifts, she might simply gone for season 3 and might come back if there's a season 4. Thirdly, the writing cast is incredibly diverse and even though I've seen some people say "but there's three white men in control", the world is not black and white and people are not evil. Writing for a show is incredibly complex, and just because a side character has been written out in a way you don't like does not mean there's a grand conspiracy to get rid of all of the WOC. Feel free to criticise the quality of the writing when the season is finished, but for now, people are being nuts. Also, anyone bringing up Collins as another WOC being written off, her character had a very valid reason to leave. The Pitt is a revolving door of staff for anyone who isn't an attending.
The antisemitism and pure vitriol being spouted towards Noah Wyle is truly disgusting, and some of you need to take a course on empathy, y'know, that thing that you guys say Robby lacks so much of. Some people in this fandom don't have any of it themselves and yet still feel they can accuse Robby of having none. Also, Noah is not jealous of Shawn Hatosy and there's no grand plot to get rid of Supriya because of Noah's ego. Robby's the main character, you muppets. This is the Robby show. Of course he's going to have more screen time than SIDE CHARACTERS.
I can't believe I ranted this much but I have been seeing some truly mind blowing stuff this week and had to let it out in one post. Fantastic content to talk about in my university classes, though!! Observations in fandom make great talking points in humanities classes!!

“Erik would hate it if he had a human kids because he hates all humans”
Erik had a human family, wife and daughter that he loved and tragically lost
He wouldn’t care if his child was human or mutant, as long as they were safe
mythbusters was so good because it wasn't a killjoy show. they didn't just say "see, it doesn't work" and leave it there
whenever they find that the stunt doesn't work as portrayed in the movie, they immediately ask "what would it take to make this happen?"
“we know it takes this amount of explosives to work, but what if we doubled it anyway?”
Some myths I'll always remember:
* Are elephants scared of mice? (They only did that because they were in Africa and had access to elephants.)
* Will a bull run amok in a china shop?
* Is it better to run zig-zag or straight when chased by an alligator?
I love these because NONE of them turned out the way they expected. They went into all three with pre-conceived ideas of how it would go, and each time they "failed." Elephants WILL cower from mice. A bull moves very gingerly through a china shop. It doesn't matter how you run because ALLIGATORS WON'T CHASE YOU.
And each time, they reacted with just... pure glee. "Holy shit, we were wrong! Oh my god! This is great! We were so wrong!"
And that, to me, is what science is. Being excited about being wrong because either way it's information.
look. i don’t think my stretch marks are beautiful. i don’t think they’re tiger stripes or natural tattooos. i don’t think my acne is beautiful. i don’t think the bags under my eyes are beautiful. i just think they’re human. and i don’t think i have to be beautiful all of the time in order to be accepted and loved and sucessful. i don’t think every small detail of my outer appearence needs to be translated into prettiness.
fun fact: this POV is actually called “body neutrality” and it’s SO MUCH more accessible/realistic for a lot of people. it’s based on the idea that the way we look is the least interesting/important thing about who we are, and that our bodies are worthy of respect regardless if they fit the mold of the current beauty ideals.
