listen. i don't know who you're writing your alt text for but i am writing mine for human beings. the kinds of human beings who are so determined to be on tumblr that they are on here using a screen reader even though everything about this website renders it unbelievably hostile to anyone who can't look at images for whatever reason. if looking at an image makes you feel slapped upside the head and my alt text does not successfully do the same, i have failed. if matt mullenweg went on a bender and decided to delete all images tomorrow so that all of my posts were left with nothing but the alt text, and they were not exactly as funny or impactful, i have failed. i do not care if an AI can parse an image out of my description, i care if my posts are enjoyable to listen to coming out of a robot that can only successfully read numbers like half the time. it is fine if you take a different stance on alt text than i do, but please understand that this is a decision i have made and that i am doing this on purpose.

to the people saying "these demonstrations mean nothing without direct action": there is so much direct action ongoing. it turns out that driving to the store to pick up groceries for your neighbors who are sheltering in place makes for significantly worse photos and news coverage. moreover, it endangers them. at least at a protest, you can be reasonably confident the people there WANT to be seen. (It's still extremely bad practice and dangerous to take pictures of protestors without permission and fully deidentifying them!)

if you are helping someone vulnerable, you don't. fucking. televise it. you also don't go to ICE and let them learn who you are to follow you home, or to the people you are trying to help.

there are a lot of examples of this kind of mutual aid ongoing, with a large amount of coordination between local and hyperlocal groups, businesses, individuals, charities, legal defense teams, people who are on the frontlines, people who need support, paramedics, and people who are behind the scenes. it is quiet work and it is necessary work. and that work is going on, so, so strongly. forgive us if it's not as gratifying as a civil war or as dramatic as the protests that are still ongoing. you will hopefully never see video footage from this side of a revolution, but we are protecting our own.
