A criticism I do have to have for Robin Hobb is that she loves pairing young women with men who are older than them in quite a significant way. I get that a big part of it is grounding the setting in a world pre-modern medicine where having children early gives you the best chance of success so it would make sense for women to marry young but not necessarily the men. And that point is bolstered by the fact that Rain Wild Trader boys also are expected to marry as teenagers because their people die young. It’s also a mainstay trope of medieval-esque fantasy.

But it does feel a bit weird, 6 books in, that the downsides of this dynamic aren’t really explored… at all? And the majority of these relationships are treated as regular romance? Like Malta is 14 and Reyn is 19/20? And even in-universe Malta’s mother is like “hmm she is a bit young” and a huge part of Malta’s story is about her maturing to become a woman. So it feels weird that—in a story about exploitation of women and girls— 14 yr old Malta gets paired with a grown man. Like he’s 20. But the thing is he ACTS like a teenager. So I don’t know why she didn’t make him, like, 17/18 (especially when he is from a society where it is normal for boys to marry as teenagers!!!)

I thought she was going to go into it a bit back during Farseer Trilogy with Kettricken being 18/19 in comparison to her 30 something yr old husband. Like maybe this isn’t the healthiest dynamic, especially when she is coming from a foreign country with a completely different culture? And that, perhaps, their age, maturity, and cultural gap would cause problems in their relationship buuut no. No this was a good arranged marriage and they loved each other very much.

Meanwhile the reverse just isn’t happening. Wintrow is presented as young in a way that Malta isn’t by the end of the story despite him being OLDER than her. He’s too young for Etta’s tastes (though it’s implied that may change as he gets older and they may end up being a couple). So I highly suspect that this is Robin Hobb’s own biases and tastes coming in with regard to boys and girls. Like “girls mature into women far before boys mature into men” so a girl has the maturity to be with a much older man and the reverse is untrue. She is clearly uninterested in writing teenage boys as romantic interests for her teenage girl characters. The only teenage boy to get it with a teenage girl so far is Fitz, the POV character and, not only is he written as a bad boyfriend, he straight up loses the girl to THE MAN WHO RAISED HIM (although I’m not clear on what Molly’s actual age was by the time she got with Burrich).

I’m curious to see if she does get into this a little bit with later books.

Ok so Robin Hobb apparently married her own husband (a mariner, of course) when she was 18. It all makes sense now. If her husband isn’t hairy, dark haired (at least when he was younger), and broad shouldered I’ll eat my own shoe.
