Jeremy approaches Jean, his voice thick with excitement.
"I asked Kevin to tell me about French history."
Jean sets aside his cookbook to look at Jeremy gravely.
"You… Why would you do that?"
Jeremy shrugs.
"I want to know everything about your culture, and Kevin studies history. I can't think of anything better."
Jean ignores his racing heart to focus on what Jeremy is telling him.
"Thanks, but you don't know what you've done."
Jeremy's phone rings with the hysterical bark/laugh of a fox. Jeremy looks at Jean, his eyes sparkling, to answer the call.
"Hello, Kevin!" Jeremy replies. Jean notices for the first time the notebook and pen Jeremy has laid out on the table for taking notes. He finds it absolutely adorable.
Jean can't watch this.
"I can't bear to witness this torture. I promise I'll honor your memory."
Jeremy laughs as Jean gets Jab ready for a walk. Before going to bed that night, Jean makes Jeremy a light dinner and coffee, knowing what's coming. Jeremy stays on his phone as Jean falls asleep.
When Jean wakes up the next day and goes to make breakfast, Jeremy is still sitting at the table with his phone in his hand.
Jean brings the breakfast to the table. He asks,
"How's it going?"
Jeremy doesn't even blink, his eyes red and swollen.
"…We haven't even gotten to the part where they chop off heads."
And then he bursts into tears.
