as funny as the miku vs ai generated music stuff is, i hate that people are even comparing the two. miku as a character is fictional yes and her voice is technically synthetic, but vocaloid is a program, used by REAL people, and it goes beyond that. REAL people come up with and write/compose the songs, real people spend real time crafting music and put in countless hours making miku's singing sound and feel real. saying vocaloid artists are the same as "ai artists" is a huge insult. you're taking away all the real musical artistry that goes in to songs made through vocaloid. and that's just the music side!! i can't even imagine just how many people and hours go into making miku come alive through animation. we all joke about miku being real, because in a way she is. and it's because of all the real artists out there that make her feel thay way! nothing ai ever does will come anywhere near that!!

like even sitting in an office for eight hours a day isn’t particularly pleasant (or healthy, as we are beginning to see) but when we’re talking about doing *actual work* for that same amount time it gets pretty fucking brutal

doing literally *anything* (even leisure activities) for eight hours straight tends to be less than enjoyable but when we’re talking about things like construction, landscaping, factory work, and hell, even foodservice and retail, eight hours is a fucking ETERNITY

this was being worked towards by leftist labor unions way back in the day after the time of FDRs new deal. people in the 40s and 50s were already starting to realize that we no longer actually needed an 8 hour work day or even a 5 day work week.

even with the comparatively primitive factory tech of the time we were already creating a huge amount of excess production back then and companies were making massive amounts of profit. So it already stood to reason that companies should either let their employees work less and thus each employee could work a shorter shift without lowering the yearly compensation of each employee, or in cases where businesses provide an active service they would shorten the shift but hire more people to cover the necessary operating time. but of course that would mean less money for people at the top so companies fought back hard and we ended up with nixon’s bullshit and so on and now its considered the norm for us to spend the vast majority of our lives doing work that really just amounts to waste.

For the summer, I’m currently working a 3-4 hr/day, 4 day/wk job, and let me tell you if I could survive financially like this long term I would keep this schedule forever. If we made this the norm and made it a livable salary, I genuinely don’t think we would ever have the problem of “but no one wants to wooork” again.

My job is hard. People burn out and quit constantly when doing it full time. But when you work a four hour day, you can go home and rest. You can do housework and keep up with hobbies. You can nap. You can run errands. You can get a full night’s sleep.

There are hard fields of work that are always going to be necessary, but it’s amazing how much easier a hard job is when you have recuperation time. Just saying.

This was an enormous fuck up. A fuck up of monumental proportions. And the medical community refused to listen.

Linsey Marr, the aerosol scientist who led the team responsible for debunking the bullshit medical beliefs around the 5 Micron Myth, tried to prove this back in 2011. A DECADE ago. Medical journals wouldn't publish her paper, a paper that would have drastically changed the way scientist understand influenza transmission (major news!), because this myth was so ingrained as Absolute Irrefutable Proof. (Her study was eventually published in a very small journal and largely ignored.)

This article is absolutely worth reading. I got angrier and angrier with every paragraphs. The medical community (especially the WHO) is so incredibly resistant to challenging old beliefs and assumptions, even when they don't know where these beliefs come from. And the way that medical research and studies build on each other like a stack of cards meant that it took this small group of researchers years just to track down where the misinformation came from. Which they had to do to debunk it, despite the fact they had already disproved it through observation and study. The way the medical community canonizes some "facts" and dismisses others (often based on who is saying them, not in the quality of the research), and then passes that misinformation on as biblical truth, is extremely fucked up. Combating this will require a major and purposeful cultural shift within medical education communities.

I find it suspicious that you never see posts along the lines of "cishet people should stop using the word 'queer', that's a word that only queer people get to use." Not because I think that it's necessarily true, but because that's the normal way social conversations around reclaimed slurs & pejoratives evolve. You rarely hear people on tumblr saying "black people/hispanic people/asian people aren't allowed to say [slur that has been used specifically against them]." Because most of us recognize that that's nonsense, and that you don't get to tell minorities which words they can and can't reclaim.

But tumblr didn't do that with the word 'queer'. It didn't go the usual route of discussion around who can and can't say what. Tumblr just jumped straight into trying to erase the word completely. And that is because the discourse around 'queer' isn't a conversation that evolved naturally within our community. It was purposefully (and successfully) created out of thin air from a sudden, relentless onset of terf propaganda. Terfs who hated having a trans-inclusive umbrella term for our community, who wanted nothing more than to disrupt unity. Well congratu-fucking-lations, it's been disrupted.

also… let me just say this… some parts of pride just straight up are not for kids. and that’s okay! pride is about sex workers fighting back against cops not all of that is child friendly. but these things are all extremely easy to avoid if you do not want to be around it!

This was not a pre-planned event. The home office just showed up in the morning to take them. A neighbour tweeted asking for help and people mobilised and united entirely on their own. None of these people woke up today knowing this is what they were going to do.

That man who was under the van? He layed there for EIGHT HOURS so it couldn’t move.

The local mosque opened up and started handing out refreshments to the people protesting:

This was the ultimate “fuck you” to the British government. It was an absolutely incredible show of solidarity and what happens when people mobilise.
