Back at that research paper again, feeling very good about it (and our chances of being published authors). Another conference is on the horizon, going to present our poster again.

"The consistent display of Black patients as mere disease exemplars also blunted physicians' compassion. The result of exploiting the "clinical material" was a damping of sensitivity and altruism towards Black patients, and this became an important but unacknowledged part of a physician's training.

One powerful illustration of this process is found in the touching November 1846 memoirs of the newly minted Dr. Pray. He recounted how during his first anatomical dissection he had filled in overwhelming sympathy for the fate of the young girl under his scalpel. "Today are subject, a poor Negro girl, was brought up. Poor, despised and disregarded African, degraded and despised in life you are to be made a spectacle of and subject of ridicule and obscene jest even in death." Yet, under professional pressure, he immediately launched into a detailed public surgical dissection of the girl's labia.

A year later, the same doctor laughingly wrote of his antics the night before, when he had delighted in making a group of white women of his own social class scream in horror. How? By frightening them with "a piece of dead nigar" that he has saved from the dissecting table.

...Students such as the young George Pray were likely to be the most idealistic of caregivers, but they were also the most vulnerable to professional repercussions should they offend professors. They could not afford to criticize instructors, even obliquely, by suggesting that the clinical material should be treated as sensitively as white private patients. Eventually, students absorbed the racist values that informed their education at every turn."

There's so many, but I wrote down the ones from the sections I'm most familiar with. Having a paper list makes it feel less overwhelming, then when I have my ideas I'll go back and work them into the doc.

I hope someone else from the group hops in to help because when I tell you there's over 100 changes/additions/clarifications to be made....

I was torn between making an April to-do list or not. This is really the last month of the semester since finals are the week of May 4th. The last item on the list feels like a bit of a cop-out but a list doesn't feel complete without at least three things on it. [ ] fill out two scholarship applications

[ ] submit some sort of creative writing somewhere

[ ] be in good shape for finals-- ideally, a B or C on the final/final project should get me to an A in the class. I find it more stressful when I have to get an A on the final in order to get an A overall, even though I know I can probably do it.

(I initially felt like I should put more on it but I also know that conferences are going to take up quite a bit of time this month as well.)

Update on that to-do list:

[ ] fill out two scholarship applications- I did not do this. Got that research grant but I filled that out in February so it does not count for April even though I received the check just yesterday. I don't know how an entire month went by without filling out any new scholarship applications but I'll make up for it in the summer.

[X] submit some sort of creative writing somewhere- submitted one of my papers to an essay contest, we'll see in mid-June if that amounts to anything, I'm counting it

[X] be in good shape for finals-- ideally, a B or C on the final/final project should get me to an A in the class. t minus one week until research presentations at my university

one of my last days of undergrad- what i did todayyy

8:30- woke up and snoozed my alarm 8:40- woke up for real, got dressed and packed my bag 9:00- breakfast was very yellow today: scrambled eggs, hashbrowns with mustard on them, orange juice/water. i half-cut it because juice is so sugary i will not sit still in class if i have straight up orange juice 9:30- class started, it was a presentation day and i'm sorry but if the presentations aren't on the exams then i am one of those people who quietly work on something else. i typed up a discussion post and gathered up peer reviewed references for one of our last projects in clinical methods. 10:45- class ended. i listened to some of my current audiobook while i started walking. i went to another campus nearby that has a good sushi place. the walk was very nice because everything is in full bloom right now. 11:20- arrived at my destination, snagged a table before the lunch rush. i started in on the last chapters for abnormal psych. on the last exam i got an A again, i want to finish the year the same way 12:30- lunch: lavender boba tea, seaweed salad, and a california roll. Had on Dreaming Spanish while I ate because I can't use chopsticks and take notes at the same time lmaoooo. Then shifted back to the notetaking. 1:20- packed up and walked back to my campus. On my way to the dorm, stopped at the library to print handouts for a different final project 2:00- got to the dorms, checked my mail, played some of this match three game 2:25- started some extra credit exam practice, added some cards to one of my anki decks 3:30- left for work 4:00- clocked in 8:30- break: salad with chicken 10:00- clocked out. since the closers had to empty the ice cream machine to clean it, our manager let us each take a cup of ice cream home so it wasn't wasted. and that's why they're my favorite. I ate it while i was driving 10:30- got home, buzzed my hair in the sink because it was getting a little long again, showered, and now it's time to go to bed

total steps: 15,832

I need to do some of these while preparing for finals. these posts really keep me on track regardless of whether anyone reads them or not
