"Why not make female heroes more feminine so girls know you don't have to be masculine to save the world" is misguided. The target audience of heroic adventure genre is not children who actually save the world in a literal sense, it's children who want a cathartic outlet for the struggles and injustice they face. And one of the most common types of injustice that many girls and children assumed to be girls are subjected to is forced feminization.

there was a great study a few years that went into the whole "ppl online are bigger jerks than irl cuz theres a virtual wall and no repercussions" and the researchers were expecting to see that be the case but it turns out that people who were really angry or argumentative online were also found to just be assholes in person and people who were pretty patient and nice online were found to be patient and nice in real person as well
and it just debunked that whole cynical idea that people will naturally be mean if theres no punishment for it
the researchers found that being online didnt make people more hostile, but that being online allowed already hostile people to dominate forum conversations, and the less aggressive people were much less likely to reply or engage, ending in just the aggressive people bickering at eachother
The reason the PACBI BDS statement on no other land is especially important is because of its production company that has been boycotted for years before the movie was even made. It's true the language and the ideas surrounding the film are iffy at best, equating the oppressed and oppressor in ways that further the narrative of genocide, but the most relevant issue is that NOL accepted money from a group called "Close Up", which is explicitly an Israeli project that aims to normalize apartheid and occupation.
It's important to remember that part of the reason we even talk about these things is because Palestinians are so thoroughly disenfranchised to the point where we are expected to thank people for recognizing our humanity. Honestly, if you are not Palestinian and you consider yourself a genuine ally, you should sit this discussion out. Many, many Palestinians couch our language and demands when speaking to people about anything related to Palestine so you having a Palestinian friend who thinks BDS is stupid for doing this should realize that you definitely do not have the full context of the discussion and don't understand the nuances of how this affects us. The number of nonPalestinians who have commented on this to let people know they disagree (at best) with BDS is far too high. Some have even gone as far as to assert that BDS is racist against israelis (aka, "the Palestinians are doing reverse racism!"). If you want to read about "Close Up," you can find a written piece by BDS from 2019, following a letter signed by hundreds (!!!) of filmmakers insisting on denouncing the org.

Marcellus Williams is scheduled to be executed on Sept. 24 for a crime DNA proves he did not commit. The St. Louis County prosecuting attorney reviewed these DNA results and filed a motion to vacate Mr. Williamsā conviction because he believed the DNA results proved by clear and convincing evidence that Mr. Williams did not commit this crime. Although the circuit court has not yet scheduled a hearing to address this motion ā and no court has ever considered the new exculpatory evidence ā the Missouri Supreme Court set an execution date for Mr. Williams.

i hate guilt-tripping posts and i don't want to make this one but i do want to observe that a post i made trying to raise people's hopes around the mass response to facist rioting in the UK got thousands of notes very quickly and has been seen by lots and lots of people, and this post which is asking you to do the antifascist work of trying to save a man's life by signing a petiton--which takes literally a minute, you don't even need to verify your email--hasn't even made it to 70 people yet. i'd also like to point out that petitions do change things, the innocence project has said as much, you will help make a difference, your voice does matter, and marcellus williams deserves to live. we all do. help keep him alive, please.
I know this isnāt a novel observation but Iāve been reading a lot of articles about colonial and imperial policy (specifically demography history papers) & one pattern that keeps coming up is that colonial/imperial governments try to institute what can reasonably be described as āgoodā social policies in colonised places (like vaccine programs, funding for schools, etc, things that are associated with the smooth functioning of a state), and these are often rejected by local colonised governments and people because like obviously they donāt trust colonial/imperial administrators wanting to become involved with their healthcare or education. And what often ends up happening is this backlash against āprogressiveā policies because theyāre being pushed by colonial governments, so you get shit like the Catholic Church running all the primary schools in Ireland because they refuse to open British-funded state schools, or people refusing to immunize their children because those āpublic goodsā are (rationally & understandably) associated with things like US imperial population management programs. And then these colonial & imperial administrators turn around and say look! These people wonāt even accept money for schools and vaccines! Look how backwards they are! And paint colonised populations as Great Rejectors of Democracy which western populations then readily eat up. Just a really horrendous feedback loop of misery that generates a lot of āsecondaryā death and violence on top direct colonial oppression and plunder
the vaccine thing is insidious even now. the us government using healthcare workers to gather intelligence for directing drone strikes in afghanistan led to a suspension of the polio vaccine campaign in taliban controlled areas. afghanistan was the polio capital of the world in 2018. they've resumed polio vaccination campaigns now under the taliban, but the death and misery of those infected was completely avoidable.
