Something I just noticed about those Ao3 bot comments...

I've seen this style of bot comment before but never gotten one myself. When I saw the email and clicked through to delete the comment, I was pleasantly surprised to see that Ao3 had acted quickly and already removed both the comment and the bot account.

But upon reading the first two sentences, it dawned on me that these comments aren't just a pre-written message, it's a custom message summarizing that chapter of my work. I can only assume it's done through AI, but man, how is it also making this many grammatical errors along the way? It's almost funny. Almost.

I still stand firm in wanting to keep my works public, as freely available content on the internet is something I value and want to support, but it would suck if public-facing fics become overrun with these increasingly sophisticated bot comments. Rooting for Ao3 to continue implementing countermeasures to keep our community free of these scams.

fanfiction is a rare gem and a solid, living proof that, in a world of tiktok, influencers and content posting, not everything is about money and going viral. art can still be art just for the sake of the artists’ pure love, joy and passion for the art they create. fanfic writers write 100k words and more about the characters they love for free. just because they love these characters and the art of writing so much. art is not dead and the world is still beautiful.

I once checked an author's AO3 profile to see what they'd been up to since leaving off an unfinished fic I'd been recommended, only to discover that they'd abandoned it to write a long-form Harry Potter fic, abandoned that for another long-form Harry Potter fic, then abandoned the second Harry Potter fic to write about Sasuke fucking Spider-Man.
