Hey hamlet! Thank you for answering my question. Sorry for bothering you but another question popped up in my mind. Why did Blanca not choose Ash’s side immediately? In the manga, it was shown that he sometimes chose his side and then with the whole mercenaries thing he chose Dino’s side. Why did he do that?

No worries, you aren’t bothering me!! I love answering asks on Banana Fish. 

I think Blanca chose Dino’s side because he genuinely thought it was best for Ash. Blanca is someone who doesn’t want freedom in the same way as Ash: he binds himself to contracts and in many ways has given up on a life with love and hope post-Natasha’s death. Blanca is exactly what Ash does not want to become, but Blanca just wants to keep Ash alive more so than free. He’s never free, so he gives up on that and focuses on just keeping what he loves alive. 

Natasha he failed to keep alive, and so then it’s Ash and then Yut-Lung. It’s not a coincidence the terms of his contract with Yut-Lung are that he will only protect Yut-Lung, not murder on whim. 

He also pretty clearly chose to try to help Ash from within the system of contracts because it became clear to him that Ash was dying anyways in Dino’s care, and so to keep him alive he chose to help him. (I also don’t think he chose to protect Yut-Lung only to help Ash; he pretty clearly cared about Yut-Lung too.) 

“Private Opinion” really establishes how Blanca really does love and care about Ash, and tries to protect him by breaking Marvin’s arm and teaching him to protect himself, but what’s tragic is that Ash is 14 in this side story. By the time of “Angel Eyes,” Ash is in juvie, Blanca is gone, and it’s only been a year. Ash also tells Eiji at one point that this girl he had a crush on was killed when he was 14… I think it’s likely that Blanca saw what happened, immediately flashed back to himself and Natasha, and left after that because it was too hard for him. Blanca is absolutely projecting onto Ash and Yut-Lung:

But Blanca realizes in the end that to keep Ash alive he has to work outside of the system too, hence why he breaks his contract with Yut-Lung (but still does what he can to protect him). 

Blanca will break rules for people he cares about. Eventually. But he’s traumatized too and it takes him time to get over his cowardice and to realize that, for someone like Ash, there are things worse than dying: to stop projecting, really. 

But Blanca is still unable to overcome his own self-hatred, even though he knows it’s self-defeating. He thinks people like him and Ash should be alone, but in the end he can’t even agree with that: 

If Blanca had just said to Ash what he said to Yut-Lung… sigh. I really love Blanca’s character: he’s incredibly complex, and very, very morally gray, and I want to shake him.

How to Backup your Tumblr

I was just semi-complaining that I was still looking for a decent way to backup my +6k posts without having to use paid services or even just wordpress (which has an import from tumblr tool that asks for permission to access your blog and also make posts), when I decided to actually put some effort into my google search. 

Results were positive: I have successfully backed up my blog* 

*By which I mean: everything that I have ever posted.  Not included: drafts, queue, likes, followers, following, comments, notes, chat. 

I followed this method (word by word), and now have a 450 MB folder on my computer with the name of my blog on it containing: 

1. Folder “Archive” (contains .html files listed by month) 2. Folder “Media” (contains gifs and images, mine has +1k files in it; might contain also audios but I have no way of confirming that because I’ve never reblogged an audio post from this blog) 3. Folder “Posts” (contains single .html files, each one a post; I have +4k files in it) 4. Folder “Theme” (contains only my avatar, but it might be a matter of if you have personalized themes or not) 5. .html file “Index” (by opening it it will give you the archive of your blog organized by month; clicking on a month will open up the archive for that month, and you’ll be able to read all the posts for that month as if you were on your blog**, except sans your theme graphic, with each page containing 50 posts)

**I can see gifs, links, embedded videos, tags, number of notes (but I can’t open up the notes, clearly), text is also correctly formatted. 

So yeah, in case anyone wants a very quick way to back up their blog, it took me less than 10 minutes. 

P.S. I didn’t have any issue, but to be on the safe side always check for spyware and virus threats before and after downloading anything.

this is actually really useful if you have an art blog full of years of work that you otherwise no longer have access to the original files. A lot of the art I have in the early days of my art blog are in that boat. I did this process JUST for that reason and I was pretty astonished at just how many pieces of media it backs up! (literally all of it) Drawings I didn’t even realize were sitting in my archive due to having been posted to text posts or undercuts, or untagged for years! It’s worth it if just for that, even if tumblr isn’t shutting down or deleting your blog.

Just a question here...

I've only been following the anime so far and I'm planning to read the manga soon (so no manga-related spoilers please, especially the ending) but I'm curious as to why some people hate Blanca especially because of the advice he gave to Ash or what he's done so far? Maybe it's just me but when I saw Episode 18, I hadn't felt that angry/disgusted at him since I took his current position and the way he presented himself into account (that and I also looked back to the EP18 scene after we find out just a tid bit of his background, courtesy of Yut Lung in Episode 19). I mean, he's still looking out for Ash when he gets the chance. Maybe he just can't afford to risk so much for one boy, especially if he's dealing with someone influential like Dino.

I also just thought that part of his advice was based off personal experience.

That and I ended up reading Private Opinion too which gave me more insight on his psyche so it gave me more food for thought.

I just wanna hear your opinions about him, good or bad.

my favorite thing i’ve learned in college is that way back in ancient china there was this poet/philosopher guy who wrote this whole pretentious poem about how enlightened he was that was like “the eight winds cannot move me” blahblahblah and he was really proud of it so he sent it to his friend who lived across the lake and then his friend sends it back and just writes “FART” (or the ancient Chinese equivalent) on it and he was SO MAD he travels across the lake to chew his friend out and when he gets there his friend says “wow. the eight winds cannot move you, but one fart sends you across the lake”
