hollanov fics i'm not writing but would love to read pt. 3

*a mix of canon-adjacent, compliant, divergent, and au, possibly very niche due to self indulgence jshgdfjksgf*

warning: includes a couple of TLG SPOILERS under the cut, and a mentions of canonical character death/overdose (irina) !!!!!!

shane and ilya both work for college hunks hauling junk (we're on the same wavelength fr @greywaren-lynch )

2000's mall au where shane works at the pretzel shop and ilya works at the hot topic directly across from it

the hollanders run a small town burial and cemetery service in canada. grigori’s dementia gets worse earlier, and ilya, left responsible for planning and organizing after irina's death, finds an opportunity to have his mother secretly buried far away from russia. he has to choose very quickly and ends up picking the hollander place, deciding that he’ll spend the next few years finding any way he can to get there and visit (probably through hockey ? but could be au too) just content knowing she won’t be stuck in the same place she suffered for so long. shane has taken over most of the physical labor of running the graveyard so his parents can run the phones and other logistics, and sometimes he makes a habit of talking to the graves because he doesn’t make real life friends well and this way he can't say the wrong thing. he likes talking with one in particular, irina, because she never gets any visitors. he brings flowers for each anniversary, and she's incidentally grown to be a very close confidant of shane's as he navigates several life milestones through high school, college, and beyond. one anniversary he shows up and finds someone in his spot :') (ilya thought not burying his mother in russia was his gift to her, but later, living in ottawa with the love of his life, he'll look back at the whole thing as his mother's gift to him instead.)

ilya's name gets somehow caught up in a scandal in boston that has legal implications, maybe even badly enough to threaten his visa if it escalates. he's innocent, but the problem is that his sole alibi is that he was with shane when it happened. as the case gains media attention and ilya is temporarily prohibited from playing, too stubborn to tell the truth and possibly out shane despite being terrified of the alternative, shane has to grapple with the pros and cons of coming clean.

instead of just posting the fanmail video, brad blackmails them for something with it

shane gets into an accident directly after leaving ilya's - a place that is private, yes, once you get past the gate but is also very well documented as being ilya's house - post tuna melt, and ilya has to deal with a barrage of what the fuck was shane hollander doing in boston a) on a day when they don't have a game and b) so close to ilya rozanov's house all while shane is incapacitated somehow (but okay) and shane's parents are breathing down his neck and sveta is suspicious and his team needs to know privately if he was involved somehow lest things take a legal turn and ilya is spiraling the fuck out on TOP of being catatonically distressed about shane and also sort of blaming himself for the whole thing in the first place. HAPPY ENDING THOUGH IM BEGGING maybe relationship reveal with shane's parents or something

ilya grapples with a lot of Feelings when his brother gets diagnosed with dementia

crack fic-ish based on this post by scartafacci: tuna melt happens because ilya time-accurately around 2014/2015 says they should ‘netflix and chill’ which shane takes literally and then freaks out because they’ve never hung out like that before and chaotic miscommunication - and just maybe some actual communication - ensues

more explorations of what scott and ilya's relationship could be like. I do enjoy the trope of menace!ilya and done-with-his-shit!scott but I also think that with the history with scott's parents / scott having to sort of parent himself / kip's independence being crucial to their dynamic could all lead to ilya and scott having some sort of weird, nebulously codependent father figure (the normal kind or the george michael kind) type of relationship throughout the years in which scott is horrified by his need to take care of ilya and ilya has no idea how to act around a person whom he's accidentally come to consider as an authority figure/person he respects who doesn't actively belittle him mentally or physically. it could range from totally fucked to incredibly wholesome, and I think it'd be double interesting to figure out how it plays into the scott/kip and ilya/shane relationships.

OR (with slight timeline changes from canon) maybe grigori is deemed unfit or passes earlier on in the story, and ilya and his brother somehow end up in the US foster care system. since his brother is older he ages out quicker, but ilya is still young and meets a newly orphaned scott hunter two or three years older than him but still in the system. they bond and end up helping each other navigate things, which would give them such a different background when/if they still both end up in the MLH. maybe scott declines taking ilya in when he ages out so that he can start his career and intends to come back for him, but ilya is hurt by it and vows to get just as good and better than scott so he won't need to rely on anyone again. (again would be cool to see how it ties into their respective relationships!)

ilya is prescribed the same pills that his mother overdosed with and spirals

apparently I'm feeling angsty today so I'm also throwing in: the main reason ilya ends up in the MLH and not the in-world equivalent of the KHL is that he attempts to end his life and grigori doesn't want shame to come to the family so ilya is sent to the US in hopes of covering it up with a fresh start. no one would ever know, except for the fact that ilya is left with some sort of permanent scar or disability (that doesn't interfere with the hockey playing) but that would be noticeable when being more intimate with shane outside of quick, casual sex.

something exploring ilya and sadism / how he deals with some of the more intense things he and shane do together versus his own unwavering resolve to avoid becoming anything remotely resembling his brother or father

bridesmaids au where ilya and shane meet when rose and svetlana get engaged and are jointly in charge of planning each of the events leading up to the wedding

something with the bears/raiders interacting with shane at the club

shane and ilya both separately have their own rituals/superstitions throughout the years before they go on the ice but once they're in ottawa together their pre-game rituals in the locker room get increasingly intimate and complicated and sort of weird for everyone else to witness :D and they snap at anyone who's looking :D as if they aren't doing it in the middle of the locker room :D

a time loop fic where ilya is constantly trying to figure out a way to get out of it with irina alive. he finally does it - only to realize that for some reason, there's no version of the timeline where he gets to keep both irina and shane and he has to choose

some scenario where ilya gets stranded in montreal (misses a flight, etc.) and is alone in a city that "hates" him, is easily recognizable, and doesn't have anywhere to go last minute so shows up at shane's until he can get out

ok stop here if you don't want to read my insanely long obsession au rambling (also minor spoilers for that movie!):

hear me out. in this universe cup wishes are real, but are somewhat regarded as myth. canon divergence post-rose where shane still realizes he’s gay and wants to be with ilya, but in this universe for some reason he can’t (ilya says no to protect himself/russia problems/shane thinks he’s with someone else now/ilya goes through with the break up, etc). so he pours himself into hockey even more than usual and it works -- he wins the cup that year (no marleau hit) and usually that’s been so fulfilling but this time he has a Scott Hunter Moment of looking around the ice and wishing he had someone to share it with. that night after being dragged out with the team to party and drink, shane comes home to an empty house and makes a wish along the lines of ‘i wish this was all i needed’ (implying that he wishes he could be completely fulfilled by hockey and nothing else, because then he wouldn’t have to deal with the other Feelings). then he passes out/falls asleep. when he wakes up, things are … different. he’s running on almost autopilot, and every action that he takes is somehow directly related to hockey. he’s vaguely aware of it, but finds that he can't break himself out of it even when he is. his diet, sleep schedule, workout routines, practice schedules all get more strict, to the point where other things start falling away - his relationships with his parents, his friends, his teammates - until he’s completely isolated. when the new season starts and they play boston, ilya notices that something is off. he keeps trying to get shane’s attention but it’s like shane doesn’t even register him off the ice, and only on it purely as an opponent - one he’s oddly determined to defeat and no longer having fun in the process. this builds up until all stars, where he and shane are playing together like in canon (but a year later). over the long weekend, ilya finds a note left for him somewhere in shane’s handwriting that says something like IT’S NOT ME. (iykyk) he is of course hella confused and concerned after already suspecting that something was up, so he gets a key to shane’s hotel room and goes over that night, and shane is already asleep. if you’ve seen obsession, you’ll know the parallel i’m talking about where nikki has instances where she can break through and speak honestly as herself to bear, and one of them happens in the middle of the night when the ‘other’ nikki is asleep. it would basically be this; with ‘other shane’ (ie the one obsessed with only hockey) is sleeping/’away’, the real shane can speak to ilya. so they have to talk quietly in the dark, careful not to wake the other shane who can use the information against them. shane explains what happened, his feelings and the wish he made. the cup wish only lasts for as long as someone has possession of the cup, so theoretically it could just expire after a year and shane would go back to normal. but the ‘other shane’ is steadily obliterating literally all the competition and at this rate is going to win again this year, and will probably use the resulting wish - since he’s presumably in control of shane during waking hours - to keep it going in order to continue to feed the obsession with winning. ilya ends up being pretty much the only person who can effectively break the wish/curse, because he’s evenly matched with shane both in terms of hockey talent and in terms of knowing shane well enough to be able to predict what he’ll do next - both the real shane and the version of him that’s constantly performing and competing with himself. boston has to beat montreal so that ilya can undo shane’s wish / make another one, and it could go several different ways from there. the world building /magical realism is also up for interpretation.
