(Image ID) A tweet by Tony Choi that reads “Pride month starts in three days. Pride isn’t brought to you by T-Mobile and Absolut Vodka. It was brought to you by drag queens, trans women throwing bricks. By lesbians and queer women taking care of gay men dying of AIDS in the face of an intentional government neglect. End ID.
Holy crap this is so important. we need to make sure not to lose the concept of pride in all the advertising and the “we support pride” from companies that haven’t done shit.
Gonna also mention Pride Month was created by Brenda Howard, a bisexual Jewish woman.

not to sound too much like a millennial who has lived through two major economic downturns but like, i don't think banks should be able to give you 0.1% interest and call it a "high interest savings account" with a straight face. thanks for the 10¢ i guess, if i find a dime on the sidewalk i'll have doubled my free money for the month
and then turn around and say 6% is a low interest rate when you're the one paying them
I just saw the most Galaxy Brain gender take ever, from a cis man on reddit
[ID: a screenshot of a comment from reddit, with no username visible. The commend reads: This doesn’t make a ton of sense to me either. Setting aside the question of whether gender/sex is assigned or observed at birth, the gender I was assigned at birth was ‘boy.’ The gender I have now is ‘man’. Boys and men have different gender roles, and few adults identify as boys anymore. From this standpoint, every adult has a different gender than the one they had at birth. End ID]
Framing “girl” and “boy” as separate genders from “woman” and “man” is such an amazing take. it’s a framework that accommodates and explains so many trans experiences. Some trans people never were their AGAB. Some feel like they were their AGAB, but that that changed (usually when puberty hits, which is when you start “becoming a man/woman”. The accepted societal path is that girls grow up to into women, and boys grow up into men. But some girls grow up into men, and some boys grow up into women. This guy was a boy who grew up into a man, which generally works out pretty well for people. Some boys and girls grow up into people who aren’t men or women, even! It’s like this random cis guy skipped right over transgender 101, 102, 201, etc. and stumbled directly into Transgender Nirvana.
Get. that. ass.
Protests are ongoing outside the homes of Brett Kavanaugh and the conservative Supreme Court Justices.
them mfs just described democracy like it’s unfair
“We won’t be bullied into following the will of the people we’re supposed to serve” -conservatives
So here's the thing: the Supreme Court really *ISN'T* supposed to be a political entity in the same way that the legislative and executive branches are. The whole point was to have a system of checks and balances to ensure that there wasn't a "tyranny of the majority" situation in government where a persecuted minority could be oppressed by the voting masses. A Supreme Court that is untouchable by electoralism means, in theory, that they will be able to interpret the law in peace, apart from the politics de jour.
The problem is, this only works if the appointment procedure works and if the justices are honest. Neither is currently true.
Republicans have managed to not only game the system for appointing justices, these justices directly LIED about their stances during their confirmation hearings, saying Roe was settled law even if they disliked it.
So yeah. Hopefully we can bully them or find a way to unseat them, but this is what he's referencing here. In theory, he's correct, but he is directly part of the group responsible for breaking down this particular framework in reality, and so it's real rich that he's crying crocodile tears about it now.
oh my GOD thank you so much for saying this i have been internally screaming for weeks but didn’t know how to say anything
Okay so 100% to everything you’ve said PLUS some good news and bad news;
good news: there is a way to remove justices from power, despite what you may think - checks and balances means that they can be impeached too.
bad news: congress has to do it.
good news: with enough effort (a lot of effort), you can absolutely bully congress into doing what you want
bad news: they only listen to their constituents
conclusion = CALL YOUR REPS ESPECIALLY IF YOU LIVE IN A RED STATE tell them the supreme court is not representing the best interests of the people and are attempting to undermine decades of legal precedent out of bigotry, and will cause the deaths of hundreds of women due to a disrespect for the concept of privacy that is found implicitly within the constitution on the basis of several of the bill of rights, including the right to free speech, the right to religion, the right to freedom from quarter, and due process laws, which was determined prior to the Roe opinion - someone out there in the activism sphere definitely has scripts ready to go on what to say about this but that person is not me, so that’s all i can advise.
AND IF YOU LIVE IN WEST VIRGINIA, MAKE JOE MANCHIN’S LIFE HELL
all that being said please totally do not *wink wink* continue to harass supreme court justices, the last thing we want is to remind them that they are not above public shaming. its not like they’re political figures and civil servants and thus subject to the criticisms of the people or anything.
anyway FUCK kavanaugh gorsuch barrett and thomas specifically (i have mixed feelings about roberts but he also sucks), its about time court justices get reminded that they aren’t gods among men, especially when changing public opinion about the sanctity of the court is literally their own goddamn fault
Yeah, I was aware that you could impeach justices via Congress, but that would likely require all hell breaking loose and Congress feeling threatened enough to take action.
Which is to say, I'm not holding my breath, but, well... Gee, wouldn't it be a shame if all hell broke loose?

i’ve been on hold at my library for a book about asexuality for a few weeks and i just read an article about some concepts in the book re: consent. and holy shit. blew my mind. i’ve NEVER read about consent in the context of a relationship with an ace and an allo that resonated so strongly with me, and as a person in such a relationship!! it’s so!!! i’m even more excited for the book now.
for anyone interested, the article is How to Negotiate Better Consent: An Asexual Perspective and the book i’m waiting for is Ace: What Asexuality Reveals About Desire, Society and the Meaning of Sex.
god okay, just to gush about this more, the author suggests using the categories of enthusiastic, willing, unwilling and coerced consent (rather than just “enthusiastic consent” or “no means no”). i really recommend reading the whole article linked above, but what blew my mind is the distinction between enthusiastic and willing consent. it gets broken down like this:
Enthusiastic consent:
When I want you
When I don’t fear the consequences of saying yes OR saying no
When saying no means missing out on something I want
Willing consent:
When I care about you though I don’t desire you (right now)
When I’m pretty sure saying yes will have an okay result and I think maybe that I’d regret saying no
When I believe that desire may begin after I say yes
and like!!! it made me realize i may have never actually enthusiastically consented in my life, but like, that doesn’t mean i have never or cannot consent! i almost always fall into the “willing consent” framework and i’ve never seen that….validated anywhere. anyway, it’s just given me this perspective about my sexuality and consent in general and better ways to relate to my partner and!!! idk!!! thank goodness for other ace people, is what i’m saying.
This is very useful and a lot of sex work can also be best understood as willing consent, where the indirect consequences of having sex (getting paid) are what is desired and the direct consequences (having probably-mediocre sex with someone you don’t actively desire) are not considered so negative that they outweigh the indirect consequences.
Which is a definition of consent that gives sex workers agency and sees their consent as a choice made again and again based on the pros and cons, not something that is coerced and also not something that always exists by default simply because they are sex workers.
Recognizing willing consent is probably validating for a lot of people who have consent to sex without meeting the definition of enthusiastic consent.
Welcome back to its really hot and I’m going to murder someone

School being so traumatic people have anxiety dreams about it for life sure doesn't seem uh. Normal
I didn't even have a particularly bad experience at school outside unmedicated ADHD stress but I get school nightmares constantly
I feel like so many people accept this as a quirky fun shared experience. But it's pretty alarming that such a huge chunk of people have RECURRING dreams about forgetting to take a class or complete a project DECADES after leaving the school system

If someone on the street hands you a personality test, do check the mailing address and the fine print to see if it was made by the church of Scientology. And then do not mail or email them for your results because if you do that they will literally never leave you alone.
And they are a destructive cult. To be clear. Scientology bad. If you get a pamphlet from them tear it up and throw it in the garbage.
I’ve also had Scientologists hand me pamphlets for seemingly normal meditation classes and nutritional and mental health advice. If a random person hands you a thing on the street, check who it’s from. Look at the mailing address, any watermarks, any fine print. If they’re an organization you’ve never heard of, see if they have a parent company or religious organization that they’re working for.
The church of Scientology (and some other cults) owns a lot of businesses. Some of which even pretend to be a form of therapy. Because they are anti-therapy. Do not blindly trust random people handing you booklets. Read the fine print.
Literally had them leave a pack of the personality test things in my apartment building lobby where the notmally-legit busnisses set up stands sometimes.

cannot believe twitter libs are whining that protesting outside Kavanaugh's house is iNcOnSiDeRaTe To HiS nEiGhBoRs. if you live nextdoor to Brett fucking Kavanaugh and you're not shitting on his porch or at least throwing eggs at his house every day you're wasting your life.

It was, in fact, his neighbors who organized the protest.

I dislike how clumsy it is to share Twitter threads but here is a portion from a guy I follow (for his trans porn and monster fucking content at that) echoing a sentiment that aces, traumatized people, people with low libido, etc. can fully relate to. The rest is here and it’s absolutely worth the read.
“Sex isn’t special”
Thank you! I’ve always been fascinated by how sexuality is viewed in such a dramatic, over-criticized way when it’s just another one of those things we do in life, no different from eating, sleeping or playing.
This is also why sex workers don’t appreciate being pathologized for having sex for no other reason than ‘hell yeah money’ or ‘sure, beats an office job’.
