Wild. Insane.

He’s so…like he loves Buck. From the moment they met, Eddie is the one who’s inserted himself into Buck’s life. He refused to let Buck dislike him. Having a kid helped, but even that he didn’t reveal until the second date day (well episode, but whatever). Eddie was so adamant about being with Buck that he weaseled his way in despite how very evidently Buck did not want that to happen. In fact, Buck detested the idea. He laughed about it when saying “Besides, you wanted us to bond. We might end up real close” to Bobby. The only reason Buck did cave was because of Eddie’s praise (see: “you’re badass under pressure, brother” and “you could have my back any day”). If not for that, I fear Buck would have continued seething at the sight of him, my stubborn boy.

All that to say, Eddie crumpled at the instantaneous loss of Buck during the lawsuit. He trusted this man with his son, told him “there’s no one in this world I trust with my son more than you”, and then…he’s gone? Just like that? The person he trusted so easily with his entire heart? Which is why Eddie is so pissed, why he lashes out and yells and puts the blame on Buck, calls him “exhausting”– because in reality, he’s projecting. He feels like the exhausting one for feeling some claim to Buck/his presence in his life (see: “do you know how much Christopher misses you? How could you? You’re not around” and “no, but it prevents me from picking up the phone”).

Eddie misses simply calling Buck, let alone everything else that comes with having him as his best friend. He misses Buck coming to get Chris and take him to the zoo. He misses phone calls about nothing on their days off or in the evenings after Christopher is in bed. He misses Buck, wholly and truly, and that is why he’s so badly wishing he could’ve called Buck to get him. He wishes Buck could’ve seen how much he was going through– how much he needed his best friend. He wishes Buck knew how deeply he missed him.

Instead of saying that, they blow up at each other in a grocery store and have an argument like a couple in an estranged marriage in which they have joint custody but neither party is picking up the phone to make that a reality for the child. Their argument literally reads as temporarily separated husbands arguing about visitation rights. Which, one would think, is why everyone’s reactions are so extreme– and yes, to a point. Moreover, Buck and Eddie have known each other for, what, a little over a year at this point? That’s the real place the shock comes from. How could two men who’ve been friends for a year possibly have enough backplay to be having such an argument?

The answer is they don’t. Eddie just loves Buck that much.
