There was a quiet knock on the door, one not often heard anymore. Legs had been out for a while, not come home after hunting. He didn't know how long it had been, but he was back now, arms ladened in gifts and wood and bottles.

There was the sound of fumbling around in the house, like someone nearly tripping over something left on the floor. There was silence for a moment before the door creaked open.

“Ah, Stars- Sorry, I’ve not been expecting anyone-“ They stopped short on seeing who was at the door.

“…Dad?”

"Hey,,,"

He stood nervously, shifting his weight a bit. This was harder than he anticipated. How does one explain this?

”You’ve-“ They look down at the items in his arms, then back at his face, then looking him up and down. It wasn’t judgmental in the slightest, more like they were looking him over for anything wrong.

They blink a few times. Nope. He’s still there. No illusion or hallucination. “You’re back.”

Their hands shook slightly by their side as they stepped away from the doorframe to let him in.

“Come in.” Does he need verbal permission since he’s been… away? Would the house not recognize him if they didn’t?

"I'm sorry I vanished-"

Legundo said, setting down his items and holding out a small, barely wrapped gift for Water.

"I didn't expect to be gone ao long."

Their eyes drifted away from the pile of materials—he really had gotten so much, it was a wonder he could carry it all—to the gift, gently taking it. The wrapping was poor, but clearly done with as much care as clawed hands could allow.

They hesitated in unwrapping it, but peeled away the covering slowly after just a moment.

Inside lay a perfectly made leatherbound notebook, complete with quill and ink. The cover was stamped with a dragon and the pages were hand stitched inside.

"Thought of you.."

He said nervously, pickijg at his claws as he looked at them.

"I known it doesn't really forgive months away but.. may help."

Water ran a hand down the front, tracing the imprinted dragon design. They had a shelf of notebooks in their room, all filled to the brim as journals. Most were either picked up from a shop a few towns away if they had the money for them, or ones they made themself with help from whoever was willing, but this… was the best made one they’ve seen.

They loved it.

They looked up from the book, seeing him wringing his claws together nervously.

With no more items in his hands, it was easy to hug him. They would have done it sooner, at the door, the instant they saw him—but they worried he would drop things, or get hurt. They let their eyes mist with tears now. They could only hold it for so long.

Legundo wrapped his arms around his kid, burying his face in their shoulder and running circles into their back.

"Im sorry-"

They sighed shakily into the embrace, letting the first tear fall. “You don’t have to be-“

Their throat closed up a bit. “You came back-“ Voicecrack. They were surprised it hadn’t happened sooner. “T-That’s all you need to do. That’s all the apology I need.”

"He kept pushing me to return sooner. I just needed to find the book-"

He said, breath shaky as he held the person he'd left close.

"I knew you'd like it."

“Instantly my favorite. You know me too well.” They say, having their head fall into his shoulder as well. Well, as much as they could. He was still taller than them. “Stars, I missed you- the house has felt so empty.”

He was barely louder than a whisper now, his hand stroking the others hair. He missed them. He felt wrong to go.

“It’s ok. Know I’m not upset. You came back, and you’re sorry. That’s all you needed to do.”

They still held the book, mind drifting to what their first entry would be. Dad came home today. I’ve never been happier.

This could be based on literally anything, including just vibes. But ideas could come from mythology (gods and spirits and heroes and monsters from different cultures). Or history (figures who famously studied or thought about or worked on water). Or media (many different stories, games, and movies have characters, classes, and species who are connected with oceans, lakes, and rivers). Or simple word association derivatives (for example, with "fire" you could get "combustion", which could then give Combu, Ombust, Stion, Costio, etc.).
