The Navy Created These Incredible ‘Then Vs. Now’ Photos Comparing Pearl Harbor Today To The Day Of The Attack
star trek actors are so strong for doing technobabble with a straight face. if you asked me to talk about how the technicron particles are mainlining the quantum blorbonator I would fall apart immediately
ANDRÉ BORMANIS (science consultant, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine)
An important lesson on technobabble came to me courtesy of Terry Farrell. I was at my first Deep Space Nine wrap party at the end of second season, and it’s the first time I’ve ever been to wrap party so it was like a pretty big deal to me. I’m walking around and talking to the people I know. And I see Terry Farrell standing off by herself. I’d never actually met her, so I sheepishly go up and introduce myself to her, and I said, “Ms. Farrell, I’m André Bormanis.” “Oh, nice to meet you. What do you do on the show?” I’m like, “I’m the science consultant. I’m the guy who puts all that technobabble into your dialogue.” And she literally grabbed me by the lapels and lifted me off my feet. She’s six feet tall. She’s a very tall, striking woman. She’s, like, “You fucking asshole!” And she starts shaking me, and I’m, like, “I’m sorry, it’s my job!”

I don't know who needs to hear this, but if the phrase "self care" doesn't resonate with you, try calling it "system maintenance" and see if that clicks.
Serenade for the Beluga
“GOLDEN THRONE LEV!” A decidedly annoyed voice bellows behind the pair “STOP SCARRING THE PROTECTEE!” A man in a single breasted, navy blue Elysian uniform with a maroon beret under his shoulder board turns toward Serge with a smile mared by a scar across the left side of his jaw and cheek. “Sorry. Good help y’know?”
Serge blinks before putting on a theatrically disappointed expression. “So I’m not being kidnapped for a fun time? Shame…” He ‘tsk’s as he shakes his head, before grinning with a chuckle.
“It’s fine, my friend. No harm done. If I may ask, what’s the situation..?” Perhaps they’d mistaken him for someone they were actually supposed to protect? Or had he already attracted too much attention on this world? Hmm.
“Oh a Inquisitor contacted us and well......” He points up at the ceiling or technically the vents inside “Thee might be some nastiness coming for you.” He gestures formally for the other to follow him “We do have something nice set up for you though.”
@bobbole’s amazing “You Don’t Remember the Somme?” art reminded me of Jeremy Deller’s art “We’re Here Because We’re Here” which I actually had the privilege of stumbling across in person when I was in Manchester in July 2016.
It’s Remembrance Weekend here so I thought I’d go down memory lane a little... (none of the photos are mine btw)
The ‘art’ included about 1,600 male volunteers, all dressed in the uniforms worn by the British army in the First World War. Each man represented a named individual who had been killed on the first day of the Battle of the Somme (1st July 1916). When approached by the public, the men would hand out a card bearing the name, battalion and, often, the age of the man they represented. In Deller’s words, these cards were “like small tombstones”.
Every so often, the men would sing “We’re Here Because We’re Here” which was put to the tune of Auld Lang Syne.
I still get chills just remembering.
THIS IS INCREDIBLE 😭
Oh wow, those are my tags in the wild (bizarre). We really were incredibly lucky to hear about the project in such detail, and I've got a few more facts if anyone's interested:
The weaving alone took three months and in the end they used 11,500 metres of fabric
There were 30 costume supervisors based at hubs around the country
The SAS designed a workout the volunteers could do while wearing the uniform that would help break it in and make it look natural
I basically spent the afternoon crying like a baby after the talk finished
“When did the Elysians get here?” Darius asks, slightly bewildered at his reinforcements. “Not complaining though.”
"Good frakkin' question!" A Sargent grabbed a vox caster and radio beacons from a Elysian with frankly to many ventilation holes. "Got a place I can set up Big Guy? Hate to have the rest of the battalion landing on roofs."
“This is a hive world there’s nothing but roofs!” Darius retorts as he throws a cultist off the side of the roof he stands on. “There’s a beacon at my location, big ass landing pad, land here.”
He glances up at the Astartes with a grin "What I get for napping during the briefing. You want Sentinels or Rifles down innn" The man glances at his chrono "5 minutes"
“They’ve got a lot of rocket launchers so Rifles.” Darius says as he lets Outcast sing it’s deadly song.
Mumbling into his newly liberated vox caster he runs to the platform and starting to unpack a beacon at each corner. By the time he had finished the first most of the Pathfinders were down. A small Elysian dwarfed by her hotshot las appeared next to Darius "Moters sttin' up. Wo needs tooo lose 'er 'eads?"
Darius, after visibly taking a second to translate the small woman’s speech, turns to her. “Focus on cultist leaders, let my Revenants deal with the Death Guard. It’s what we’re best at.”
Darius gets a rocket to the chest, falling flat on his back. After two seconds, he sits up with a groan. “I hate it when that happens.” He mumbles.
The rocket didn’t penetrate his armor.
The sniper tilted her head and made a plucking gesture with pointer and middle finger before resting her longlas on what used to be someone’s boot and removing the skull off a cultist with frankly too many feathers. “That looked fun.” A short Elysian with a scar covering most of the left side of his face, Lieutenant’s bars bends down and picks up a chunk of the Marine’s armor “Sorry I didn’t bring super glue.” He raises a plasma pistol and fires a overcharged round through a stubber nest “Having fun?”
“That’s not my armor, and yes.” Darius says, picking Outcast up as he stands. “Don’t worry, the fleet has enough super glue.”
Darius raises a hand, gesturing forward. The Revenants leave cover and begin their slow but steady advance.
“Hmm. Good! More for sniffing.” The Lieutenant draws his carbine and sticks beyond Darius pumping a hand in the air five time “BOUCE, BOUNCE BOUNCE, GO!” On the command 164.. 161 Elysians engaging their grav-packs swinging into the windows above the Heretics clearing down.

yes, but you’ve become something much worse.the cruelty finally got to you, the relentless torment of friends and loved ones pushed you over that fine line & now your enemies hit the ground and they DON'T get back up, but you're okay with that [ but not everyone else is. they don't look at you the same way, do they? you can tell yourself that you don't care, but you can't lie to me . i know you do. i do. ]
