Is there a term for a theatre kid (like me) who isin't socially considered a theatre kid bc;

- I cannot sing

- I cannot dance

- I can act but I am the equivalent of an extra in high school musical.

- basically no musical ability

- If you aren't what society technically considers a theatre kid, you are probably an artist (as in has talent in drawing) like me

- the main reason I do not do theatre is because I have the stability of a polvoron and I have such low self-esteem but weirdly high anxiety.

- BUT I DO HAVE A VERY STRONG LOVE FOR THEATRE AND MUSICALS I MEAN CHECK MY TUMBLR ACC ITS A THEATRE DISASTER.

If there is then its embarassing that i dont know the term or we really are just considered theatre kids but...closeted in a wayyy???? Or maybe im overthinking this??

I don’t think anyone can understand how mad I am at how they treated Ali Stroker last night. They literally kept her backstage because they didn’t have a ramp for the night. All they had to do was get one cheap little ramp and instead they completely degraded a Tony nominee, now winner, by setting her apart from everyone else. Until the Tony awards are accessible for all, then they’re not as inclusive as they boast about being.

This. People say that broadway needs more lgbt+ representation, which it does, but broadway NEEDS to have more people with disabilities represented. Ali should only be the beginning, but broadway needs to get their ish together and learn how to make their theater’s stage accessible on broadways biggest night. Especially when one of the nominees is disabled. Please just make broadway more accessible.

On the “Edgy Tumblr Musical” Culture...

Ok, so there’s something that’s been on my mind for quite a while, and that’s the culture and reactive counter-culture of the “Edgy Gen Z Musicals”, “Edgy Tumblr Musicals”, or simply, “Tumblr Musicals”.

The culture on this website of people obsessing over just a small slice of contemporary musical theatre and then labeling themselves a “theatre nerd uwu” can get incredibly annoying, especially to career actors and people who want to really talk theatre and get responses like, “owo Heathers is the best musical sry”, or, “Connor my trash son”. It’s a frustrating and often easily-toxic culture.

But! You know what’s also bad? The holier-than-thou attitude that comes from putting down people who are into the Tumblr Musicals. What do you get out of that? Just because someone hasn’t been introduced to classical theatre yet doesn’t make them “cringey” or “a poser” or “a fake fan”.

Both attitudes are gross and it always saddens me to see people arguing when really, at their core, both parties are devoted to the performing arts, whether that’s acting or directing professionally, running tech at their highschool, or just listening to cast recordings and getting lost in the music.

So here are your reminders:

1. There’s more to musical theatre than Hamilton, Heathers, DEH and BMC (and more to theatre than musicals, but that’s for another time)

2. People are allowed to like things that are popular? Sorry if that angers you??

3. If you try to talk theatre with someone and it turns out they’re only familiar with a handful of contemporary musicals and their favorite is Falsettos, instead of laughing at them or calling them a fake fan, why not introduce them to a classic, or a little-known off broadway gem, or something from the 50s with a completely different sound than they’re used to?

4. Hamilton is a piece of historical fiction based very heavily on real people. Shipping Alexander Hamilton with Thomas Jefferson…isn’t classy.

5. Theatre is subjective. Not everyone is going to know or like all the same things you do and that’s ok.

6. All that being said, if I hear about one more person romanticizing J.D. from Heathers, I will steal their kneecaps and delete their blog.

Personally I’m more into the modern era of musicals (1980-now), so sorry if I don’t know your favorite Golden Age musical. The style didn’t resonate with me and that’s all.

Newer musicals are popular because they’re good and enjoyable! They’re also easy for new musical fans to connect with and love. Honestly that might be where some people’s interests in musicals end, and that’s completely okay. Other people might have a deeper interest in it, and you can talk to those people.
