"Gardienne des phoenix" is the most complex of Leonor Fini’s four mythological paintings of the mid-fifties depicting female figures, perhaps earth goddesses, relating to birth, fecundity and propagation, wearing long flowing robes recalling priestly vestments ("La gardienne à l’œuf rouge" (1955), "La gardienne à l’œuf noir" (1955), "La dame ovale" (1956)). Peter Webb says of these works “… the deities embody power from the distant past, and their colored eggs have alchemical as well as mythological significance."
