One thing I just realised is that writers who are considering any kind of combat stuff in their writings should put their combat system in the game skill tree/AOE skill/team combo gauntlets.
Like, if I have a nickle everytime I see a game version of a story and question why they didn't use the combat in the big war arcs, I would have two nickles more than I woke up with.
The first being the combat system in Hogwarts Legacy versus the spells they use in the Harry Potter series. The spells combo. The spells mastery skills. The potions and herbology use?? I was tweaking when I realised the final battle would have been more fun to read/watch if they use Hogwarts Legacy combat system.
The second being the team ultimates in Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm because WHAT THE HECK DO YOU MEAN WE DIDN'T GET TO SEE THE KONOHA 12 USING THOSE ELITE TEAM COMBOS FULLY-ANIMATED IN THE HUNDREDS OF EPISODES ACTUAL WAR ARC???
I've been using em-dashes in my fanfics and self-indulgent comfort stories across multiple personas and fandoms before ChatGPT exists—back when I still need 3 floppy disks to save one file.
You can try to pry my em-dashes out of my cold, dead hands; and you shall not succeed.
"what did students do before chatgpt?" well one time i forgot i had a history essay due at my 10am class the morning of so over the course of my 30 minute bus ride to school i awkwardly used by backpack as a desk, sped wrote the essay, and got an A on it.
six months later i re-read the essay prior to the final exam, went 'ohhhh yeah i remember this', got a question on that topic, and aced it.
point being that actually doing the work is how you learn the material and internalize it. ChatGPT can give you a short cut but it won't build you the the muscles.
One time in university, I had to do a novel analysis for literature class but I was busy with extra-curriculars that I misremember the deadline. Found out that the deadline is much earlier than I thought it was and I hadn't finished reading the novel, let alone to be able to break it down into proper analysis.
Ended up not sleeping for solid three days reading the novel WHILE making a mindmap and annotations of the elements I need for the presentation, took a whole day organising the slides presentation of my novel breakdown, went to class on presentation day running purely on caffeine and willpower.
Aced the presentation and the report, scored a section based on the novel in the finals a few months later.
Before chatgpt, we put in actual effort in our works. It's much easier to remember stuff when you put effort to understand the subject-matter.

in all seriousness, please always keep backups of your works, write them somewhere else (google doc is a good choice) then copy and paste onto ao3 when you're done, because ao3 itself does not automatically save your works for you, meaning you can lose all of your progress
I'd not recommend Google docs tbh. Ellipsus is a much better alternative for writing online.

Bleeding:
Blood is warm. if blood is cold, you’re really fucking feverish or the person is dead. it’s only sticky after it coagulates.
It smells! like iron, obv, but very metallic. heavy blood loss has a really potent smell, someone will notice.
Unless in a state of shock or fight-flight mode, a character will know they’re bleeding. stop with the ‘i didn’t even feel it’ yeah you did. drowsiness, confusion, pale complexion, nausea, clumsiness, and memory loss are symptoms to include.
blood flow ebbs. sometimes it’s really gushin’, other times it’s a trickle. could be the same wound at different points.
it’s slow. use this to your advantage! more sad writer times hehehe.
Stab wounds:
I have been mildly impaled with rebar on an occasion, so let me explain from experience. being stabbed is bizarre af. your body is soft. you can squish it, feel it jiggle when you move. whatever just stabbed you? not jiggly. it feels stiff and numb after the pain fades. often, stab wounds lead to nerve damage. hands, arms, feet, neck, all have more motor nerve clusters than the torso. fingers may go numb or useless if a tendon is nicked.
also, bleeding takes FOREVER to stop, as mentioned above.
if the wound has an exit wound, like a bullet clean through or a spear through the whole limb, DONT REMOVE THE OBJECT. character will die. leave it, bandage around it. could be a good opportunity for some touchy touchy :)

Concussion:
despite the amnesia and confusion, people ain’t that articulate. even if they’re mumbling about how much they love (person) - if that’s ur trope - or a secret, it’s gonna make no sense. garbled nonsense, no full sentences, just a coupla words here and there.
if the concussion is mild, they’re gonna feel fine. until….bam! out like a light. kinda funny to witness, but also a good time for some caretaking fluff.
Fever:
you die at 110F. no 'oh no his fever is 120F!! ahhh!“ no his fever is 0F because he’s fucking dead. you lose consciousness around 103, sometimes less if it’s a child. brain damage occurs at over 104.

symptoms increase as fever rises. slow build that secret sickness! feverish people can be irritable, maybe a bit of sass followed by some hurt/comfort. never hurt anybody.
ALSO about fevers - they absolutely can cause hallucinations. Sometimes these alter memory and future memory processing. they're scary shit guys.

Side Note To Fan Fic Authors
Here’s the thing.
I read a lot of scripts. A lot. From professionals to aspiring writers to complete newbies. Features and pilots. Specs and treatments.
And 8 times out of 10 the fan fic that I’ve read over the last, oh, 15 years is leagues better than this stuff. It’s more inspired. It’s more compelling. It’s genre bending and creative and heartfelt. It’s well-paced and intense and funny and sexy and meaningful. It’s smart and thoughtful and good. It’s novel-quality. Better than, sometimes.
Rare is the script I don’t want to put down, but how often have we stayed up until 3am to get to the last chapter of a 100k fic? And it’s not even a fan fic author’s day job. This is what they do on the side. In their spare time. For free.
So my point is, fan fic authors, you’re good. You’re good writers and great storytellers. I know it doesn’t always feel like it, especially if you’re one of the authors who’s not a BNF and doesn’t get the notes/hits that a few do. And because some people still view fic as “not real writing.” You guys know the shit that gets made into movies. You’re better than that. So be better than that. If writing is what you think want to do, then just know you’re already doing it. You’ve already started.

i dont consider myself a 'fashion guru' by any means but one thing i will say is guys you dont need to know the specific brand an item you like is - you need to know what the item is called. very rarely does a brand matter, but knowing that pair of pants is called 'cargo' vs 'boot cut' or the names of dress styles is going to help you find clothes you like WAAAYYYY faster than brand shopping

Concussions, burns, and lacerations can all be deadly depending on severity and the care given after injury.
Concussions are head traumas that result in the brain "bouncing" off the inside of the skull. In mild cases, it might just make someone dazed and they'll need a break from thinking for a couple days. However, head trauma that results in unconsciousness or more severe symptoms (vomiting, profound confusion, amnesia, etc) generally means a serious concussion, which can cause brain bleeds and death if not properly cared for. Additionally, repeated minor concussions can also cause severe effects, as is often experienced by people who play full-contact sports (rugby, football, boxing, etc).
Burns and their effects differ depending on the degree of the burn. Generally, first degree is surface-level, resulting in maybe just a blister; second degree affects the surface and inner levels of skin (dermis); third degree is burning all the way to the subcutaneous fat; and finally fourth degree is burning to muscle or bone. Anything deeper than a first degree burn can become infected very easily, because they're massive openings in the skin where the body's defense system has been cooked to death. This includes burns meant to cauterize wounds - that used to be a common way of cauterization, until army surgeons realized that soldiers were more likely to die of infection if they'd been heat-cauterized compared to cauterizing with unheated ingredients.
Finally, lacerations and other similar cuts to the skin can be deadly for obvious reasons - infection. Especially in cases of deep lacerations, where there's a risk that the skin heals but the deeper wound doesn't, creating a pocket for anaerobic bacteria (such as tetanus or gangrene) to thrive. This kind of improper healing is far more likely if the wound is being treated without medical knowledge. Additionally, if you cut in the wrong place, it can also result in massive blood loss, even if it's not very deep. And these locations aren't intuitive either! I would recommend looking up a diagram of the circulatory system to see where major veins and arteries are located.
Overall, this list is...fine. But it's lacking in detail and nuance. Humans are both ridiculously stubborn and extremely fragile, and any one of these injuries could become lethal if in the right (wrong?) environment without proper (knowledgeable) medical care. It's surprising how thin the line between lethal and non-lethal can be. Authors, do research on the injuries you give your characters, there are lots of resources by medical professionals made for laypeople like us to understand possible risks and effects of these injuries.
Writing Angry Scenes: Tips to Avoid Melodrama and Make It Real
Anger can be one of the most intense, relatable emotions to read—and one of the trickiest to write. When handled well, an angry scene can pull readers deep into the emotional world of a character, building tension and driving the story forward. But when handled poorly, anger can easily slip into melodrama, making the character’s feelings seem overblown, forced, or even cringe-worthy.
So how can you avoid these pitfalls and write anger that feels real and compelling? Here are some tips to make angry scenes powerful without overdoing it.
1. Understand What Fuels Your Character’s Anger
To write anger authentically, you need to understand its roots. People get angry for complex reasons—fear, frustration, betrayal, grief, and even love. Ask yourself what’s truly driving your character’s anger. Are they afraid of losing control? Do they feel abandoned or misunderstood? Are they hurt by someone they trusted? Anger rarely exists in isolation, so dig into the deeper emotions fueling it.
When you understand the core reasons behind a character’s anger, you can weave those nuances into the scene, making the anger more relatable and layered. Readers will feel the depth of the character's rage, not just the surface heat of it.
2. Show, Don’t Tell—But Don’t Overdo It
“Show, don’t tell” is classic writing advice, but it’s especially crucial in angry scenes. Don’t rely on generic phrases like “She was furious” or “He clenched his fists in anger.” Instead, look for unique ways to convey how this specific character experiences anger. Maybe their voice drops to a deadly calm, or their eyes narrow in a way that makes everyone around them uncomfortable.
