Living among people he hates is an art. His survival, his ability to breath, depends on it. The way he tracks everyone who comes near. Keeping his ear open for opportunities to weaken them and drive them off. So much of strategy is set for that, making a decision and looking for chances to take advantage of.
It helps to remove what supports he can. He will not give them more than he must. He owes them none of what is his. Anything they wish to take will have to be ripped bloody from him.
It is exhausting to constantly track where people are in a room. To check locks and doors and silently tell himself that it's alright. That they won't reach him. It's a pathetic lie. If they become determined enough he is unprotected. His sleep lies shallow, disrupted too often by listening to sounds passing close to him. Are they coming for him this time? Or will the doors hold?
Shen Qingqiu is used to his words being passed over as exaggerated. They see him as too bitter and prone to lashing out. It leaves him exposed to his foes. He can rely on no one to help him. There is no one to speak to. Mentioning his own suffering only looks petty. Using mistakes they have made only makes him look cruel and unforgiving. So he finds his own way forward.
He plans. He waits. He survives. He will always survive. Shen Qingqiu sits in his house and stares blankly at a wall. Is he alone? Or are they coming for him?
A small green garden snake moved silently under the floorboards. Its tongue flicked and large golden eyes scanned the area. It knew someone was above, not quietly sleeping, but resting.
It had fled to the warmth of the bamboo house as the sun set, the once warm day turning chilly.
Shen Qingqiu got up and headed to make a small pot of tea. It's something to do. He can't rest. He stops to listen again for anything that shouldn't be there as the water boils.
The hissing of water had the little snake hissing in return, its body coiling at the sudden threat.
The sound drew Shen Qingqiu's attention. He immediately shifted his focus and crouched down. It didn't take long to locate the tiny garden snake. "What are you doing in here?" If it was meant to scare him, it was a rather pathetic attempt. This particular species wasn't venomous.
The snake was all puffed up, trying to look intimidating, even wiggling its little tail tip. It was like an over cooked noodle though, fragile and full of false bravo.
Shen Qingqiu snorted. He swiftly reached around and carefully snagged the snake while staying out of biting range. "You should not be here."
The little worm of a snake thrashed and squirmed, doing its best to break free. It was nothing compared to even a child, much less to a cultivator like Shen Qingqiu. It wrapped its little body around his hand, trying to yank it's head free.
His lips tugged into a smile. It was just as terrified and desperate as him. For a moment he considered crushing it. Then he walked to his door, opened it, and lowered the snake to the ground letting go.
The little snake immediately curled itself into a ball, covering its head and peaking at Shen Qingqiu through its coils. Its little tounge flicked out, searching for hostility.
"You're fine," he told it. "I'm not touching you."
The snake wiggled and in a quick-ish move darted off back under the house to hide.
Shen Qingqiu's lips quirked up with amusement. He got up and checked carefully that no one was around. Then he carefully closed and locked the door, activating the security. Mostly safe.
The little snake found its way under the house until it rested in a spot under the stove, curling up in the warmth to rest.

Still alive
ugh this picture of a snake peeking around a doorway is my fave this snake just looks so niceÂ
Snakes just look so polite all the time
Like I know they could bite me but look at that little gentleman
The security on Bai Zhan was too lax. A little garden snake easily made it's way up the cliffs and rocks, vividly green against the pale stone. With only a couple of diciples there was no one to see it slither right up to the peak lord's house. There was a barrier on the home, but the snake nosed open a window, the mark on it's forhead flashing red before it slipped right in.
@ask-liu-qingge
Liu QingGe was outside his house, tending to a very small garden because his sister had bothered him endlessly about needing to have more than just the most stubborn grass ever on his peak.
There was a small rosebush, a few flowering vines, a few patches of hardy flowers, a shrub, and a tree that was determined to have its trunk grow in curves and spirals despite Liu QingGe's best efforts.
To keep his unruly disciples from somehow messing up the plants he was growing on the peak at his sister's insistence, they were being grown just off the side of his personal house. He was currently watering the vines while also removing them whenever they started trying to get a little touchy or handsy.
At least the rosebush and shrub weren't likely to try and alter his mental state like the flowers or tree might, or the vines that refused to stay put where they'd decided to grow wrapped around the tree.
Liu QingGe let out a soft hum as he finished watering his garden, stepping back and swatting at another vine that tried to wrap around his wrist or arm.
"No, that's not allowed and you know that," he scolded the plant before walking away to go back inside his house for breakfast or lunch, whichever was closer timewise
The heavenly demon was sitting at the kitchen table, drapped in only a simple white inner robe. "Peak Lord Liu is raising some intresting plants these days." He had helped himself to the kitchen as well, tea was sitting before him still steaming.
"Entirely my sister's fault, ZhuZhi-Lang. She insisted I need to have more plants than just the grass that has managed to survive my disciples being their usual selves. Is there any reason you came to my house in particular?" The war god hummed as he entered the kitchen to make some food.
He absentmindedly rubbed away a bit of sap on his arm as he looked over what ingredients he had on hand to cook with, the clear-ish substance a bit thicker than a normal plant's and visibly shining in the light coming in through the window.
"I understand. The choice in plants is what I find most interesting." His slitted eyes lingered on the shimmering drop of sap before trailing up to Liu Qingge’s face once more. "Is the beauty of Bai Zhan so lonely he would raise such a needy vine?"
Liu QingGe flushed at that, pointedly turning to face away from the snake demon to try and hide his reddened cheeks. He busied himself with pulling out ingredients for what he had decided to make, deciding it was best to just not respond to such an accusation.
"Is ZhuZhi-Lang using the correct teaset with whichever tea he decided to make for himself?"
Was it a deliberate change in topic? Yes, yes it was. Hopefully ignoring the question he'd been asked would make ZhuZhi-Lang leave such topics alone, though Liu QingGe doubted that would be the case.
Zhuzhi-lang stared at Liu Qingge’s back side appreciatively. "Hm, sure. Of course I am. Liu Qingge IS aware of what kind of vines and flowers those are? Has it really been so long he's forgotten how to call upon this humble snake, or am I not satisfactory?"
Liu QingGe flushed further at what the heavenly demon's accusation, grabbing a potato and starting to cut it into mostly even slices to try and occupy himself.
"They're the plants that require the least maintenance. I didn't ask questions when buying beyond how much water they needed and what sort of soil they could grow in. What exactly is ZhuZhi-Lang accusing this master of, that he is asking such questions?" Liu QingGe gave in to continuing the topic, grabbing an eggplant next to start slicing for his meal once he finished slicing up the potatoes he was going to be using.
Zhuzhi-lang moved right behind Liu Qingge, hands on either side of the counter. His lips just inches from the peak lord's ear he whispered, "I am suggesting Qingge may need some...instruction on how to properly care for such flora."
Liu QingGe froze where he was still cutting vegetables, his face radiating heat from how flushed his cheeks were getting at what was being insinuated.
"ZhuZhi! You– you can't just say things like that, especially not when I'm trying to prepare food," Liu QingGe sputtered out, shifting where he'd been caged against the counter by the demon's arms.
"Why not, it doesn't seem like anyone else is taking the time to teach you. Is Qingge implying I mean something beyond that?" He blew gently on the shell of Qingge's ear.
Liu QingGe shivered a little at feeling, tightening his grip on the knife in his hand a little.
"ZhuZhi, I'm trying to make food. You won't cause me to make a mistake and have to start over, will you?" The war god spoke as evenly as he could, though he made no move to try and get the heavenly demon to back away or end this little game that had started.
"I'm not even touching you." He teased further, his heat along Liu Qingge's back. His forked tongue flicked out, just barely missing brushing against Liu Qingge's skin.
The Bai Zhan peak lord fought against the temptation to just set the knife down from where he was using it to cut his vegetables for the meal he was working on making. That wasn't how the game went, giving in this soon and just letting ZhuZhi-Lang win without making the snake demon work for it wouldn't be any fun.
"ZhuZhi, you aren't trying to distract me so you can steal a bite or two of the ingredients I'm cutting, are you?" Liu QingGe teased back, shifting some to try and get closer to the heat the heavenly demon gave off without ZhuZhi-Lang realising.
"Who? Me? I would never take without permission. Though, I am starving." He moved back, just a bit, enough so Liu Qingge would have to lean further to feel him again.
"ZhuZhi!" Liu QingGe let out a soft laugh at the words, unable to hold back the smile that grew on his face.
He was lucky his head was still facing away from the demon, or else ZhuZhi-Lang would get closer to winning their little game than he already was. The peak lord turned back to the vegetables he was cutting, grabbing a carrot next to slice into pieces.
"You're going to have to be patient, I still need to cut the rest of the ingredients before I can start cooking."
"What is Qingge making?" Since Liu Qingge was so focused on it, might as well ask. He caught a strand of the war god's hair and playing with it.
"This QingGe is making either a stiry-fry or a stew. I haven't decided yet, so I'm currently only chopping the vegetables I'd use for both until I do decide which one I want," Liu QingGe couldn't hold back the amused huff that left him when ZhuZhi-Lang began playing with some of his hair that had escaped the braided style he kept it in.
Though he was a little disappointed with how the snake had seemingly given up on their game. It was always fun to tease each other until one relented and allowed the other to 'win' by having his way with the 'loser' of their little game. ZhuZhi-Lang won a majority of the time, though Liu QingGe had managed to win a few times himself.
With a hum Zhuzhi-lang kissed the strand of hair before tucking it back behind Liu Qingge’s ear. "Stew is nice, we can chat while it cooks. Stir fry is nice, its easier to eat." Either one was going to need meat and rice. We moved with familiarity through the kitchen to the rice bag, getting enough for a single serving. Then the bowl and water. He went from looming behind Qingge to standing next to him, helping in what ways he could.
Personally Zhuzhi-lang wasn't actually hungry, he had already eaten that month. Before he hadn't been much of a cook, but now he could at least wash and boil rice.
Liu QingGe couldn't help the fond smile as he continued cutting vegetables for his meal. It was considered rude to not make enough for two people, but with the differences between their constitutions and how often they needed to eat it would have been more rude if he'd insisted on making enough for ZhuZhi-Lang to eat too. Knowing his partner, the heavenly demon had already eaten before arriving, so he wouldn't be eating again until a number of days had passed.
"Hmm, stew it is then. You've convinced me of which one to make, ZhuZhi,"
The demon general hummed pleased. With his help and a decided goal prep went fast and soon a pot of slowly cooking over a fine. "Where are all your diciples?" Zhuzhi-lang asked as the lid was set.
"Training at one of the far courtyards. They like the one between a set of cold and hot springs currently, so they can wash after in whichever temperature they prefer to keep clean. They're learning what I'm trying to teach much faster than the ones I handed off to other peak lords, and they've set up routines to keep themselves learning and training. I've had to make it a rule that they include rest breaks, though. They'll end up burning themselves out if I didn't and then they wouldn't be able to help anyone once I start letting them go on missions outside the sect," Liu QingGe answered with a smile, practically glowing with how pleased he was.
He was full of pride over his disciples finally being comprised entirely of those who understood he was trying to teach them teamwork and efficiency so they were prepared for missions outside the sect. He was trying to ensure they survived, after all, and it was better they learn about potential consequences within the sect rather than out in the field where a mistake could cost them a limb or a life.
Zhuzhi-lang nodded, he understood the importance of temperature regulation. "Then they are just like their master."
"Hopefully not just like me, I can't have all my disciples up and falling in love with heavenly demon snakes. I've claimed for myself the only one there is and I don't like sharing what's mine," Liu QingGe said with a teasing smile on his face.
He'd gotten a bit more relaxed since getting with ZhuZhi-Lang, having a partner he could have proper spars with and could trust to be able to match him in at least most things doing wonders for his constant restlessness and general attitude.
With a huff Zhuzhi-lang looked out the window to the garden. "Your plants are dangerous to your disciples." He started, "They devour yang energy and cause confusion. They will soon also be dangerous to you."
"... What? ZhuZhi, what do you mean by that? I bought them from a passing merchant when I was looking for ones that required little maintenance. Are you saying that I was tricked and ended up buying plants that are harmful to people?" Liu QingGe frowned worriedly, quickly moving to the pot of stew to give it a little stir to keep it from getting burnt into the pot.
"Correct. Those plants are demonic in nature." He stood with his hands neatly behind his back.
"Ah..." Liu QingGe frowned, either at the new information or at having been tricked into buying demonic plants, it was hard to tell.
He added a bit of seasoning to the stew after having a small spoonful of it to taste, humming low in thought as he tried to come up with what to do.
"What sort of confusion do the plants cause?"
"They make the inflicted more suggestable to others. Its akin to being drunk." He explained in the simplest terms.
"Ah..." Liu QingGe felt his cheeks heat a little as they turned red, very decisively not looking away from the pot of stew he was keeping an eye on so that the snake general wouldn't see his face.
"Suggestible? In what way do they make one suggestible, ZhuZhi?" He questioned lightly, trying his best to hide the flicker of interest he admittedly had in how that would be used.
"In a way that would make them do things that they wouldn't normally do. As if drunk." He repeated, lost in his own thoughts. What kind of merchant traveled around with these kinds of plants?
"But still thungs they would like to do yes?" Liu QingGe wanted to make sure, wondering if his thoughts of asking the snake demon to cuddle might have been influenced by the flowers.
... Though that might also be caused by how being held seemed like it would be comforting and relaxing with the right amount of pressure involved. Plus ZhuZhi-Lang's scales were nice to touch and run his fingers over, even with how rare the opportunity presented itself.
"That would depend in the will power if the affected person and their trust with those around them." Zhuzhi-lang sighed, knowing what Liu Qingge was getting.
"Liu Qingge should be extra cautious around these kinds of plants."
"... So that's a no to cuddling?" Liu QingGe asked after a moment, almost on the verge of pouting (what qualified as pouting from him anyway)
With a smirk Zhuzhi-lang put a hand on Liu Qingge’s head, using his dulled claws to gently scratch as if Liu Qingge was a cute pet. "We can cuddle."
Liu QingGe smiled softly at that, and leaned into the grntle contact with a hum.
"Will you be in your human form for it or are you going to exchange your legs for a tail?" He asked as he got some of the now fully-cooked stew into a bowl for him to start eating.
He didn't offer any to ZhuZhi-Lang, knowing that the snake demon didn't eat anywhere near as much as humans did so he likely wouldn't be hungry.
"Qingge likes my scales." He smirked and make his way from the kitchen to the day bed. His legs blended into a long serpent tail and his robe dropped to the floor.
"This QingGe does indeed like ZhuZhi's scales, they're one of my favourite parts of you. Especially with how smooth and well taken care of they are, they're something ZhuZhi has every right to be immensely proud of," Liu QingGe agreed easily, happily drinking in the sight of his partner's gleaming scales.
The war god grabbed utensils to eat his stew with, before he began moving to follow ZhuZhi-Lang to the part of his house that he kept the daybed in. It would be nice to cuddle with his partner while he ate, even with the risk of potentially making a bit of a mess and having to clean it up later.
The giant serpent waited for Liu Qingge to get on the bed before coiling around him. He left only Liu Qingge’s chest and head exposed.
Liu QingGe relaxed into the hold, letting out an appreciative hum as he began to eat the stew. This was perhaps the most comfortable he could get, other than if ZhuZhi-Lang decided to wrap around his chest as well.
"Your scales are gleaming particularly well today. Did you polish them just before coming here, ZhuZhi?" He asked idly while curling into the snake demon's touch as much as he could.
"Shed was last week. I couldn't come sooner." His chest pressed to Liu Qingge's back, arms wrapping around the cultivator.
Liu QingGe hummed understandingly, and took another bite of his stew. Honestly, he could easily fall asleep with ZhuZhi-Lang wrapped around him like this, it's not like it would be the first time cuddling turned into taking a nap together. His partner wouldn't do anything if he were to fall asleep.
"That's alright, you know I always want you to put your health first before our relationship,"
Zhuzhi-lang hummed, the giving Liu Qingge a little squeeze. He wished he could keep Liu Qingge tucked away where his silly and careless ways would only land him in Zhuzhi-lang's grasp. He kissed Liu Qingge’s shoulder, "Finish your food so we can sleep for a while."
The peak lord let out an amused huff, before dutifully turning to his bowl of stew and going back to eating it instead of talking to his partner more. He relaxed into the hold of the snake coils around him a little further at the squeeze, finding it easy to loosen up when someone he trusted this much was near him.
As soon as the bowl was empty Zhuzhi-lang took it and set it aside. He demanded cuddles, hugging Liu Qingge and nibbling along his neck and jaw.
Liu QingGe smiled amusedly as he gave in and wrapped his arms around ZhuZhi-Lang in return, holding onto the snake demon and allowing him his little kisses and tiny bites.
"Have I been neglecting my ZhuZhi, that he must assert his position as my partner so?" he teased lightly, doing nothing to stop the affection between them from happening.
"Yes" The heavenly demon, general of the southern demon jungle, and the great serpant from hell, said with his face pressed into Liu Qingge’s chest.
Liu QingGe gave a soft hum in answer, moving one hand to begin running his fingers through ZhuZhi-Lang's hair gently.
"This QingGe will just have to make it up to gege then, so that my ZhuZhi doesn't doubt his place in my life ever again,"
The war god placed a light and chaste kiss on ZhuZhi-Lang's forehead, lips pressing for a second against the snake demon's zuiyin. A simple show of affection that would have had Liu QingGe turning bright red if he'd done it in public but only tinted his ears and cheeks slightly pink here in the privacy of his house. He continued lightly running his fingers through ZhuZhi-Lang's hair, undoing the braids that kept it contained as gently as he always did.
The giant snake hummed, eyes closing as he settled in for a nap. He wanted to hold Liu Qingge tightly forever, to always have him tightly in his coils.
Liu QingGe smiled fondly at his partner, continuing to run his fingers through the snake general's hair as they laid on his daybed together. A nap together wouldn't hurt, with how he'd had to pull an all-nighter working through his peak's reports and mission logs to make sure none of them were missing or had been completed wrong. It couldn't be too long, though, he still needed to make sure that the disciples were up to his standards and that if they weren't that they were getting there. Especially considering this batch was actually learning what he was trying to teach them.
Zhuzhi-lang hummed, turning his face into press his mouth against Liu Qingge’s neck. He nibbled and sucked there on the soft skin, only for a moment before biting, hard. His needle-like fangs sunk in, clear venom dripping into Liu Qingge’s blood. It wasn't deadly, just something that would force Liu Qingge to sleep for at least a day.
Liu QingGe relaxed completely where he was wrapped within ZhuZhi-Lang's coils, going completely slack as it began to enter his system. The tension he'd had from all his duties and the stress of the paperwork that still needed to be done left, leaving him practically boneless as his eyes fell shut. His breathing slowed down and his heartbeat went from its slightly uneven rate to a more sluggish rate that was quite a bit more even. The war god's entire body weight fell completely upon ZhuZhi-Lang without the man being conscious enough to hold some of himself up so he didn't accidentally crush his partner.
Now that the tension and usual agitation of Liu QingGe had been rendered void by ZhuZhi-Lang's venom, it became clear that the man had been skipping sleep intermittently again if the hard to see eyebags were anything to go by. Unlike normal people who experienced eyebags, with Liu QingGe the skin under his eyes got a bit lighter instead of darker from the sleep he missed. Going by how light his under-eyes had become, he'd missed perhaps two to three nights of proper resting instead of the one that was guessed at first glance.
With a content sigh, Zhuzhi-lang sat up and stared at Liu Qingge’s pretty face. His fingertips carefully traced every detail, commiting it all to memory. "Together forever." He kissed Liu Qingge’s lips one last time before leaning back. His arms dissolved, his whole torso smoothed and bulked until the giant snake head was left. His tongue flicked out as he adjusted but he knew there was no point in waiting.
Starting at Liu Qingge’s feet Zhuzhi-lang opened his mouth wide. A human was small compared to Zhuzhi-lang's giant snake form. Liu Qingge easily slid inside. The snake hummed happily, feeling his beloved settle inside of him. No longer would they ever be apart. They would get to be one.
Liu QingGe remained slack and relaxed, ZhuZhi-Lang's venom serving to ensure he was incapable of giving any form of resistance to what was happening. The peak lord didn't offer even the slightest hint of his cultivation leading to the venom wearing off any faster than ZhuZhi-Lang had estimated it would last for.
The Giant Snake general hummedin satisfaction. Liu Qingge was a welcome warm weight inside his chest. Zhuzhi-lang felt his was the correct place for him, inches from his heart. His tounge flicked as he curled tightly, his scales harder than diamond protecting them both while they slept. It would take time but snakes were patiant creatures.
He absorbed every peice of Liu Qingge, until there was nothing left. When he was awoke, he was alone, but not truely. Liu Qingge's energy still coursed through him, giving him strength and warmth. Shifting to be small he slipped off of Bai Zhan and away from the Cang Qiong Mountain.
@ask-liu-qingge

He was trying to ensure they survived, after all, and it was better they learn about potential consequences within the sect rather than out in the field where a mistake could cost them a limb or a life.
